Easy Chocolate Covered July 4th Pretzels Recipe

Four ingredients and a little patience is genuinely all this takes — pretzels dipped in white candy melt, drizzled with red and blue once that sets, and finished with sprinkles before the drizzle hardens. No oven, nothing to bake, just dipping and waiting. They hold up well for a few days, so this is an easy one to knock out ahead of a 4th of July gathering instead of leaving it for the day itself.

50 mini pretzels: Pretzel rods or pretzel twists both work — rods give more surface area for the drizzle to land cleanly, twists are easier for small hands to dip if kids are helping. Make sure pretzels are fully dry before dipping; any moisture on the surface can cause the candy coating to seize or look cloudy once set.

8 oz white candy melts: Standard candy melting wafers (Wilton or Ghirardelli) work well. If you don’t have candy melts on hand, white chocolate chips with a teaspoon of coconut oil stirred in (to thin the consistency for easier dipping) work as a substitute.

⅓ cup red candy melts (plus, if adding blue, an additional ⅓ cup blue candy melts): A small quantity is enough since this is a drizzle, not a full coating. If using white chocolate chips tinted with food coloring instead of pre-colored candy melts, use oil-based candy coloring rather than standard liquid food coloring — liquid coloring can cause melted chocolate to seize and turn grainy.

Red, white, and blue sprinkles: Have these measured out and within reach before you start drizzling — the window to add sprinkles while the drizzle is still soft is short, and fumbling for the sprinkle jar mid-drizzle means some pretzels miss the window.

Instructions

Step 1: Melt and dip
Melt the white candy melts according to package instructions, stirring until completely smooth. Dip each pretzel into the melted candy, using a fork to lift it out and tap the fork gently against the bowl’s edge to let excess coating drip off.

Step 2: Set the base coat
Place the coated pretzels on parchment or wax paper and let them harden completely, about 30 minutes. Don’t rush this step — the red and blue drizzle needs a fully set white base to land on cleanly.

Step 3: Melt and drizzle red
Melt the red candy melts according to package instructions and transfer to a piping bag (or a zip-top bag with a small corner snipped off). Drizzle over half the pretzels (or across all of them, depending on your color layout preference).

Step 4: Add sprinkles immediately
While the red drizzle is still soft, immediately top with sprinkles — they won’t adhere once the drizzle hardens, so work pretzel by pretzel rather than drizzling the whole batch first and coming back to add sprinkles after.

Step 5: Melt and drizzle blue
Melt the blue candy melts the same way and drizzle over the remaining pretzels (or in a separate pattern alongside the red, on the same pretzels, if you want all three colors on every piece). Add sprinkles immediately while still soft, same as the red step.

Step 6: Final set
Let the drizzled pretzels harden completely, about 30 minutes, before serving or storing.

STORAGE

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze in a zip-top freezer bag for up to 2 months — let them come to room temperature before serving to avoid condensation forming on the chocolate coating, which can make it look cloudy or feel tacky.

Freezing Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Freezing chocolate-covered pretzels is easy. Just place them in a Ziploc bag or a freezer bag and store them in the freezer. Before serving, let them come to room temperature to avoid any condensation forming on the chocolate.

FAQS

Can I substitute white chocolate chips for candy melts?

Yes — stir in a teaspoon of coconut oil to thin the chips to a dipping consistency. If you want to color white chocolate to match a candy melt color, use oil-based candy coloring rather than liquid food coloring, since liquid coloring can cause melted chocolate to seize.

Why didn’t my sprinkles stick?

They were likely added after the drizzle started to set. Sprinkles need to go on while the candy coating is still fully soft — there’s a window of about 30-60 seconds after drizzling before it starts to firm up. Work in small batches so you can drizzle and sprinkle each pretzel before moving to the next.

How do I make these without buying separate red and blue candy melts?

Tint melted white chocolate or white candy melts with oil-based candy coloring to get red and blue tones. This works well if you only want to keep one type of melting chocolate on hand and tint it as needed.

How far ahead can I make these for a party?

They hold up well for up to a week stored in an airtight container at room temperature, so making them 2-3 days ahead of a gathering is easy and recommended.
