What are magic cookie bars?

Magic Cookie Bars, or 7-Layer Bars, are a sweet and chewy dessert that has been around since the 1950’s. They’re also known under other names such as “Hello Dollys,” “White House bars” “Hello dolly bars” or just Lazy Day Bars!

The basic recipe is typically graham crackers, butter, sugar, chocolate chips and a few more easy ingredients. Combined together and baked, the result is a sweet gooey treat that everyone loves!

Magic Cookie Bars are popular in America but they originate from Australia or New Zealand. Their name derives from the fact that you only need to use a few ingredients and there’s no baking involved!

How do you make Magic Cookie Bars?

The magic cookie bar recipe couldn’t be simpler. You take graham crackers, butter, brown sugar and chocolate chips then bake everything together for 10 minutes. The mixture is cooled before adding coconut, walnuts and coconut. Then slice them up into squares! That’s it! A delicious treat ready in less than 20 minutes!

What ingredients do you need for these magic cookie bars?

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter
  • 1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup coconut flakes 
  • 2-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or if you like, peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips or butterscotch chips)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Super simple ingredients you likely already have on hand! You will have a graham cracker base at the bottom of the pan in this traditional version of this magic bar recipe. These bad boys are one of the easiest desserts to make for bake sales. You can even add a sprinkle of sea salt if you want to be fancy!

These seven layer magic cookie bars are a simple dessert you can make in a 9-inch baking pan. They are great for a school bake sale or even a holiday celebration. You can cut these seven layer bars into small squares and the end result is a classic dessert that is so good!

We used semisweet chocolate chips for our layers of chocolate chips but you can use whatever kinds of chocolate chips you desire. These coconut dream bars simple recipe is one of my favorite baked goods.

Easy Magic Cookie Bars aka Hello Dolly Bars

These super fun magic cookie bars are so good and easy to make with your own customizable ingredients!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter
  • 1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 2-1/2 cups chocolate chips, semi-sweet
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 
  2. Spray sides of 13x9 -inch baking pan. In a small bowl, mix together your butter and graham crackers. Spread evenly in your pan
  3. Drizzle the condensed milk over the crumbs.
  4. Layer with chocolate chips, coconuts and then nuts.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes or until the edges are light brown. Cool completely before cutting. Store in an airtight container.
