How do you throw a mermaid themed party?

There are so many ways to add a little mermaid magic to your party! Start by adding some fun and festive decorations. Mermaid themed banners, balloons, and streamers are a great way to set the tone for your party.

This mermaid cupcakes recipe is an easy cupcake with fun chocolate mermaid tails using a mermaid tail silicone mold to give it a special mermaid touch.

Then, fill up your buffet table with all sorts of seafood favorites like shrimp cocktail, crab salad, and sushi. And of course, don’t forget the cake! These easy mermaid cupcakes are perfect for any underwater celebration.

Why This Recipe Works

These cupcakes aren’t just visually striking; they’re also incredibly delicious. The base is a moist and fluffy vanilla cupcake, and the frosting is a dreamy buttercream dyed with shades of the sea. The use of fondant for the mermaid tail and pearl sprinkles makes these cupcakes extra special.

  1. Easily Customizable: You can choose your own colors and decorations to personalize your undersea landscape.
  2. Kid-Friendly: Children love to assist in both baking and decorating, turning a simple baking day into a family event.
  3. Perfect for Parties: Whether it’s a birthday party, baby shower, or beach-themed gathering, these cupcakes make a charming centerpiece.

What are considered mermaid colors?

Mermaids are often associated with the colors blue and green. But you can really use any colors you want when decorating for a mermaid party. Try to stay within a cohesive color scheme so that your decorations look intentional and put together.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Frosting: When it comes to frosting, make sure to get the right consistency. It should be firm enough to hold its shape when piped but not too stiff that it’s difficult to squeeze out of the bag.
  2. Coloring: To achieve the perfect under-the-sea colors, start with a small amount of food coloring and gradually add more until you get the desired shade.
  3. Fondant Mermaid Tails: To create the mermaid tails, roll out some colored fondant and cut out the shape with a knife or a mermaid tail cookie cutter. Allow them to dry and harden before placing them on the cupcakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a boxed cake mix for the cupcakes?

Absolutely! If you’re short on time, a boxed cake mix is a great alternative. Just follow the instructions on the box.

How can I make the mermaid tails if I don’t have a cookie cutter?

No worries! You can cut out a mermaid tail template from a piece of cardboard and use that as a guide to cut your fondant.

Can I use regular buttercream frosting?

Yes, regular buttercream frosting will work perfectly fine for this recipe. Just make sure to add your food coloring to achieve those beautiful sea hues.

What kind of cupcakes are best for a mermaid party?

Any cupcakes can be transformed into mermaid cupcakes with the right decorations. But if you want to really embrace the mermaid theme, try making these easy mermaid cupcakes.

Storing and Freezing Mermaid Cupcakes

Storage: These cupcakes should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for 2-3 days.

  • Mermaid Tail Silicone Mold
  • White baking chocolate or Wilton candy melts
  • Mermaid sprinkles
  • 3 small piping bags
  • 1 large piping bag, 1 large star frosting tip

    Directions for Cupcakes:

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray or line a standard muffin tin.
    2. Step 1: Add cake mix to a large mixing bowl. Using a hand or stand mixer, mix in your water, oil, and egg whites on medium until well incorporated.
    3. Step 2: Add batter into the muffin tin until each is about 2/3 full. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before adding candy filling and frosting.

    Directions for Frosting:

    1. Steps 3-4:  In a large mixing bowl, using a hand or stand mixer, cream the butter for 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. Mix in the vanilla extract and salt.
    2. Steps 5-6: Slowly mix in the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, while alternating 1 tablespoon of the half and half.  Continue to mix until creamy and stiff peaks form. Mix in the luster dust. The amount depends on how shimmery you want your frosting to be!
    3. Step 7: Divide the frosting into 3 containers. Add one food coloring to each container, 1 drop at a time and mix until desired color is achieved.
    4. Steps 8-9: Add each color to its own small piping bag until you have 3 bags of frosting. Next you will insert your 3 smaller piping bags into the large, prepared piping bag.
    5. Steps 10-11: Before frosting your cupcakes, squeeze out a bit onto a plate until you see all the colors come out. Frost your cupcakes and sprinkle with the mermaid sprinkles.
    6. Steps 12-13: Melt your chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Add 1-2 drops of food coloring and add to your mermaid tail mold. Place in the fridge until hardened. Gently pop the chocolate tails from the mold and insert into the top of the cupcakes. Enjoy!
