The One Where I Met Ryan Reynolds & Watched Snails Race

I have lived in New York City for all my life and I have always watched the Today Show on my couch. So when I got the opportunity to not only attend a live taping but hang out in the press pen, I was more than happy to get up at 5am and make it happen!

The Today Show was doing an awesome splash promotion of the movie Turbo. If you haven’t heard about Turbo the movie you will!

TURBO – July 17 in 3D

From the makers of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, TURBO is a high-velocity 3D comedy about an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive when he miraculously attains the power of super-speed. But after making fast friends with a crew of streetwise, tricked-out es-car-goes, Turbo learns that no one succeeds on their own. So he puts his heart and shell on the line to help his pals achieve their dreams, before Turbo-charging his own impossible dream: winning the Indy 500.

Starring the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Ken Jeong, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Snoop Dogg, Samuel L. Jackson

When I arrived I was in awe of the set that had been created. It was a snail race!

So when I initially heard about the event I actually thought that real snails would be climbing up a wall–racing. I didn’t ask any questions,  I just agreed and prayed for the little buggers not to go splat on national television.

To my relief there were snail props. Whew!

The Turbo Challenge:

Members of the Today show including Savannah and Matt Lauer and *ahem* Ryan Reynolds would be playing skee ball and the higher the score the faster the wall snails would go.

We had the best view, right behind the game! We were also on camera a few times. By the 3rd time I had perfected my camera face. (This may or may not have included pursed lips).

I was “in the pit” with a lot of fun mommy bloggers and I was even provided refreshments, which was desperately needed at 6:50 in the morning.

Oh, hello there Ryan

Finally Ryan came out and this man is nothing short of gorgeous in person! He came out said hi to us immediately and asked if we were the bloggers, everyone else replied yes, I think I mumbled something remarkably close to really good gibberish. But I did have my photography wits about me to get some really awesome shots.

Finally it was time for the race! Turbo aka Ryan Reynolds won, of course and Matt was a little miffed that he lost. It was all quite adorable. See the coverage of the race I recorded here:

One in one with Ryan Reynolds

As soon as that was complete we were whisked away to a wich craft that had been reserved for us in Rockefeller Center. Ryan came by almost immediately and sat right in front of us for a quick q&a.

See the fun interview here, pardon my constant giggling but the man is so darn charming!

He talked about Turbo and how much fun he had playing the character, some more personal details about himself.

Turbo looks like its really going to be an awesome movie filled with really great messages!  I can’t wait to take my boy to see it! Meeting Ryan (yes, we are *totally* on a first name basis) has honestly made me want to see the film even more!

Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post I was just invited as media for coverage of the event 🙂 All opinions of Ryan are my own.

Would you take the kids to see Turbo?  What would you ask Ryan?

O.M.G. What an awesome experience! And don’t feel bad. I would have been a giggling, gibber-spewing, hot mess if I was that close to Ryan Reynolds! That close-up is incredible!

The giggling is charming! I also would have thought the snail race involved real snails. Whew! He seems like a cool guy honestly and he’s very, very cute. What a great opportunity! I would see the movie – my daughter just turned four and we’ve never been to a theater. Now that it’s a summer, I think it’s time. A date. Just the two of us.

Look at you! You’re the press! You are moving and shaking honey. My daughter hasn’t shown much interest in Turbo. I’m sure if we take her she’d enjoy it.

How cool is that. I haven’t seen the trailer…probably because I don’t watch TV that often. I love the today show…although I almost never watch it.lol It’s so awesome that you got an invite and you got an opportunity to attend. Forget Ryan, you are the celebrity I wanna meet 🙂 Great post!

Wow – this might be favorite of all the cool experiences you’ve shared. Ryan Reynolds in person?! I think I would check off half the things on my list of things “to do” to have that experience!!
Thanks for letting us live virtually through the cool video!!!

Wow! What a great opportunity and fun time! Those are wonderful pics. I’m so glad you had the chance to experience that. I think Turbo is one of the two movie choices at the drive in. My hubs and I love to go there in the summer. I’ll have to make him go see it with me. Actually, I’m pretty sure he’ll enjoy it too.

I am only knowledgeable of the kid movies when my God daughter picks them out for us to go (me take a nap) see. I am sure this will be the next one. I used to watch the today show a lot in college. Super cool going to be a part of it.

I saw it one time but never paid attention to it. My son thinks he is too old for kid movies so he didn’t even mention it to me. Ryan is in everything these days lol

Holly crap! I would not even be able to muster up any sort of conversation at all. I watch The Proposal a minimum of three times a month. Minimum! And then I usually add in one of his other movies. I also religiously watched 2 guys, a girl, and a pizza place.

Reply
Nellie July 21, 2013 - 8:12 pm

The proposal is actually one of my top faves too!
