What’s In A Name?

Do I look like a Schnelle?

One day when I was a young girl I asked my mom why on earth did she name me Schnelle? I mean all of my friends names were amazing. I was friends with a lot of Taras, Kims, Brittanys and a whole lot of Lisas. (Yes to the 80s babies!!)

So I couldn’t understand why my mom would give me such a unique and super complicated spelled name. Back then the name was so rare and if you did see any it was definitely Chanel. Like the perfume! (I totally joke with my clients when I introduce myself, “Chanel #1″!)

She told me that she initially wanted to name me Jessica. How beautiful is Jessica?! I immediately wished she had called me that. Think of all the awesome nicknames I would have had!!

It would have been so easy to remember! And guess what when we went to theme parks there would be name tags especially made for me!! How awesome is that?!

When I asked her why. Why would you not name me this beautiful name?

She said on the way to the hospital she saw the German word “schnell” which means fast. She liked the way it sounded and how it was spelled so the rest was history.

I eventually grew to LOVE the name and how unique it is. I especially love my nickname that my family gave me in “nellie” it totally fits my personality! There are tons of Shanels out there too now so the name has gained lots if popularity.

I’m curious! do you love your name? Would you change it if you could? What would you change it to??

  1. I like my name just find. My mom wanted to name me Kelly, then I would have had the same initial as my hubby and kids.

  2. When I was younger, I wished I could have been Jennifer, because it was so popular and so many girls were named Jennifer, but now not so much and have grown to love my name. But still remember thinking that I would have loved Jennifer back then!! :)

  3. My name is okay I always wanted the name Sabrina for some reason and I don’t know why. I hated my last name though it was so hard to pronounce one of the reasons I got married so I can have a new one lol

  4. I love my name. My mom said her first choice in names for me was Erica. My daddy’s name is Derrick (Rick). Then she changed her mind. I’m glad. Erica is nice but it doesn’t suit me. Kenya perfect. When I gave out my “fake name” to guys it was Denise. I always like that name. If I had had a girl I Denise and Zoe were on the short list. Nellie does suit you! And for the record I can’t find my name on anything either. I guess I have to go to Africa for that.

    • I like Erica, but I agree Kenya is perfect for you. Its always been on of my favorite names. I BOL when I read that you had to go to Africa for that. TOO funny!

  5. My name is a family name (actually Carl is — grandpa, uncle, cousin all Carl’s)so I do love it and much better than what my mom wanted (Tonya). My grandpa could not say Tonya due to his German accent so my mom jokingly said “What do you want me to name her…Carla?!?” and he said yes. And there you have it.

I do get the name plate thing. Carla is hard to find and my sisters is impossible (Mika). I found Carla stickers once and my sister was so upset about it that when I came home from a football game she had stuck them all over everything in my room and I couldn’t get them off!

I wasn’t sure how to pronounce your name. So glad you told me! I love unusual names. I tried to give my kids names that aren’t real popular.

    • I love the story behind your name!! I thought Carla would have been easy to find for sure. Shows how much I know. A lot of folks don’t pronounce it correctly so you are not the first one!

  7. I do love my name and the unique spelling. There are several J.O.I.s out there though. I learned that when I grew up.

I love your name! All though at BBC I wasn’t sure if you were really Nellie outside of the blog. Remember me asking is that your real name, lol? Must just not of heard me!

    • I love your name too!! lol I seriously didn’t hear you. Even my coworkers call me nellie! When my boss says Schnelle in formal settings, it sounds weird! haha

  8. Yes, it has a certain something! And Nellie is the best nickname ever.
I grew up as Tammy, believe it or not. It wasn’t until after college when I could remember to think of myself as Tamara, that the switch happened. It couldn’t happen unless I was on board! So it’s still sorta new to me – only ten years in or so. So I love it. It’s unique and it rhymes with Camera, so given my profession…I wouldn’t change it!

