Master the art of making homemade flour tortillas with this simple recipe. In just 30 minutes, create soft, chewy tortillas perfect for any dish.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups ap flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 8 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. To a large bowl, combine the flour, baking power and salt, mix well.
  2. Melt the butter and water together in 30 second increments.  (this took about 90 seconds)
  3. Allow it to cool slightly or be very careful on the next steps.
  4. Slowly add the water/butter to the flour mixture and mix with your hands.
  5. Continue to slowly add and mix, slowly add and mix until all the liquid has been poured in.
  6. Once everything is well incorporated you will have a sticky dough
  7. On a clean, dry surface, knead the dough for 3-5 mins.
  8. It will be elastic and smooth.
  9. Place in a clean bowl, cover with a kitchen towel and let rest for 15 mins.
  10. Divide the dough into even sized balls 
  11. Roll each into a ball:
  12. Take one piece of dough and use your hands to roll it into a ball. 
  13. To do this, cup your hand over the dough and use a circular motion to roll the dough against the work surface. Apply light pressure as you roll to form a smooth ball.
  14. Continue until all balls are made and cover with a towel to make sure they don’t dry out while making they rest.
  15. Lightly sprinkle with flour and using a rolling pin, roll out each ball of dough into a thin circle about 8 inches in diameter.
  16. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. 
  17. Once hot, place a tortilla on the skillet and cook for about 30 seconds on each side, or until the tortilla is lightly browned and bubbly.
  18. Repeat with the remaining tortillas, stacking them on a plate as they are cooked and covering with a towel to keep them warm.
