Easy Oreo Dirt Pie Recipe
Oreo dirt pie is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is made with a chocolate oreo crust, a creamy chocolate filling, and a topping of whipped cream and Oreos.

This Oreo dirt pie is one of those recipes that looks like you spent way more time on it than you actually did. No stand mixer, no oven (if you go the premade crust route), and it comes together in about 10 minutes of actual work. The rest is just the refrigerator doing its job.
My kids request this constantly — it hits that specific combination of chocolate, cream, and crunch that is basically impossible to say no to. And because there are exactly five ingredients, it’s one of the first recipes I let them help with. Crushing the Oreos is basically a whole activity on its own.
WHAT YOU’RE MAKING
A creamy chocolate pudding filling — made lighter and fluffier by folding in Cool Whip — sits in an Oreo cookie crust and gets topped with a layer of whipped topping and a generous blanket of crushed Oreos on top. The crushed topping is where the “dirt” part comes from, and kids find this endlessly entertaining.
Two crust options: Store-bought Oreo pie crust (saves time, perfectly fine) or a quick homemade Oreo crust that takes about 15 minutes including bake and cool time. Both work. The homemade crust has a slightly deeper flavor and a firmer texture that holds cleaner slices.
What ingredients do you need for making this delicious oreo dirt pie?

Oreo pie crust, premade or homemade
- 1 – 3.4oz box instant chocolate pudding
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 tub whipped topping
- 12 oreos, crushed
For Homemade Crust
- 2 cups oreos, crushed
- 3 tablespoons no salt butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons sugar

INGREDIENT NOTES
Oreo pie crust (premade): The Nabisco/Oreo brand premade crust from the baking aisle works perfectly. If you’re short on time, this is the move.
For the homemade crust — 2 cups crushed Oreos (about 20 cookies), 3 tbsp unsalted butter (melted), 2 tbsp sugar: Pulse the whole cookies (cream filling included) in a food processor or crush in a zip-lock bag with a rolling pin. The filling adds moisture and helps the crust bind. Mix with melted butter and sugar, press firmly into a 9-inch pie plate, and bake at 350°F for 10 minutes. Cool completely before adding the filling — a warm crust will thin out your pudding layer.
Instant chocolate pudding (1 box, 3.4 oz): Must be instant — not cook-and-serve. Cook-and-serve pudding requires heating and won’t set the same way in a cold pie. Store-brand instant chocolate pudding works fine.
Whole milk (2 cups): Use whole milk for the best set and creamiest texture. 2% works as a backup but the filling will be slightly less rich. Do not use non-dairy milk — the pudding won’t set properly.
Whipped topping, 8 oz tub (such as Cool Whip), thawed: Half goes into the filling, half goes on top. Make sure it’s fully thawed before using — cold Cool Whip straight from the freezer won’t fold smoothly into the pudding. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for 30 minutes.
12 Oreos, crushed (for topping): About 1 cup of crumbs. Crush them however you like — food processor for fine crumbs, zip-lock bag for chunkier pieces. The chunks give a better texture contrast on the finished pie.

How Do You Make Oreo Dirt Pie?
If making the homemade crust (do this first): Crush 2 cups of Oreos (about 20 cookies, filling included) into fine crumbs. Mix with 3 tbsp melted unsalted butter and 2 tbsp sugar until the mixture resembles wet sand. Press firmly and evenly into a 9-inch pie plate — use the bottom of a measuring cup to get a flat, compact base and sides. Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes. Remove and cool completely before filling. Do not rush this step.
Make the filling: Pour 2 cups of cold whole milk into a large bowl. Add the instant chocolate pudding powder and whisk vigorously for 2 full minutes — the mixture will thicken noticeably. Let it sit for 5 minutes to set up slightly.
Fold in the whipped topping: Add half of the thawed Cool Whip (about 1 cup / half the 8 oz tub) to the pudding. Fold gently with a spatula — don’t stir aggressively or you’ll deflate it. The goal is a light, mousse-like texture. A few streaks are fine.
Fill the crust: Spread the pudding mixture evenly into the prepared crust (premade or cooled homemade). Smooth the top with a spatula.
Add the topping: Spread the remaining Cool Whip over the top of the pudding layer, covering it completely to the edges.
Add the crushed Oreo topping: Sprinkle the 12 crushed Oreos evenly over the whipped topping. Press down very gently so they adhere.
Chill: Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before slicing. For cleaner slices and a firmer set, chill for 2–3 hours or overnight.

