What Would You Do? The Case Of The See Through Shorts

Summer is here and of course that means less and less clothing is being worn on the streets of NYC. Now I’m completely used to it, once the weather man says that the temp is over 50 degrees the entire city goes crazy shedding articles of clothing left and right-this is nothing new.

However, sometimes things go a bit too far, and to be honest I had no idea what to do in the situation.

It was one of the first 90 degree days in NYC. The miniskirts and short shorts (are they getting  shorter every year or am I getting more conservative as I get older?!) are in full effect by this time and there really isn’t much that surprises me when it comes to fashion.

On this particular train ride however, I saw one woman with white (short) shorts enter the train. The shorts fit perfectly and as she got closer I realized they were see through.

Now, again, that is perfectly fine except her choice of underwear happened to be bright pink and very I’ll fitting. When I noticed I immediately went to tell her and then before I opened my mouth I hesitated. Was she going to take offense? Did she want it that way? Did she pick that color to be fun?

Before long I noticed a lot of the women around me openly gawking at the woman who stood before us in the see through white pants and hot pink underwear. No one was saying anything yet folks were staring openly.

Personally it was a struggle for me not to say anything. I didn’t know how to approach it as I was sitting and she was standing. It was also rush hour…Would I ask her to bend down so I could whisper to her? Would I get up tap her and point? Would she get annoyed with me because she was fully aware of what’s happening in her pants?

She got off the train before I could even make make my mind up. So, I’m curious, what would you do? Before you make your decision keep in mind the following:

  • You are sitting on a very crowded train
  • Your husband is sitting next to you
  • She looks a bit rough
  • You would have to call attention to something she may have already wanted attention to be called to

What would you do? Would you have spoken to her? Buried your head in your book? Be honest!

  1. OMG! I would not have a done a thing because seriously, if she has on bright pink underwear, then most likely she knew exactly what she was doing, right? I mean, if it was light purple or yellow then possibly a mistake was made. Unfortunately (for you and everyone else) I think she’s trying to make a fashion statement. Yikes!

  2. It takes all kinds in NYC and trust me I think I saw and heard it all when I used to take the LIRR and Subway, too into Manhattan back in the day. I personally just would have kept my mouth shut and agree with Allie, I think she knew exactly what she was doing and could care less. Most of the times, I tried my best to keep to myself in moments such as these, but still I could see how you would not be able to look away, because after all very hard not to look away when train wrecks such as these are right in front of us.

  3. I wouldn’t have said a word because she’s a stranger and you never know. There’s a woman at work who tends to wear see through dresses in the summer. I mean, you can see EVERYTHING. After a few times and all of the talk going around about it I finally went to her boss and said something. I explained that I didn’t know her but if he was uncomfortable that I could tell or or he could get HR to do it. Never saw the offensive dresses again. Not sure why she didn’t just get a slip…the dresses were cut but totally see through.

  5. Yeah, she knew what she was doing. I wouldn’t have said anything, either. Pink underwear under white shorts would be something I wouldn’t lean towards even if they were a more “solid” white. 😉 I think she knew.

  6. This is a tough one, Nellie. Usually I would want to think I’d say something, but sometimes people get angry when they’re embarrassed and you’re stuck on that subway car with no escape if she got aggressive. I have to say the bright pink underwear probably means she did it on purpose. I think you were right to keep your mouth shut in this situation!

  7. NYers are nuts… so I am always a bit scared to say something. However, I had a woman ask if she could take some leaves out of my hair the other day when I was at an event, and I was SO happy she noticed. But underwear is a bit personal…I don’t think she knew, honestly. So many people make that mistake with whites.

  8. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have said anything! I get so embarrassed so easily and I would probably end up being more embarrassed than her!

  9. I normally don’t say things to people because I think everyone owns a mirror if she came out looking like that she probably has a few screws lose and those type of people I don’t bother.

  10. That’s a tough call, I don’t think I would have said anything. She could have wanted the attention but she could have simply not known. Of course this is me trying to see the best in everyone. But since you mentioned that she was kinda rough I don’t think I would have said anything at all.

  11. I probably wouldn’t have said anything either. If she planned that then it would make her mad and if somehow she didn’t check her butt out in the mirror before leaving her house then she would have been mortified – either way it probably wouldn’t have gone over well.

  12. She knew what she looked like before she left the house. This is just classic NYC madness we see. I personally wouldn’t say a thing. If you’re a lady you know, black underwear or nude. Simple. But I just mind my business, chances are I won’t see her again and her friends will tell her (maybe). I’m on the subway all the time in the city, its so entertaining.

  14. I think she probably knew, right? How can you not? Although sometimes I wear white and how it looks in one mirror isn’t necessarily how it looks in natural light.
That said, I’m totally non-confrontational and I would have just looked away..
(or taken a cell phone photo and made it go viral..just kidding)

  15. I have feeling she knew all along that it was see through. I probably wouldn’t have said anything to her but if I was with my husband we would have had a good laugh.

  16. You really never know in NYC if something is a mistake or a ‘fashion statement’. In all honesty, it would probably have been best to say something, but I’m pretty shy and would probably not have said a word. But let this be a PSA: white clothes = flesh toned undergarments!

  18. I definitely think she put the pink underwear on knowing they would show through. Some people like that kind of attention.

  19. I wouldn’t have said anything because odds are she probably knew.
We were at Outback a couple of months ago and this woman was there with her family she was pregnant and was wearing a long, black, fitted maxi dress. Well, it must have been made my Lululemon because it showing her “assets” and she, too, was wearing a hot pink thong. There is no way she didn’t know or her family didn’t notice. Maybe it’s a trend only these women know about. It was awful!

  20. Clearly she knew what she was doing…she had to. I don’t think I would have said anything! Liking the new layout!!

  21. I would have stared at her and then returned to my book. The reason is because whenever, I mean WHENEVER I wear white pants I know completely what underwear is going on, etc. She knew and she liked the look for whatever reason.
