Kindergarten has been an adjustment. We have successfully made it through the first quarter but it wasn’t easy.
Early Mornings/Late Nights
Getting up at 5:10am every morning has not been fun. I thought it would get easier with time but that hasn’t quite happened. It is so hard to get both adults out of bed first then somehow drag that log of a kindergartener out of bed to get ready. (The baby is always up and ready to go with a big smile on his face, safe to say that child is a morning person!). Between getting them ready, preparing their morning fruit, and getting them out the house by 6:20 then going to finish getting myself ready, things are quite hectic.
Like most moms, I was a bit anxious about how he would adjust to a new school, new schedule, new friends–new everything! I was especially concerned with the fact that he would. now be graded on 13 different subjects in school. Where would his strengths be? His weaknesses?
We have had no shortage of homework in the first quarter, it is non stop and although some nights it’s a struggle we get it done. I don’t remember getting that much homework in kindergarten but clearly we are in different times!
Last Thursday night I left work early to attend the Parent Teacher night. I was a bit nervous as he had gotten 2 notes home because he had been too chatty in class. Since I had to meet 8 different teachers I had no idea what to expect.
Thankfully all of the teachers love him and his report card was excellent, 3.87 GPA with excellent test scores. Which to be blatantly honest, I owe some of the credit to my mom and her husband who start homework with him after school while I’m at work.
Every teacher was so impressed with my son’s artistic skills. This didn’t come as a surprise to me as he is constantly drawing. It was really nice to hear from the teachers individually that they believed that he really had a special talent in art and creativity. One teacher said that he understands concepts in drawing that most kids don’t. I was just so proud especially because I don’t have an artsy bone in my body.
The common theme amongst all the teachers however is that he is chatty. He talks to everyone, he is super friendly with everyone except it’s at the wrong time. So now I have to work on getting him to focus more in school. Any ideas on this?
After 2.5 hours of waiting and chatting with teachers, I was very excited to walk out with the knowledge that I had a true budding artist on my hands and he is getting the concepts – – he just needs to not space out and stop being so social. On the other hand, I am SO happy he is on the Honor Roll and learning everything he needs to.
