Speed Workouts For Runners
When I got into running seriously, a mere two years ago, I remember running as fast as I could and realizing that I will never win a race. I am okay with this but with everything in life there is room for improvement.
I really haven’t worked on my speed much this year even though I know I need the work in order to simply get better at running. My competitive side simply does not activate when it comes to running, since it’s more therapeutic than a sport for me. However, it would be nice to get a bit faster and spend less time on my feet when I train.
Lately as I brave the summer heat indoors on the treadmill for marathon training, I have been getting more comfortable with pushing the speed up for short intervals of time. I put on one of my favorite workout songs and go for it! Check out my workout below which can be done outside or on a treadmill:

I have a love/hate relationship with speed work, for obvious reasons, but it truly makes you stronger in every way! I love this week’s theme and, you will want to check Tina’s post today about why you should include speed work if you’re training for a fall marathon 🙂
As you know not a runner here, but will definitely share with my friends, who are and thanks for compiling these workouts for those who are runners, Nellie 🙂
I totally understand what you mean about pushing the pace on the treadmill – I tend to do that a lot more than when I’m outside running.
Saving this….I have been working on treadmill intervals lately and can’t wait to try these out.
I am a huge fan of speed work during marathon training, especially in those earlier weeks when the long runs aren’t too crazy and exhausting yet. I hope your marathon training continues to go well – and that you get a break from that summer heat soon!

I’ve been thinking of you marathon training – such a brutal start to it with this heat. I promise it will make you better and stronger come November. And speed intervals are a must for me on the treadmill to keep it interesting. You need to try fartleks to your favorite playlist, too, it’s a lot of fun.
Thank you for the encouragement!! Yes, the treadmill is getting more boring by the day.For my long run tomorrow i’m bringing my tablet to watch some netflix lol
Great round-up of workouts! I used to be the same way, not feeling so competitive and finding it more therapeutic. But when I joined a marathon clinic, it’s hard not to be inspired to push harder (and be a little more competitive with both myself and others) when we’re going through those hard workouts together. Right now we’ve been doing some killer hill repeats weekly, but soon we’ll be hitting the track!
I’m just looking forward to school starting so I can work on working out regularly at all! But I’ll definitely share this with the husband, who is in full-half training mode right now!
