  • 2 ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ¾ teaspoon almond extract

  • Red food dye
  • Pink, red and white sprinkles
  • Here is how you make Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies:

    Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a large mixing bowl combine all the dry ingredients of flour, baking powder, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk together and set aside.In a separate mixing bowl combine the butter and sugar, blending together until fluffy.

    Add the egg to the mixture and combine. Add the sour cream and extracts to the mixture and combine. Take your dry ingredients that were set aside and fold into the wet ingredients until a dough has formed. Make this dough into a large ball, flatten slightly and wrap in plastic wrap.

    Refrigerate the dough for 1 hour. Prep a clean surface with flour and  a rolling pin.Preheat the oven to 375 degrees fahrenheit. Take the chilled dough and place on the floured surface rolling the dough out to about a ¼ inch thickness. Take a heart cookie cutter and cut out the cookies, placing on the prepared parchment covered baking sheet.

    Take any leftover scraps and reroll out to create as many cookies as you can with the dough. Bake in the oven for 8-9 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are starting to turn color. While the cookies are in the oven dye your buttercream frosting red. Let the cookies cool completely out of the oven, about 20 minutes. Spread each cookie with a thin layer of  buttercream frosting and top with lots of valentine’s themed sprinkles. Enjoy!
