Silly Questions To Ask Kids: Free Printable

Looking to pass the time with with some fun ice breakers? Here are some fun silly questions to ask kids in this free printable!

10 silly questions to ask kids

My kids will talk your ear off about literally anything — except, sometimes, the things you actually want to know about. Ask my daughter how her day was and you get “fine.” Ask her what animal she’d be if she could shapeshift and you get a seven-minute monologue with follow-up questions.

Silly questions are one of the best parenting tools I’ve found for getting kids to actually open up. There’s something about a low-stakes, no-wrong-answer question that relaxes the defenses and gets kids talking. And once they’re talking about something silly, they’ll often keep talking about the real stuff too.

I made this free printable sheet of silly questions to ask kids after years of using this kind of conversation starter with my own three kids — in the car, at the dinner table, waiting at restaurants, and during Girl Scout meetings when we need a quick icebreaker before we get into the session. It works across ages, it doesn’t require any prep, and the answers will absolutely surprise you.

WHY SILLY QUESTIONS WORK

There’s a reason speech-language pathologists, therapists, and teachers use open-ended questions with kids — they build language skills, encourage creative thinking, and make kids feel heard without putting them on the spot. Silly questions take that one step further by removing any pressure to give a “right” answer. Kids who shut down when asked direct questions about school, friends, or feelings will often light up when you ask something ridiculous.

As a mom who thinks a lot about how kids engage with the world — including the digital world — I’ve noticed that kids who are comfortable with open, playful conversation at home are also more comfortable coming to you when something harder comes up. Silly questions are a low-stakes way to keep those communication channels open.

WHAT’S IN THE PRINTABLE

The printable is a single colorful sheet with a collection of open-ended silly questions designed to spark imagination and get kids thinking creatively. Questions range from the playfully absurd (“If your pet could talk, what would its voice sound like?”) to the wonderfully hypothetical (“If you could have any superpower for one day, what would you do with it?”). The sheet is designed to be printed and used as-is — no prep, no cutting, no assembly required.

Best age range: Approximately 5–12, though younger kids with a little help and older kids who haven’t completely lost their sense of play will enjoy these too. Many of the questions work just as well for adults answering alongside the kids.

Print tip: Standard 8.5×11 paper, color or black-and-white both work. For repeated use, laminate the sheet and use dry-erase markers so kids can write their answers and erase for the next round.

WHEN TO USE THEM

Car rides and road trips: This is where we use them most. Long stretches of highway with no screens? Perfect silly question territory. Go around the car and everyone answers — including the adults.

Dinner table: Keep the printable in a kitchen drawer and pull it out when conversation goes quiet. One question per meal is enough to keep things lively.

Waiting rooms and restaurants: Waiting for food to arrive is prime time. No screens, captive audience, just enough boredom that a silly question feels like a gift.

Classroom icebreakers: Teachers and group leaders — this sheet works beautifully at the start of a class, club meeting, or activity session. It gets kids comfortable with each other before you ask them to collaborate.

Family game night: Add a silly question round between games as a palate cleanser. Works especially well with mixed-age groups.
