FAQs
Can I use mini marshmallows instead of jumbo? You totally can! Mini marshmallows won’t give you the same big, ghostly effect, but they’ll still taste amazing. You could also try piling a few together to form a “mini ghost army.”
Can I use other types of chocolate chips? Absolutely! Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or even spooky-colored chocolate chips would add an extra flair to these cookies. The more chocolate, the better!
Do I have to use white chocolate for the ghost design? Nope! If you’re not a fan of white chocolate, you can use regular icing or even a vegan white chocolate alternative. Whatever gives you those spooky vibes!
Can I freeze these cookies? Yes! Freeze them before adding the marshmallow topping for the best results. When you’re ready to eat, just add the marshmallows and chocolate decorations before serving.
Fun Places to Serve These Cookies
Halloween Parties: Obviously, these cookies will steal the show at any Halloween bash!
School Events: Send your kids off with these spooky treats for a class party or bake sale. They’ll be the star of snack time.
Spooky Movie Night: Bake these while watching your favorite Halloween movies. Think Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, or Beetlejuice.
Trick-or-Treat Pre-game: Serve these up before the trick-or-treating adventure begins. Get the kids (and yourself) in the spooky spirit!
Office Treats: If you want to be the cool coworker, bring these to the office for a fun Halloween treat.
How to Store Leftovers
If, by some miracle, you have leftover cookies (which is rare, trust me), store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. To keep them chewy and soft, you can add a slice of bread in the container. The bread will absorb the moisture, keeping your cookies from getting too dry.
If you want to store them for longer, freeze the baked cookies without the marshmallow ghosts. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, simply thaw and add the marshmallow ghosts as if they were freshly baked!
Tips for Making This Recipe with Kids
Let them decorate the ghosts: Kids will love drawing spooky faces on the marshmallows with the melted chocolate. Let their creativity run wild!
Hands-on mixing: Mixing the cookie dough is always a fun part for little ones. They’ll feel like they’re creating magic when they blend the butter, sugar, and flour.
Ghost assembly line: If you’re baking with more than one kid, create an assembly line for decorating the cookies. One can melt the chocolate, another can place the marshmallows, and the last one can do the spooky faces!
Storytime baking: While the cookies bake, make up ghost stories or talk about your favorite Halloween memories. It’ll make the kitchen feel even more festive!
A Fun Personal Story
I remember the first time I made these ghost cookies with my kids—they got way more excited than I anticipated! We had the whole spooky setup: Halloween music playing, orange and black streamers, and even fake spider webs everywhere.
My youngest thought the marshmallows were actual mini ghosts and kept trying to “catch” them before they went into the oven. It was pure chaos, but in the best way. The kitchen was a mess, chocolate was everywhere, and flour seemed to get places I didn’t even know existed—but seeing their little ghost faces come to life on the cookies made it all worth it.
By the end, we had more chocolate on our faces than on the cookies, but that’s the beauty of baking with kids, right?
Why This Recipe Works
This recipe is a guaranteed hit because it combines the classic crowd-pleaser—chocolate chip cookies—with a spooky Halloween twist. The cookie base is soft, chewy, and packed with chocolate chips, which is a must for any good cookie.
The marshmallow topping adds a fun, gooey element that kids (and adults) will love, and the white chocolate and dark chocolate decorations bring the ghostly theme to life. It’s the perfect balance of creativity and deliciousness, plus it’s simple enough for anyone to pull off!
You don’t need any fancy equipment, and it’s flexible enough to customize. Want your ghosts to be extra scary? Add some red food coloring to the chocolate for “bloodshot” eyes. Craving even more chocolate? Throw in some chocolate chunks along with the chips. These cookies are fail-proof, kid-friendly, and seriously fun to make!

Instructions
- In a large bowl, add the melted butter, brown sugar and white granulated sugar. Whisk together until combined.
- Then add in the eggs and vanilla extract. Whisk again until smooth.
- Now, add in the flour, baking soda and salt. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet until incorporated.
- Lastly, pour in the chocolate chips and fold into the batter until evenly distributed.
- Cover this dough or transfer to plastic wrap to cover and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to chill.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Scoop about 2 inch round balls of dough and place on the baking sheet about 2 inches apart from each other.
- Bake in the oven for 13 minutes or unti the edges are golden brown and the center is slightly undone.
- Remove from the oven and let the cookies finish baking while they set.
- Meanwhile, melt the white chocolate in a bowl in the microwave. Heat for 30 second intervals, stirring in between until melted and smooth.
- Once the cookies have slightly cooled, take a spoon and place a dollop of white chocolate in the middle of each cookie.
- Let the white chocolate drip slightly from the middle of the cookie, creating a wavy shape of a ghost of melted snowman.
- Completely dip a jumbo marshmallow in the white chocolate, coating completely and then place in the center of the white chocolate on the cookie.
- Repeat with the rest of the marshmallows and top each cookie with it.
- Let the white chocolate harden on the cookie and marshmallow.
- While that hardens, heat the dark chocolate in the microwave at 30 second intervals until melted and smooth, stirring in between.
- Transfer to a piping bag and snip the end to make a small hole.
- Create 2 black eyes and a ghost like O mouth on the side of each chocolate covered jumbo marshmallow to finish these ghost chocolate chip cookies.
