Last week I had the opportunity to cover a very special Disney event held for NYC high schoolers. The Disney Dreamers Academy held a star studded event to encourage high schoolers to apply for the opportunity to join the 2019 class and learn how to DREAM BIG!
It was a high energy night where motivational speakers and alumni from the Disney Dreamers Academy program, and Disney executives took to the stage to deliver powerful inspirational stories to a room full of NYC area high school students and parents on how to pursue your dreams. The crowd was also introduced to the Disney Dreamers Academy program which is a 4-day all-expenses-paid immersive and transformative experience for high school students held annually in March at Walt Disney World Resort.
If you have never heard of the Disney Dreamers Academy—check out what it’s all about!
What is Disney Dreamers Academy?
Disney Dreamers Academy is a 4-day, power-packed event in which 100 select high school students, ages 13-19, are inspired, motivated and prepared to dream big. Disney Dreamers experience:
- Inspirational guest speakers with immersive presentations
- Career activities ranging from animation, journalism and entrepreneurship, to culinary arts and zoology
- Networking and interviewing opportunities
Dreamers are creative, eager to learn and dedicated to pursuing their dreams with passion. If you have what it takes and you are between the ages of 13-19, you live in the United States of America and you are enrolled in high school grades 9-12 when entering, apply here!
The event was held at the legendary Schomberg Library in the heart of Harlem. Not many things get me up to the top of Manhattan — especially 8 months pregnant — but this was a super special occasion. I remember how inspired I was by this program a few years ago, and even again last year, so I didn’t hesitate to attend. Plus, my favorite dude Mickey Mouse came all the way to New York to see me!

Spent the evening getting inspired by the amazing folks behind the @disneydreamersacademy at the @schomburgcenter in #Harlem! What an amazing program that allows high schoolers to go to @waltdisneyworld for four days *all expenses paid* with a chaperone to teach them how to Dream BIG! If you have a high schooler or know a high schooler make sure they apply at DisneyDreamersAcademy.com! #disneydreamersacademy #dda #dreambig #be100 who are you telling to apply?? You gotta be in it to win it!!
Before the actual program started we were able to get a small media preview of what was to come with the general program. We got to hear from the speakers which included Disney Dreamers Alumni, Steve Harvey’s daughter Brandi Harvey, super motivational speaker Jonathan Sprinkles, Essense Style and Beauty Director Julee Wilson and Disney Executive Champion, Tracey Powell.

Finally it was showtime! High schoolers were in the house and New York local DJ Enuff (legendary) was on the ones and twos playing everything from Luther Vandross to Cardi B. It warmed my old millennial heart.
Jonathan Sprinkles is an incredible motivational speaker! Listen to his session here and I know you will agree!
We got to hear from many speakers and I know that I was there to cover the event but I walked out with much more than I ever expected to. The message included many points including how to keep pressing forward even when things aren’t perfect—even if YOU aren’t perfect. We simply just need to keep SHOWING UP every single day. So many gems, including that we are out here afraid to step into our amazing because we are so busy watching everyone else achieve their own goals on Instagram. I mean, just read me for filth why don’t you??

The night ended with the amazing Julee Wilson, (who had on the most perfect lace pencil skirt I’ve ever seen) the Fashion and Beauty Director at Essence that spoke to us about stepping into our dopeness. She shared her story about how she got the opportunity of a lifetime only to have her editor say no. She stuck to her guns and you know what? Her editor changed their mind and that piece ended up being a catalyst to landing her dream job at Essence. To say that I was inspired is an understatement!!
So if you have a high schooler or know one (family, friend, neighbor—whatever) encourage them to apply. The application pool is deep but you gotta at least try. I so wish I was in high school again because this is such a cool opportunity!!
