When it comes to sides, I am usually a rice and peas kind of girl, but lately I’ve been trying new things! I was raised on a lot of rice in my Caribbean household and we didn’t venture into much else. Occasionally we would do a pasta salad or macaroni and cheese.

It wasn’t until I started experimenting with cooking for my husband and family that I learned the amazingness of making mashed potatoes from scratch. I had always made them from the box and I can’t believe what a disservice I was doing for myself.

Once I made them on my own I realized that potatoes are such a fun blank canvas for so many different ingredients!

FAQs, Tips and Tricks

1. Which potatoes should I use?
Yukon gold potatoes work best due to their creamy texture and buttery flavor, but you can also use russet potatoes.

2. How to prevent lumpy mashed potatoes?
Ensure the potatoes are cut uniformly and are fully cooked before mashing. Also, gradually add the warmed cream to maintain a smooth consistency.

3. Why use a slow cooker?
The slow cooker allows the potatoes to slowly absorb the flavors of the broth and garlic, yielding a more flavorful result.

Variations

Try adding cooked and crumbled bacon for a smoky flavor, or stir in some caramelized onions for sweetness. You can also use different cheeses like gouda or gruyère for a unique twist.

I am so excited to share these super fun crockpot mashed potatoes with cheddar and garlic with you today. We all know that mashed potatoes take a lot of hard work because you have to put a lot of elbow grease in the mashing.

Where to Serve

This side dish is perfect for a holiday meal like Thanksgiving or Christmas, but it’s so effortless that you can serve it with weeknight dinners too. It pairs well with roasts, steaks, and grilled chicken.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To reheat, place in a saucepan, add a splash of cream or milk, and heat on low, stirring occasionally.

Common Problems and How to Avoid Them

If your mashed potatoes turn gluey or gummy, it’s likely due to overmixing. To avoid this, gently fold in the cream and cheese, and avoid using a blender or food processor, which can overwork the potatoes.

Take the work out of mashed potatoes

The beauty about this recipe is that you can use the crockpot and let the slow cooker do all the work of making the potatoes soft. You mash all the ingredients together and voila! you now have an amazing cheesy mashed potatoes side dish.

Tips for Making this Recipe with Kids

This recipe is great for kids to help with peeling and cutting the potatoes (under supervision), adding the ingredients to the slow cooker, and mashing the potatoes at the end. It’s a fun, hands-on experience for them.

Topping Options

For extra flavor and texture, top your mashed potatoes with chopped fresh herbs like chives or parsley, a dollop of sour cream, extra shredded cheese, or crispy fried onions.

This crockpot mashed potatoes with cheddar recipe takes requires no boiling. It's perfectly delicious for thanksgiving or your next dinner party!

Adding the cream in while mashing makes sure that you have the most perfect smooth consistency. These are great to make in the background of a big meal…like thanksgiving…or a fun dinner party. While these are in the slow cooker for 4 hours, you can do so many other things–or you can nap. It’s really up to you. 🙂

What are the best potatoes for mashed potatoes?

Try to get some of the high starch potatoes like Russet (aka Idaho potatoes) or Yukon, those definitely make the best and fluffiest mashed potatoes, anything outside of that may lead to pasty potatoes and no one has any time for that!

What goes good with mashed potatoes?

I personally would serve this alongside two of my most popular crockpot recipes Balsamic Pork Tenderloin or even my Crockpot Pepper Steak.

Why this Recipe Works

This recipe is a game-changer because it simplifies the process of making mashed potatoes without compromising on flavor or texture. The slow cooking makes the potatoes incredibly tender, and the addition of chicken broth enhances their taste.

The warmed cream and cheddar add richness and a velvety finish that will have everyone reaching for seconds. Not to mention, the slow cooker frees up your stovetop space – a real bonus on busy cooking days!

My husband grew up in an Irish Catholic house where meat and potatoes ruled. My MIL only made mashed potatoes by scratch. But in all honesty, I never had time to make them that way. But love the crockpot and Instant Pot for foods like these. So, most definitely giving this one a try now for my family and cannot thank you enough :)
