How To Stay Sane On The Treadmill

As someone who’s spent a significant chunk of my running life on the treadmill, I can testify that it can get a bit dull. Especially when the weather isn’t exactly in your favor and you have to endure long runs inside. If you’re looking for tips to make spending a long time on the treadmill more manageable, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s how you can conquer those seemingly endless miles:

Getting Started with Treadmill Settings

To get started, it’s crucial to understand how to adjust your treadmill’s settings. Play around with speed and incline to add variety and simulate outdoor running conditions. And remember, maintaining good form while running on a treadmill is just as important as when you’re outside.

Interval Training: Break the Monotony

Next, let’s talk about interval training. It’s a powerful way to break up the monotony of running in place and can actually improve your running efficiency. By varying your speed or incline, you’ll not only make the time pass faster but also get a more effective workout.

Creating an Inspiring Atmosphere

One key aspect that aids in maintaining sanity during lengthy treadmill runs is creating an inspiring environment. I love to Netflix during my runs on a larger screen like a tablet. A captivating show can take your mind off the time. Also, consider listening to motivational playlists, engaging podcasts, or even audiobooks. You might also want to try out virtual running apps that can simulate different environments and give you a sense of progression.

Don’t Forget to Fuel Up

A common mistake I made when doing long runs on the treadmill was forgetting to bring snacks. Remember to fuel your body, especially during long workouts. It’s easy to remember when you’re heading out for a long outdoor run, but don’t forget it when you’re on the treadmill!

Treadmill Safety Measures

Safety is paramount during long treadmill runs. Make sure you’re aware of the safety features of your treadmill, like the safety key and automatic stop features. Keep your running space clear of any objects to prevent accidents.

Treadmill Maintenance and Common Issues

A well-maintained treadmill will ensure that your long runs are enjoyable. Keep your treadmill clean, check for any signs of wear and tear, and handle them immediately. Anticipate common treadmill-related issues like chafing and blisters, and make sure you have remedies at hand.

Mind Games to Stay Engaged

Let’s not underestimate the power of your mind. Break your run into smaller, more manageable segments. You can also employ visualization techniques, imagining you’re running in a beautiful park or preparing for a big race.

With these tips, your treadmill sessions will not only become more bearable but more productive too. Remember, the ultimate goal is to maintain your fitness levels and enjoy your runs, even if they’re indoors!

Learning from Others

One of my personal favorites is to observe others at the gym. You might learn a thing or two from their techniques. Plus, it’s a great distraction! 1. Oh the people watching!! My last gym the treadmills faced a wall (at least they all had tvs) but my current gym faces the strength training floor and I totally people watch. The gym is a great place for it!! Love the snack tip, too, that’s something lots of runners forget when they’re stuck on the treadmill.

  2. Snacks are definitely a must for long runs on the treadmill! I used to bring boxes of raisins rather than gels, because they took longer to eat and that gave some entertainment.

  3. So treadmills really aren’t the greatest, but I never understood why people dread them so much. I just hookup my music and get lost in the music. That being said, I really do prefer to run outside.

  4. The Husband loathes running on the treadmill (no, that’s not an exaggeration). But sometimes it’s necessary. It doesn’t bother me as much, but then again I don’t really go for long runs. Going to pass this series along to my husband, because with another race to train for, you know he’s going to need these tips!