TIPS
Cold ingredients are non-negotiable. The pudding filling sets because of the interaction between the cold milk and the instant pudding starch. If your milk is room temperature, your filling may not set firmly enough to slice cleanly. Use cold milk straight from the refrigerator.
Don’t add the crushed Oreo topping too early. The cookies absorb moisture from the whipped topping and will soften if they sit on the pie for more than a few hours. If making the pie a day ahead, add the crushed Oreo topping right before serving.
For clean slices: Run a sharp knife under hot water, wipe dry, and slice. Repeat between cuts. This gives you the clean layered look in the photos.
Let the homemade crust cool completely. If you pour the pudding filling into a warm crust, the heat will thin the mixture and the pie won’t set properly.
Don’t overmix when folding in the Cool Whip. The whole point of folding the whipped topping into the pudding is to create a lighter, mousse-like texture. Stirring hard deflates it and you’ll end up with a denser, flatter filling.

VARIATIONS
Golden Oreo dirt pie: Swap the chocolate Oreo crust for a Golden Oreo crust (same process) and use vanilla instant pudding instead of chocolate. Use Golden Oreos for the topping too. Completely different pie — lighter, vanilla-forward, great for spring and summer.
Chocolate overload version: Add a layer of chocolate fudge or hot fudge sauce on top of the crust before adding the pudding filling. Drizzle more on top before the whipped topping layer.
Peanut butter dirt pie: Use chocolate pudding and add 2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter to the pudding mixture before folding in the Cool Whip. Top with Reese’s Pieces or crushed Nutter Butters instead of Oreos.
Individual dirt cups: Skip the pie format entirely — layer the pudding mixture and whipped topping in individual plastic cups and top with crushed Oreos and a gummy worm sticking out. Classic kids’ party dessert.
Mint chocolate version: Add ¼ tsp peppermint extract to the pudding filling and use Mint Oreos for the crust and topping. This pairs well with the Oreo Mint Pie recipe linked below.

FAQs
No — this recipe specifically requires instant pudding. Cook-and-serve pudding needs heat to activate and sets differently; it won’t produce the right texture in a cold no-bake pie. Look for “instant” on the box label.
Yes. Vanilla, white chocolate, cheesecake, and butterscotch all work well with an Oreo crust. Chocolate is the classic, but vanilla gives you a cookies-and-cream flavor profile that’s just as good.
One standard 8 oz tub. Half goes into the filling, half goes on top. Make sure it’s fully thawed before using — thaw overnight in the refrigerator or for 30 minutes at room temperature.
Up to 4 days covered in the refrigerator. The crust softens slightly over time, which some people prefer. Note that the crushed Oreo topping will soften after the first day — add it fresh if making the pie ahead.
Yes — wrap tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving. Add fresh crushed Oreos on top after thawing since the frozen ones will be soft.
Yes, and it actually improves overnight — the filling sets more firmly and the flavors come together. Make the pie the night before, cover and refrigerate, and add the crushed Oreo topping right before serving for maximum crunch.
The 10-minute bake firms up the crust and keeps it from crumbling when you slice the pie. You can skip it for a fully no-bake version, but the crust will be softer and may fall apart when sliced. If skipping the bake, chill the pressed crust in the freezer for 15 minutes before adding the filling.

This is genuinely one of the easiest desserts on the site and it absolutely never misses. Bring it to a cookout, make it for a birthday, or put it together on a random Tuesday because someone asked for dessert and you have 10 minutes. It works every time.
