Fitbloggin 2013: The Brooklyn Girl Loves Portland Part Deux

fitbloggin recap 2013 portland

On day two I was able to sleep in until almost 8 am (11am eastern!!!) I was so excited, but I was almost late for jumpsport! They brought in 60 or so trampolines for us to use for class.

I am not sure what I was expecting but within 10 minutes I realized that it was actually a bootcamp class masquerading as a jumpsport class! It was so TOUGH! We were planking on the trampolines and when we weren’t on them we were doing tons of jumping jacks, squats, burpees, and various kicks. I was stunned. The instructor was fabulous however and he kept us going.

Crossfit First Timer!

Next I ate a very quick but still insanely yummy breakfast and headed off for crossfit. I was terrified because although my knee hadn’t been an issue all weekend, from what I’ve seen about crossfit, it can be pretty intense.

We did a set of squats, situps and pushups. It was tough but good. I can see how people get addicted to it, it was fun, intense and the coaches were so incredibly encouraging. I just need the prices to come down a bit in NYC!

We had a long break between crossfit and the next session which encouraged us to go explore Portland. We took some of this time to explore the sponsors.

FitBloggin Sponsor Love

We tried out the total gym which was completely amazing and a lot harder than it looks. I am hoping the workout fairies will drop one of those in my lap one day…not literally but you guys know what I mean :)

I also managed to visit the rest of the sponsors including Laughing Cow, Reebok, Enell, NatureMade, Sworkit, ShareAsale, Amana and more!

After that, we decided to eat lunch inside on our very swanky hotel and talk business. The food from The Nines was really good as we ate from the brunch menu.

After that it was time for more sessions! We went to design your own media kit and this one was my second most favorite session of the conference If you don’t have one, get one! Heck, you can even buy one for 5 dollars on Fiverr. Just always have one. You never know when sponsors may request it! Media kits are super important if you plan on working with brands. I personally don’t have one but now I have the basic framework of how to make one.

After that we had a break, and of course more snacks!

A Special Moment

Before the conference there was a post on the Fitbloggin website that told us of a special contest. If you found one of five golden cowbells you could actually be invited to Google Hangout with the one and only Dolvett Quince. I have mentioned in passing before how much I adore this man, but what y’all don’t know is that I stalk his instagram and twitter and I just want to–uh–be his friend.

So on the second day when my roomie Kim found a cowbell I was more than happy to celebrate with her, and stifle my inner devastation that I was so close to finding one and didn’t! The editor of DietsInReview reminded me that I should enter the twitter contest because I was stalking and begging her for a hint and I did. Then I got this tweet:

I nearly fell OUT MY CHAIR. I was literally so excited and when Brandi gave me the cowbell in person I gave her a hug like no other. I was just TOO happy!

My favorite session of the conference

You guys know that I’ve been so into my camera since I got it for my birthday. I’ve take my friend Lashawn’s advice and basically forced myself to learn in manual. It has been painful at times but finally I am starting to understand how this baby ticks.

I was itching to go to the photography session because I really have not had any hands on photography lessons, just what I’ve seen on the web. Since I am a better learner in person this session was exactly what I needed.

Amanda from GrowSoulBeautiful taught us about the basics of photography but when she started talking about the “nerdy” parts of photography I was so zoned in! I was even more excited that I understood everything she said about ISO, and all the other technical aspects of photography. She inspired me to grab my camera and take pictures of everything in Portland. I realize now that I need to really take my hobby seriously by taking local classes etc. (As if I don’t have enough to do :))

New Bonds Formed

After that, I gathered with my beautiful fellow brown fitness bloggers at the conference including Pilar, Renesha, Valerie and Kim. We were able to have a really fun and amazing conversation over dinner and just like that a bond was formed.

We had a really great time that evening dancing and bonding with our new fitbloggin family, and trust me when I say these fitbloggin folks can GET DOWN! The DJ was incredible and we never left the dance floor. It was the perfect end to an amazing conference.

Stay tuned for Part 3 including a 5k recap, spa treatment, the movies, and more food trucks :) (you have stuck with me this far in the adventure, you know you want to know how it ends!)

  2. I would be just like a child on the trampoline looking things I would jump off and then jump on and then try to do some type of back flip…..Looks like everyone had a great time and the food looks delicious. Yes you do need a media kit I am working on a pitch letter now so I can start sending out one to companies I want to work with.

  3. Oh, Nellie, you’ve done it again! I’ve had a fantastic time reading about your fantastic time! CONGRATS on winning your cowbell. See all of you stalking paid off!ha
The food at the conference looked delicious. Way to go on trying Crossfit. My husband wants me to try it. I think it may still be a bit out of my comfort zone.

    • ha thank you, sad to say I think I have a PHD in stalking. SMH. Crossfit WILL push you out of your comfort zone but they are SO supportive, thats what I love about it.

  4. great recap Nellie! I’ll be ‘seeing’ you in the G+ hangout with Dolvett – I won a golden cowbell too! I can’t wait! I felt much the same way as you did about the Crossfit – it was a great intro to it – now maybe I won’t be quite so intimidated by the idea of heading to a local gym to give it another go!

  5. I’ve really wanted to try Crossfit as well but the times don’t match my schedule. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I saw people tweeting about the trampoline class and I admit, I wondered how challenging that could be. Yours is the 2nd or 3rd recap I’ve read that disproved my assumptions. Can’t wait to hear the rest.

  7. Woohoo to shooting in manual and understanding some of the “nerdspeak.” It’s totally nerdy. And I’m glad you always get into photos. I’m so bad at that. My sister does crossfit and she is totally addicted. She’s been doing it awhile and I agree – they support each other incredibly. They call themselves the crossfit family where she does it in Jersey!
