My First CrossFit Class — How I Felt & What I Wore

A couple of days ago week I had the pleasure of attending an event when fitness and fashion collided head on. When fashion and fitness overlap in the venn diagram of my life, I am a very happy girl. The event was held at Crossfit NYC: The Black Box where I would take my very first crossfit class…I was more than a little scurred.

SKINS is a company that has been producing compression gear for over 18 years. They were kind enough to outfit me in a pair of their top of the line compression tights and also give me and some other wonderful folks a true taste of crossfit.

When I walked in there was a line of mannequins with the most beautiful fitness fashions. I’m not going to lie. I want it all. SKINS has figured out a way to bypass just being a line of all black compression gear and turn the clothing that has function and fabulousness all wrapped up in one.

Compression gear is really great for all athletes and even the non athlete. It’s especially great for runners because the compression of the pants reduces the amount of tears in the muscles there fore reducing soreness the next day. On the other end of the spectrum its great for new moms that want to keep everything in too!

These were my first pair of compression pants. When I tried them on I really could not believe how much like my skin they felt. I started mini jogging around the house and I couldn’t believe I didn’t have these all my life. Please don’t judge me if you see me in these pants for my remaining races this year. No really. Every single race. They feel SO much better than anything I currently own!

The technology that is built in the SKINS line is astonishing. Somehow they have figured out a way to make the compression gear work for you year round. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. That alone is worth the investment especially for you outdoor athletes!  The brand SKINS is actually very popular in Australia and now they have expanded to the US. They outfit a LOT of professional sports teams and they have been “flying under the radar” but now they are ready to be the premier compression line, not just for professional athletes but for those of us who just love working out too. Check out all the pretty colors for the Spring 2015 line!

I am not going to lie I was a lil scared about taking a real crossfit class especially after I had run an “easy” 3 miles early that morning. When the instructors explained what would be happening I felt more at ease. It was going to be tough but I could manage.

We started by doing a quick warm-up which included jumping Jacks, high knees and etc. Then it was time for the “WOD” = Workout of the Day.

It was not easy. First round I was okay, but by the third round? I might have been begging for mercy. Although it was only 15 minutes it was definitely one of the most intense fitness classes I’ve ever been to. The crazy part is… I liked it. Like really liked it.

Then it was time to have some fun. We would be doing “AMRAP” which stands for As Many Reps As Possible. I loved this way of working out because it really because an individual sport instead of doing the same amount of reps as everyone else. The instructor also told us to add up all the reps per round and try to beat them each time, so happy to say I did just that!

Afterwards, we were treated to healthy smoothies from Liqueteria.

I am actually really surprised by how much I liked crossfit, dare I say I felt at home?! This is very interesting because did I mention that I did a lot of burpees?! Something about Crossfit NYC: The Black Box made me feel at home. If I could find a way to make it happen financially I am in there like swimwear! (with compression tights on, of course :))

Thank you so much to SKINS for providing me (and introducing me) to the best compression pants ever. The quality and technology is really top notch, and I totally see why compression works! You can check out their full line here.

Have you ever tried crossfit? Do you own compression gear? It’s Friday! How did you do with your eating and exercise this week?

That’s awesome! Crossfit is on my fitness bucket list. You did great! I love those Skins capri’s. I with you on the fashion and fitness collision! Skins managed to do just that!

I am not a fan of CrossFit but I’m a huge fan of compression! Those pants look awesome. And, if they keep you cool AND warm? Totally worth the investment. Thanks for the intro to more awesomeness!!!

Aww, you look gorgeous in that above pic and will say I have never fully tried compression wear myself, but now you got me curious! 😉

I am curious to find out more about CrossFit there is a company here that advertises that a lot. Loving those pants though.

I don’t belong to a CF box, but a lot of my workouts look very similar to that style of working out. Our new baby’s 5 weeks old, so I started working out again this week. Feels so good to be back at it!

Good for you. I’m such a whimp. No way I’m taking a cross fit class. I’ll just stick to pole dancing!

Sherelle October 3, 2014 - 2:30 pm

I like the idea behind the compression pants! I recently began training with my hubby, and the next day muscle soreness is no joke! If I had that cute tank and capri set, I’d be good to go!

Super fun!!! The only time I tried CrossFit was at FitBloggin last year but that was a pretty quick workout. I have been to studios in NYC that have a similar format to CrossFit like the Fhitting Room and As 1. I like this type of exercise but I don’t love feeling like I’m going to die! I end up pushing myself to the point where I feel like I’m going to be sick and that’s no good!

The compression clothing looks awesome! I’m obsessed with the graffiti pants!

I love their stuff!!!! They are the best! Haha! 🙂

Tamara October 3, 2014 - 8:40 pm

I don’t do crossfit or wear compression but I should ask my sister! She’s a yogi/crossfitter and she can do such amazing things.
She would have loved this!

LaShawn October 6, 2014 - 7:56 pm

I am not here for Crossfit!

But anyway, THE PANTS!!! I want them! Like now.

Leslie October 7, 2014 - 9:27 pm

The Husband swears by his running tights in the winter – he even wore them in the snow last year! I always look at the bright colored/patterned pants and wish I could wear them but I just never feel like me when I try them on. At least I can look, right? Crossfit is all the rage right now, but it really is expensive!

Patty October 8, 2014 - 12:05 pm

I have to look into these compression pants! Thanks for the tip!

Congrats on the Crossfit workout…intense! 🙂

Carly October 9, 2014 - 5:47 pm

I am definitely going to check out Skins! I do have some compression wear (that I am definitely not wearing for the next 6 months or so!) but I love that they have cute patterns and colors. You are so right that it’s almost always boring black. Also – kudos on beating your rep score for each round, Nellie, that is super impressive!!

Carla October 19, 2014 - 2:21 pm

I’ll check out the line. I do wear compression capri’s. My Old Navy are almost too loose. I like my Reebok the best. I would love to be bold enough to try that first printed pair you showed. So cute!

Glad you enjoyed your Crossfit Class!

You sold me, I think I need SKINS compression pants! I’ve used calf compression sleeves to help out an old calf injury, but have never worn compression leggings before. They sound awesome!
