Last Saturday I went to the ATM to retrieve money for my hair salon appointment. When I went to check my account online before I made the withdrawal, I noticed something was wrong…
Since I had gotten paid that day I knew the specific number I expected to see–it was a whole $100+ off–wth??
I quickly backtracked to any purchases me or my husband could have made–but there were none, we had been in the house pretty much since Christmas.
When I checked my account I was shocked to see at least 8 iTunes transactions, and since I am the only Apple user in the home, I knew immediately I had been robbed.
I called Bank Of America as quick as my fingers would let me and they let me know that since the purchases hasn’t posted (yet the money was gone from the account) they couldn’t do anything. They did reassure me that I would get my $ back — after letting me know that the thieves still had access to take what they pleased.
Say what now?
Thank goodness I have a very separate mortgage savings account so I moved ALL remaining funds to that account that is safe from crooks.
Let me step back for a second. Now BOFA DID call me several weeks back saying that my card was compromised by a third party vendor and I would be getting a new card at the beginning of the year…I didn’t think anything of the compromised card I was just a bit annoyed that I had to change all of my direct billing services(
and memorize a new card number).
I had no idea I had REALLY been hijacked! I was a victim of Identity Theft.
In total about $140 was taken from my checking account in 11 separate iTunes transactions. Unbelievable.
Worse part? The robbers came after me AGAIN on 1/3 when hubby got paid (and I thought the whole ordeal was over)!
Another $40 in iTunes purchases.
BOFA has returned all of my money since, and yes the card is finally shut down.
The moral of the story: CHECK YOUR ACCOUNTS! STAY VIGILANT! These purchases were very small ranging from $1.00 to $11.99. It was done in the wee hours of the morning, and trust me if I wasn’t going out to do my hair I wouldn’t have been none the wiser and they would have gotten it ALL.
Have you ever had your identity stolen?
