Adorable Cookie Monster Cookies

Cookie Monster is the one character every kid identifies with immediately — because Cookie Monster is all of us.

My kids went through a full Sesame Street phase and Cookie Monster was the favorite. When I started planning a Sesame Street birthday spread I knew I wanted an actual Cookie Monster cookie — not just a blue cupcake. A chocolate chip cookie with blue frosting and cookie crumbles on top, the whole thing a tribute to his one true love. The kids absolutely lost their minds when they saw them.

The best part? No decorating skills required. You frost the cookie blue, pile on the crumbles, and every single one looks like it belongs at a Sesame Street party. My kids helped make every batch.

  • all purpose flour
  • baking soda
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • sugar
  • egg
  • vanilla extract
  • semisweet chocolate chips

Topping:

  • vanilla frosting
  • Blue food coloring
  • Chips Ahoy Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Oreo Mini Cookies

Start by preheating your oven to 350°F and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, beat your softened butter with the brown sugar and white sugar until it’s light and creamy — about 2 minutes. This is the foundation of a good chewy cookie so don’t rush this step.

Add your egg and vanilla and mix until everything is fully combined.

Add the flour and baking soda and stir until a soft dough comes together. Stop as soon as it’s combined — overmixing here makes tough cookies.

Fold in the chocolate chips.

Use a large cookie scoop or ¼ cup measure to portion out 8–10 large dough balls onto your prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Give each one a gentle flatten with your palm.

Bake for 12–14 minutes. You’re looking for edges that are set and lightly golden — the centers will still look a little underdone and that’s exactly right. They firm up as they cool, so pull them when the edges are done.

Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then move them to a wire rack. Give them at least 30 minutes to cool completely before you frost — warm cookies will melt the frosting right off.

While the cookies cool, make your blue frosting. Stir blue gel food coloring into 1 cup of vanilla frosting starting with 3–4 drops. Cookie Monster is a bright royal blue so keep adding until you get there — you may need 5–6 drops.

Spread or pipe the blue frosting over each cooled cookie, covering the whole surface.

Now for the fun part — crush your mini Chips Ahoy and mini Oreos into irregular pieces. You want visible chunks, not powder. Press the crumbles across the top of each frosted cookie while the frosting is still soft so they stick.

Let everything set for about 15 minutes before serving or stacking, and you’re done.

These adorable cookies are decorated with a Cookie Monster theme. They have blue frosting and cookie crumbles that mimic when cookie monster devours his cookies on the classic show Sesame Street.

About These Cookies

These are inspired by Cookie Monster rather than a literal portrait of him. You get the blue frosting that immediately says “Cookie Monster,” and the crushed Chips Ahoy and Oreo crumbles on top that mimic the cookies he’s always eating. The effect is playful and recognizable without any decorating skills required — no piping tips, no steady hand, no special equipment beyond a frosting bag or a butter knife.

That’s what makes these perfect for making with kids. There’s no precise placement, no technique to master — you frost the cookie blue and pile the crumbles on top. Every cookie looks a little different and that’s part of the fun.

If you want to take them further and add a face, you can press two mini Oreo cookies upright into the wet frosting for eyes. But the base recipe is intentionally simple and works great as-is for any Sesame Street party table.

FAQs

Do these cookies actually look like Cookie Monster?

They’re inspired by Cookie Monster rather than a detailed portrait — you get the bright blue color and the cookie crumbles that reference his cookie obsession. There’s no face or decorating skill required, which makes them easy to make with kids. On a Sesame Street party table they read immediately as Cookie Monster themed.

Can I add a face to make them look more like Cookie Monster?

Yes — if you want to go further, press two mini Oreo cookies upright into the wet blue frosting for eyes while it’s still soft. That’s the easiest way to add a face without any additional ingredients or equipment.

Can I use store-bought cookie dough instead of making from scratch?

Yes. Pillsbury refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough works great as the base. Roll into balls, flatten slightly, and bake per package directions. The blue frosting and crumble topping is what makes these special.

How many cookies does this recipe make?

8–10 large cookies using a large cookie scoop. If you use a standard cookie scoop instead, you’ll get 12–14 smaller cookies with a slightly shorter bake time of 10–11 minutes.

Can I make the dough ahead?

Yes. Make the dough up to 2 days ahead and refrigerate it covered. Let it come to room temperature for 15 minutes before scooping and baking. You can also freeze portioned dough balls for up to 3 months and bake from frozen, adding 2–3 minutes to the bake time.

Can I Use Store-Bought Cookie Dough?

Yes — and there’s no shame in it. If you’re making these for a birthday party and already have 15 other things to do, Pillsbury refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough works perfectly as the base. Roll into balls, flatten slightly, and bake according to package directions. The decorating is what makes these special, and you can put all your energy there.
If you’re making the dough from scratch (recipe below), make sure your butter is softened to room temperature — not melted, not cold. It should leave an indent when you press it but not slide around. This is what gives you that proper creamy texture when you cream it with the sugar.
