You all know how much I love trying out new fitness classes in NYC. It is seriously one of the easiest places to get fit (read: amazing boutique and free exercise classes) and one of the easiest places to be unhealthy (read: cronuts)! So when I got the opportunity to check out Sylwia Weisenberg’s Tonique class I was so excited because she had gotten such great reviews from so many well known magazines!
When I arrived I really didn’t know what to expect, it was early Thursday morning yet the place was pretty full. What I didn’t know was that Complete Body is a full gym, once you go downstairs you will enter a underground playground for buff people. I’m not kidding. Every single person in there was jacked. I was so intimidated because clearly I was in the wrong place! There were cross fitters and folks lifting all kinds of crazy weights with 0% body fat…I was in a state of awe.
Thankfully when I met the organizers of the the event I felt wanted and welcomed. Then Slywia herself came in and was surrounded by a cloud of good energy. From the moment we met she was all smiles and full of goodness. She is a girl’s girl, the kind that is drop dead gorgeous with a body that rivals the BEST yet completely humble and sweet.
Slywia currently has 10 DVDs that include workouts that span from 30 minutes to 3 hours!! She has hundreds of moves and techniques that gives the body an extreme workout without looking extreme. I would say the workout is total body meets, insane pilates, meets hatha yoga. It is a workout that you never stop moving in, you do countless reps working the same muscle in many many different ways. We did lots of traditional moves in nontraditional ways, for example we were doing a lot of lunges that crossed behind and across our bodies–all while listening to the best playlist of heart pumping music I’ve heard in a while.
I was pouring sweat within minutes. This workout was SO out of my comfort zone so I often had to stop and drink water. It became so mental for me at one point I really just had to suck it up and try. My flexibility sucks and boy was it put to the test!! The great part was that Slywia was extremely understanding and she even came by to modify some moves for me. I appreciate that quality in an instructor because sometimes you just want to give up and a little help/push is all you need.
After the class kicked my tail all over the studio (It was brutal y’all but in a really good way). I got a chance to speak with Slywia briefly and I learned so much about her. First she is all about girl power and I LOVE that! She actually taught the Tonique method for 4 years for free before launching her DVDs and career. She has two kids and she felt insecure about her body after her second child so she created a movement that helps women feel stronger inside and out.
She loves running and has this amazing competitive spirit. She also is an avid juicer, she was sweet enough to juice two complete drinks for us that were delicious! The best thing that I learned about her? She is going to be featured on the cover of SHAPE Magazine in Poland in August. How cool is that?!
Slywia currently teaches a daily two hour version of the intense class I took at Complete BodySpa in Flatiron, NY. I would so go back to her class because as hard as it was, it was completely different from my usual routine, it worked so many muscles and we all know that the body needs a shake up once in a while…so consider me shook. 🙂
