Blogalicious 5 2013 Recap – Day One

Blogalicious 5 — Day One

When I decided I was going to Blogalicious 5 at the beginning of the year, I made the decision based out of my pure jealously of the ladies in Vegas last year for Blogalicious 12. Then when the location of Atlanta was announced — it was a no brainer.

I had a semi easy travel experience to Blogalicious 5, I arrived about 20 minutes later and missed the welcome opening but I was able to catch the opening session that spoke about bloggers working with brands (which is always such a white hot topic at every conference I attend!) And because I learned how to share in the sandbox, here are some of the nuggets I took away from that session:

  • Be consistent and professional when doing sponsored posts both with the brand and with the PR Firm
  • ALWAYS be on time
  • Always reply to emails even if the opportunity is not for you (I’ve gotten better about this!)
  • WRITE QUALITY CONTENT, Google is watching
  • If you don’t get a campaign–don’t go on twitter and have a fit. “complain in private and be gracious in public” <– Love that!! I have been rejected a million times but I have never go on SM to complain…cmon son.
  • Don’t take every offer, wait and negotiate
  • DON’T feel like you have to follow the crowd!

After that we had a fun networking mixer. I always suck at these things however because I always meet one person, get so engrossed with them and I really barely make it around to anyone else, lol. Its okay though, the peeps I met were quality!

Finally I saw a lot of my friends (after years these ladies feel closer to me than some of my real life friends–they have become real life friends). I gave long loving hugs to each one of them and I knew right then this conference would be pretty epic. We had a couple more mixer type sessions then we were downstairs for some grub before the scandal party commenced!

I didn’t eat much at all during the day so I was excited to eat! Until I realized there were two options, fish and chicken. Womp.

Since I ate none of the two, I went around to the various shops and sponsors. There was a particular booth that I simply could not get enough of:

Finally it was time for the scandal party! I was beyond excited for this! (I am not sure which I was more excited for the party or the show premiering, my guess it was the latter!) Everyone had their best Olivia Pope fits on!

There was some yummy steak on the menu, so I was able to finally get some protein in my system. The show was in a word: flawless. There was something about being in a room with a couple hundred women, all reacting to the same insane scenes. We had really great hosts including Luvvie from the hilarious pop culture blog Awesomely Luvvie. I need a host of Scandal every single time I watch it, so much better than commercials!!

There were squeals, loud gasps, clutched pearls, and most of all screams when the dialogue slayed us into a million pieces.

After the party we headed up to bed because we had to run a race in the morning! That wraps up day one, stay tuned for day 2 recap which includes a race recap, some amazing inspiration and and 80s Party you have to see to believe!

What did you think of the season premiere of Scandal? Do you do networking mixers?

  1. I’ve not watched scandal. The pictures of you are just adorable!

I have to admit that I’m not sure why someone would complain about not getting a campaign on SM. It seems that it would just draw attention to the fact that you didn’t get picked and therefore tell another brand you’re not worth working with.

  16. “Complain in private, be gracious in public” ….. I’ve never heard it put better. I think I might need to frame it and put it up in our house. One question, do you ever feel like some of the PR firms that contact you are just a good spam cover? I don’t do sponsored/paid content for now, but I do get some offers and half the time they just look really sketchy!

  23. That looks like it was such a fun event! I am impressed with how much you get around!! Those tips are also great…there have been campaigns that I have not gotten that I really wanted, but I would never dream of complaining on SM. But I never thought to wait and negotiate. I am looking forward to going to another SITS event in Dallas next month, so hoping to get some good tips there too!