I didn’t like Tammy as a kid, though! And my middle name is Eden. Tamara Eden. And my siblings used to make fun of me for that. Whatevs.

    • Thanks Tammy–uh Tamara. I think that is one of the reasons why I fell in love with your blog Tamara Camera it just FLOWS!

  9. I do not like my name. My father named me after Ms Howard University 1975. yep. True story

  10. No, I wouldn’t change my name. I’ve had it for this long! :) And you don’t hear too many Michelle’s anymore. My daughter’s name was supposed to be Gwen. It was the only name we chose. And then she was born and she didn’t look like a Gwen. We had no idea what to do! My mother in law to the rescue. She gave us Isabella, Tess and Mia. Mia it was.

    • Its true there aren’t a lot of Michelle’s any more, but it is still one of my favorite names :) Mia is absolutely beautiful.

  11. Kim’s, Jennifer’s and Susan’s were the top girls names when I was in school and I would have loved to be one of them when I was 10. Now I’m not 10 I love that my name is not common. :)

  12. I love my name, now that I’m older. Back in the day, I always wondered why I couldn’t have a name that ended with “iesha,” or “icka,” like everybody else at mt school. Or, why wasn’t it something fly like “Jasmine.” But, I was conveniently named after my loving Father (Paul) and God-Mother (Paula). My name’s popularity peaked in the 60′s. And has declined ever since (80′s baby). But, it’s simple, classic, and… NOW very unique. I wouldn’t trade it all. Okay, well maybe for “Jasmine.” Judge not.
Paula recently posted…Out of control. My Profile

    • NO JUDGEMENT! If the good Lord blesses me with a girl I totally want to name her Jasmine–AND its my grandmas name! So funny. I totally get it. Trust me. :)

  13. It’s so hard for me to see you as a Schnelle…but I suppose that’s because I’m so used to Nellie. Nellie definitely fits your writing style…and it’s so cute, just like you!

I hated my name as a kid. Ironically, I have no idea why. There is something about a name that makes it a part of you. Changing my name when I got married was the saddest part of the process for me. I loved my maiden name. But not I love my married name as well.

    • Thanks leslie, I love your name — I bet its easy to find pre made nameplates!! But I totally agree that there is something about a name that totally becomes you.

  14. I love your name – AND your nick name! I am not in love with Ilene but I’ve grown into it. My older IRL friends call me Ike and that’s been a fun nick name for me. It fits at times!

  15. I had to grow to like my name. My dad named me, and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why not name me something normal like my sister or brother, but over time, I’ve come to like it. It’s unique and I’m glad not many people actually have my name. Also, like you, without my unique name, I wouldn’t have a cool nickname–Kalley. :-)

  16. I love your name and your nickname! They are so unique, like you! I definitely like my name. My parents were going to name me Andrea (no!), Heather (beautiful but I know so many!), or Jennifer (not unique at all). I love that they chose something a bit more unique.

Also, great job on blogging every single day for a whole month. #impressed

    • Andrea!! I love Britt–I totally wanted to be that chipmunk. LOL is that weird?? Thank you. I am literally counting the minutes until Friday. WHEW!

  17. Let me start off by saying, you ROCK that outfit, girl! I like your name because its unique. I’d never encountered a Schnelle until you. I chose my daughter’s name because I liked the meaning but also because there were not many people with that name.

  18. I love your name! Your mom picked well.

My name is Ruthfaith. My parents compromised by having the names of their choice put together. I love my name, I’ve not met another person with it. When I was younger I definitely wanted a different name because people butchered it which is why everyone calls me Faith now but now I wouldn’t change it for anything. Unique is good :)

    • I love RuthFaith, but I’ll be honest I love Faith the most because it is the nickname of my aunt who is just like a mom to me. :) It is actually super popular in the caribbean to nickname your child that!

  19. I love your name. It is beautiful and definitely unique. Perfect for you my friend. :)
