Ingredients and Why They Work

  • Whole Milk – This is the creamy base that keeps your eggnog rich but not too heavy. It gives that silky texture that holds everything together.
  • Cinnamon Stick – Adds depth and warmth. It’s that subtle spice that makes your kitchen smell like pure holiday magic.
  • Ground Nutmeg – Brings in that signature eggnog flavor — slightly nutty, slightly sweet, totally festive.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract – A touch of vanilla rounds out the flavor and ties the spices together beautifully.
  • Egg Yolks – These make the eggnog thick and luscious. Think of them as the secret weapon for that velvety, custard-like consistency.
  • Granulated Sugar – Sweetens everything up and balances the spices perfectly.
  • Heavy Cream – Adds that final rich finish, making the eggnog irresistibly smooth and dreamy.
  • Ground Cinnamon (for topping) – A finishing touch that adds a sprinkle of flavor and a little sparkle to each serving.

How to Make Homemade Eggnog

  1. Start with the base.
In a medium saucepan, pour in the milk, nutmeg, and vanilla. Whisk everything gently over low heat — you’re looking to warm it slowly so the flavors blend without scalding the milk.
  2. Add your cinnamon stick.
Drop it in and let it simmer for about 3–4 minutes. Your kitchen will smell incredible right about now — this is when the magic starts.
  3. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar.
In a separate bowl, whisk your egg yolks and sugar together until the mixture turns pale yellow and slightly thick. This step is important — it’s what gives your eggnog that creamy body.
  4. Temper the eggs (slow and steady wins).
Scoop a spoonful of the hot milk into your egg mixture while whisking constantly. This warms up the eggs gently so they don’t scramble. Continue adding small amounts — about a quarter cup total — until everything’s smooth and combined.
  5. Combine and cook.
Slowly pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the rest of the warm milk. Keep whisking as it cooks over medium heat. You’ll notice it start to thicken — it should coat the back of your spoon when it’s ready.
  6. Finish with the cream.
Once thickened, remove it from the heat and stir in the heavy cream. That’s when it turns into pure velvet.
  7. Chill and serve.
Let it cool completely, then chill until ready to serve. When it’s time, top with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dollop of whipped cream, and slide in a cinnamon stick if you’re feeling fancy.
Homemade eggnog recipe

Every December, once the Christmas lights go up, my kitchen officially turns into Santa’s snack station. My family knows that when they smell cinnamon and vanilla wafting through the house, mom’s whipping up homemade eggnog. The kids always want to “help” — which usually means taking turns stirring and then sneaking spoonfuls before it’s even cooled. My husband claims he’s just “taste testing,” but somehow half the batch disappears before I can even chill it.

One year, we set up a little “eggnog bar” with whipped cream, mini candy canes, and cinnamon sticks — and let’s just say, it was a hit. The best part? It’s become our little family tradition. Every cup feels like a warm hug from the holidays themselves.

FAQs About Homemade Eggnog

Can I make this eggnog ahead of time?

Absolutely! This recipe actually tastes even better the next day once the flavors have had time to mingle. Just keep it covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Can I use dairy alternatives?

You can! Almond milk or oat milk can work, though the texture will be a little thinner. If you go this route, keep the heavy cream for richness.

Why do I need to temper the eggs?

Tempering keeps the eggs from scrambling when they meet the hot milk. It’s the key step for that smooth, custardy texture — no chunks allowed!

How do I make it thicker?

If you like your eggnog extra rich, cook it a bit longer on medium heat or use a little more cream. Just remember to stir constantly so it doesn’t burn.
