Weekly Wednesday Workout: Calf Raises

I generally don’t do calf exercises because my calves have never been a “problem area” for me, but as a part of the Jamie Eason program these are a part of leg day:

These are tough! Again, these can be done at home, on any stable surface like stairs.  In the program we aren’t holding on to anything we are actually supposed to have weights in both hands planted on the shoulders. The one legged calf raise is even harder and I can totally see my muscles popping in the mirror when I do it! (I wish I could the say the same thing when I do ab work!) Try this one , it will have you sore the next day for sure.

Have you ever tried calf raises?

One legged calf raises will make you want to die…but they are so helpful! I can honestly say that I do attempt calf raises throughout the day!-Ashley

I don’t work my calves specifically very often because running and all the other high impact stuff I do makes them big enough. I used to spend way more time doing calf raises – all types – toes in, toes out, single leg. Maybe I should add in some to try and strengthen my Achilles.

I have a weak Achilles on my left side, I didn’t even think about that benefit!

I woke the other night with the worst cramp in my calf muscles. It was excruciating. I was doing stretches in the middle of the night and I’ve done a few calf raises since then.

YIKES! was it a charley horse? I used to get those when I was preggo. The best cure is more potassium. It can be sore for days though.

I have huge calves…all of those years of gymnastics back in HS make these babies hard to fit into boots every winter. I try to avoid doing these.

Good idea, you know you need to be in some haute thigh highs this winter! 🙂

I like to do calf raises when I am brushing my teeth, cooking, etc… However, my calves are already gi-normous and cannot fit in skinny jeans so….. I don’t really need to be doing extra for them! 😉 I sometimes even feel like they are going to burst! WEIRD right?

It’s amazing how a simple exercise like the calf raise can kick your tail and leave you sore for days! But the reward is well worth the effort! Who doesn’t love a nice set of toned calves?

We did these yesterday in a sculpt class! Excpet we added them into a plie squat, all the way to calf raise, and I feel like we added something to our arms, but by this point, I cannot remember. Anyways, that workout was T-O-U-G-H and I felt validated in breaking out the VS swimsuit to take the kids to the pool that afternoon. #NoShame

If you wear heels a lot (guilty here), calf exercises are really important to help prevent shortening the muscle. On the video…I was with her until she wrapped her foot around the opposite ankle…ouch!

I totally don’t wear heels a lot LOL but that is a really good tip. I know that single leg is brutal!!
