Friday Fitness Check In: Adios Holidays, Bring On The New Year!

Welcome to the Friday Fitness Check In! I am using this as a bit of a fitness diary to keep my goals in check while sharing exactly what I am doing with you on a weekly basis. :) Feel free to link up and/or do your own Friday Fitness Check In in the comments!

Welcome to the first Friday Fitness Check In of the year!!

Despite the impending snowstorm, I will manage to get my 5 workouts in for the week. I have been doing a lot of circuit trainings trying to keep the body guessing. I know I have been working hard because I have been SUPER sore this week! I even met a friend on New Years Day for a nice 90 minute workout which includes multiple machines and (gulp) squat jumps–which I have since concluded is *not* my favorite exercise. I am happy to say that I completed 30 of them, and after 10 I SO thought I was done! Here is an example of my Monday workout:

If anyone is ridiculously happy that the Holiday Eating Season is over–its me!! As of New Years Day all of the holiday sweets/eats/yummies are OVER and GOOD RIDDANCE! I managed to somehow stay within my calories and I stayed entering every little bit on My Fitness Pal (Even when I didn’t want to! hello extra helping of rice and peas). This holiday season was definitely tougher than expected–the sugar monster came knocking a lot and I am so happy she is GONE!

I think the only thing that saved me was that I worked throughout the entire holiday (including Christmas Eve and New Years Eve) so I was still pretty regimented to my every day diet. When I am at home for days on end, the food choices get a little crazy!

We are surrounded by motivation these days aren’t we? Every news broadcast has plenty of weight loss recipes, workouts etc. It is the busiest time fr fitness professionals across the board. I love it for the new boost of motivation and I plan to use it until this all simmers down in about a month or two.

Other than that, I have been getting compliments from my family members and if you know my family, getting a compliment from them is like pulling teeth! So when my mom said I was “slimming nicely” I took a second and enjoyed that moment for what it was worth (exactly millions of dollars). I also took a total body class over the holiday that I hadn’t took in a year, it was easier to manage this time around so that showed that I was making gains in my endurance and that is a constant goal of mine.

Also, when I workout, my motivation is that there is only 3 months (90 days) until the big coat goes into storage! In March it starts to get decent weather wise so I keep that in the forefront of my mind when working out!

I didn’t lose the pound I wanted to by the end of the year but I did lost 0.4 pounds which I will take! The scale has been pretty steady for the past week or so, and as long as I am not gaining, I am winning. :)

It’s time for you to check IN!

Are you affected by all of this January Fitness Crazy??

How are your food/fitness goals coming along this week?

  1. You are totally winning and hope you are doing Ok in the snow today. We have at least a foot here if not more and even my husband’s office is closed (which they hardly ever do). Stay war, safe and huge congrats on the weight lose. So proud of you!! :)

  2. Good for you! I am psyched that the sugar monster is gone. I’m usually not THAT much into sweets but I was surrounded by dark chocolate this season and it’s just too good to pass up. I love that your mom gave you a million dollar compliment!! You so deserve it and it goes a LONG way. Love the workout and squat jumps are very effective but not helpful when trying to go to the bathroom the next day – OUCH!!
    Here’s to a slimmer you in 2014 :-)

  3. Woop woop for a loss during the holidays! Any loss is better than a gain!…

I never thought about the 90 day countdown either. That’s such a great way to stay motivated besides dreading swimsuit season. :)

  4. I didn’t gain a thing in one month so good for not gaining. I also didn’t lose anything which sucks too. I had a dream about being on one of those bikes and it was like a virtual bike where I had to watch out for animals in stuff….weird dream.

  5. Sigh. From Thanksgiving to New Years was a big fat FAIL. LOL. I gained 5 pounds. *hangs head in shame* I couldn’t compete against my mama’s red velvet cake and that damn ham and mac and cheese.
BUT! I will get back on track soon! I ordered a fit bit today and plan on going to look for a treadmill for the house this weekend. Because since the excuse is I don’t have the time to make it to the gym, i will bring the gym to me!!!

You’ve even killing Friday fitness!! Here’s to another awesome year my friend!!

  7. I would say any loss in December is a huge success!!!
Squat jumps are always brutal – something about staying in that position and adding in the cardio is killer – it’s why we “love” them!!!
I don’t think I do anything different in January as far as workouts go other than start a fresh new fitness journal which is always fun!!

  8. Didn’t lose anything during the break at all!! I need to stop baking for these people!! Good news, is that I burned calories from shoveling :-)

  9. Oh, I can so relate to days at home and not eating right. And don’t get me started on my mom’s house…it’s like I’m five again! I’ve been getting my workouts in but not as planned (i.e, days off have been switched). I also worked through most of it until the last two days when my uncle came to town so I took the rest of the week off. I think a .4 weight loss this time of year is fab!

  10. Not gaining is winning – right on! I’ve been winning for awhile..
I’m doing the 30 Day Planking Challenge, which I’m so excited about. It’s still so easy that I’m a bit smug, but I’m sure it will get very hard. The last of our house guests cleared out today, and with them, most of the food was eaten too. The junk food. So that was good! My treat these days is organic popcorn popped on the stove with some real (grass-fed) butter.
    Oh, yes.

  11. You did great Nellie! Jump squats are so hard, that you did 30 is amazing. You’re truly an inspiration! I must admit that the January fitness craze drives me a little nuts. I wish that more recipes and ideas were available throughout the year, because I get so bored of the same thing every January.

  12. I’m definitely going to pin this so people can see your 45 minute workout idea! I saw this one quote on Pinterest that said something about letting your motivation be that you want people to ask you if you have lost weight. Made me think of that when your mom said you had slimmed down. That is so awesome, Nellie! Keep up the great work! :)

  14. What an awesome plan! I totally want to tighten my abs up even more after having my son in October. I’ve lost all the pregnancy weight, but I’m used to being lean, tight, and firm. I’m getting back there, but could definitely use a legitimate plan to do so!

  15. I think I’m like your family. It’s not that I don’t want to be supportive, I just am not very observant. People are usually 5-6 months pregnant before I notice and they can loose 30 pounds and I don’t see it until they tell me. Then I’m like duh, you sure have. I don’t know why I don’t “see” ppl but I don’t. Anywho, I’m glad you are accomplishing your goals & the family is noticing. That usually tugs at the heart to get compliments from the ones you love.

  16. I don’t own a scale, but my clothes fit, so I think I am good! I did not work out today yet…I am still in my pjs. But I told my husband I would run with him after he gets done skiing. My husband does notice when I drop a few pounds, but I don’t…isn’t that funny?!
