Curly Q’s & Straight Talk Presented by Pantene + Essence Magazine

Last week I attended the Curly Qs and Straight Talk event hosted by Pantene & Essence Magazine. It was an event so that women could talk about their hair–What they  loved, what they hated and everything  in between.

Now you guys already know how I feel about my hair. Early in my blogging career I wrote a post on Naturalistas vs.  Weaveanistas. I am still as passionate about this topic today as I was back then. Whatever you choose to do is fine with me, I don’t believe in judgment by hairstyle.

There were some amazing hairstyles at this event mostly Naturalistas with a few installs and perms floating about. The room was full of beautiful intelligent chocolate women that not only knew how to bring it with the hairstyles, but also came dressed to impress! I took time to people watch because the style was so amazing  and the energy was fantastic.

One of the reasons why I was so excited for this event was that my friend Lia, who I met a few years ago at Fitbloggin (and she was my Blogalicious roomie too!) was going to be speaking on the panel!

Finally it was a little past 6pm and it was time for panel. There were some amazing speakers including Renae from In Her Shoes blog and more.

The actual panel was fantastic, there were some great tips shared about hair including :

  • Friends don’t give friends perms
  • Learn how to follow your gut when you are in a salon chair (if something feels wrong it probably is)
  • Moisture is key (oil is not moisture)
  • Always watch the tension on your scalp, cleaning scalp is always the most important thing you do
  • If you can’t wash your hair after a workout, leave some astringent in

Afterwards is when the real party got started! The lounge turned up the R&B and just like that it was time to network. I met some amazing ladies, I laughed with even more. My girl Kim and I took some crazy fun photos in the booth.

My girl Cass was there too and when you put me around these girls I am in my happy place. You can’t even imagine all of the happy that will happen at Fitbloggin 14! (9 weeks away omg!)

I had such a great time, this was a very well planned event, and I learned so much too!

What are your favorite hair tips?

  2. Looks like a blast with lots of amazing fashion! What a truly adult night out for you :-) I like to keep it simple when it comes to my hair which is why I just keep it short! The pool is the only thing that truly makes it nasty from all that chlorine so I make sure to soak it with water before I get in the pool so it doesn’t absorb as much of the chlorinated water!
FitBloggin is only 9 weeks away? YIKES!!!!

  4. What a cool event! I love the decor! My hair only does one thing and it is kind of hopeless so I don’t have a lot of great tips. The one thing I do though is make sure I get it trimmed often to avoid split ends!

  6. My only tip is the less you touch it, the better. I’m all about care-free, easy, and low manipulation. :)

  7. I’m not a good hair person – I’ve never been great with mine which is a big part of why I keep mine short.

  8. Oh, how fun!
My friend didn’t give me a perm but her mom did.. in 8th grade. It took YEARS to grow out. Never again!
Well you know me – all natural and flowing and messy.

  9. What fun! I love your hair. I want short hair but it just doesn’t look great on me. But I continue to try to pull it off. My poor hairstylist. Every time I say to her, “well it will grow back.” Right now it’s longer again and it does look better. Maybe I am searching for something that just doesn’t exist.

  10. I don’t know that I have a favorite hair tip. I love the one you gave about moisture though. When I was growing up it was all about the oil!
