What are the Benefits of Homemade Baby Food?

Believe it or not in a few days I am going to have a 5 month old! As we start looking into starting solids, I did my research to see if what are truly the benefits of homemade baby food for baby? I made all of the food from scratch for my first born, but with my second born he got the pre-made baby food in jars.

When that time of parenthood arrives where baby is ready for solids you may be wondering about the right options to feed your baby solid foods. Many parents are starting to make homemade food for baby so that they know what’s going into that little tummy. If you’re nearing that solid food stage with your baby and wondering what the benefits of homemade food for baby are, then you’ve come to the right place. Today I’ll be sharing the top benefits of making ho baby food to feed your little one when the time comes to try solids with this little child of yours.

The Top 4 Benefits of Homemade Baby Food

1) Contains more Nutrients

If you grab a jar of baby food off the shelf at a local grocery store you’re going to find that the label shares some concerning ingredients. There will be a lot of added sugars and other unnecessary ingredients in jarred baby food that you find at the grocery store. These ingredients have been known to cause health issues and obesity in our youth. Homemade food for baby has more valuable nutrients and less if any, unhealthy additives that are often found in jarred baby food.

2) Better Flavor and Texture

Store bought baby food isn’t created with flavor or texture in mind.  When you make homemade food for baby you’re able to share the experience of good flavor with baby and puree your baby’s food into a texture that’s more pleasurable for their palette. This increases the likelihood that baby will try and enjoy new foods as they venture into the big world of eating solids.

3) Encourages Healthy Eating Habits

Most of the jarred baby foods on the shelf at your local grocery store will have added sugars that are unnecessary to your little one’s diet. These added sugars have become part of the problem with adults being addicted to sugar and having a difficult time with health issues. Making homemade food for baby cuts out the refined sugars and allows baby to enjoy healthier, all-natural sugar flavor that comes from the fruits and vegetables used to make homemade food. This helps encourage healthy eating habits.

4) Easier Transitions

When you opt to feed your baby homemade food from day one of solids, you’ll find that they transition easier to table foods when the time comes. Your baby will already have grown accustomed to the flavors of real food and only have to adjust to texture as they transition from pureed style homemade food to tabletop food that isn’t pureed or strained to a specific texture. Easier transitions are a blessing when it comes to parenting a child who’s ready for table foods because your child will already be used to healthy food options and have a more adaptable palette for table foods.

Opting to make homemade food for baby is one of the most important decisions to make when it comes to parenting. This is a great way to encourage healthy eating habits, reduce sugar addiction and minimize the number of unnecessary additives that could go into your baby’s tummy when you opt to feed the store-bought baby food.

I totally plan on making homemade baby food once my little one arrives! With my nephews, I’ve been disturbed to see some of the ingredient lists on their formulas and baby foods.. I think the important thing is that if you buy baby food – which I’m sure I will do here and there when I’m short on time – you make sure that the ingredients are wholesome and not some foreign words with a ton of additives. After all, you’re setting your baby up for their diet and food preferences for the rest of their lives right?!

I bought that baby food for my son but I did do some things on my own with my daughter and it was a huge difference.

The benefits of homemade baby food are so many. And way better than the ones we pick up off the shelves.
