FlyWheel Sports: Not Your Ordinary Spin Class!

FlyWheel Sports

In an effort to mark something else off  my Fitness bucket list for 2014, I decided one day to attend a FlyWheel class, I had heard so many great things from other bloggers and I know people who are full on obsessed with these classes! I really wanted to see how these classes were compared to my regular spin classes that I take weekly. It couldn’t be that bad…right?

The registration online was painless. I filled out all of my info in the morning, picked a lunchtime class, gave them my shoe size and went on with the rest of my work day until it was time for class.

I had to take the train downtown two stops and unfortunately underestimated how long I would take to get there because by the time I arrived I had exactly four minutes to undress, grab my shoes, and get set up on my bike. Ooops.

During my hurry to get ready I noticed all of the amazing amenities…ponytail holders and hairclips everywhere I turned, deodorant (spray), hair spray, free bottled water and more. I put all of my things into a locker that required no physical lock just a code you have to remember. This is brilliant right? Except I put my code in and forgot to take the locker number down. Second oops. It took me 15 minutes and several wrong locker attempts to actually find my locker when I was done! lol!

The spin shoes were a bit weird for me, I have been spinning for 7 years but I have never invested the money to purchase spin shoes. So these were a bit weird…and although I was late and it was dark in the room, one of the FlyWheel employees set me up on the  bike that I picked during registration quickly and easily. I felt weird on the setup but eventually I got into the groove of the class.

The music was SO GOOD. I am a huge pop music fan so I loved every second. I was drenched in sweat within a few minutes. This is NOT an ordinary spin class folks!

So as a part of the class you can choose whether or not you want your stats displayed on the screen for everyone to see. Of course I put my stats up! A) I am a stats person and B) I wanted to see how I would do against the regulars. Although I started 6 minutes late I held my own with the rest of the class, I came in last place but I also noticed other riders that chose not to show their stats and went at their own pace. Despite coming in last I will always continue to put my stats up to see if I could beat my last score!

So the one part that  I was NOT prepared to deal with was the weights. In the front of each bike are two 4 pound bar weights. Towards the end of the ride the instructor yelled told us to take them out. She had us doing bicep curls, tricep curls, slow lifts–everything while still spinning on the bike. Tough is not even the word! Every single muscle in my upper body was burning!

When it was all said and done, I felt like I could pretty much do anything. My legs and arms felt like jelly but my spirits were boosted, it is the PERFECT cardio workout. I promised to treat myself to one session per month (Hello its $34 PER CLASS!) and I can’t wait until I take my next one!

Have you ever taken a boutique spin class? What kind of amenities would you love to see at your gym?

  1. Wow! That’s pretty cool! At $34 per class I guess it better be. LOL! I have never done one. I don’t even think they have those here yet. When we had our substitute spin instructor, she had us do weights at the end too. I thought it was a great addition to traditional spin.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I’m hoping I can take a few classes like this when I come into the city for the Healthy U conference. I’ll have to check the weekend schedules – they’re probably packed!!

  9. I love Flywheel so much! There is usually a whiteboard where you can write down your locker number and your initials so you don’t forget. That might help you next time! :) Also, you can opt out of the weights and keep spinning if you prefer to not do the weight section–a lot of people do this in the classes I have been in. I sometimes do this if I have lifted the day before. My favorite part about Flywheel is the numbers and the torqboard because I love seeing numerical progress and “competing” with my classmates!

  12. $34?! That’s more than my monthly gym membership! Though that class does sound like fun. I love the idea of including the weight bars…but then again I’m not very coordinated and would just be likely to fall off my bike. (No, seriously, I would fall off…..)
