The ONE THING January Challenge!

Happy 2018!

We all know how crazy it can get during January–the weight loss commercials, the diet commercials, the gym commercials, the exercise equipment commercials, the commercials that are about some kids of weight loss show…it’s never ending. It’s so easy to get caught up in all of it because the “healthy” marketing tsunami is everywhere you turn.

I have a different approach this January. In Brooklyn Active Mama’s Healthy Living Facebook Community Women Prioritizing Fitness, we are taking on ONE thing. For example, my ONE thing is to become super consistent with my running as I gear up for a heavy-ish running year. 2017 I ran a lot of races, but was a bit more inconsistent with my running than I would have liked. In January I really would like to run 3 times a week minimum as I begin to train for the 2018 NYC Half. ONE Thing.

Here are some ideas on what your one thing could be:

  • Drink more water daily
  • Eat more Greens and Vegetables daily
  • Go to the gym 5 times a week
  • Cook more healthy meals instead of ordering out
  • Run more miles
  • Do more bodyweight exercises
  • Get at least 8 hours sleep
  • Schedule more self care such as (manicures, pedicures, massages, therapy etc)
  • Reduce your sugar intake
  • Less screen time
  • …and so much more!

Focusing on one thing takes away all of the drama and overwhelm that comes every single January. I’ve been consistently working out for years and the marketing of everything becomes way too much–even for ME! Of course you can choose more than one thing but building on doing one thing successfully is a recipe for success!

What a great challenge and to be honest not sure what my one thing would be, but think it would have to do with getting a bit more in shape as I know I let some of that go at the end of last year with the holidays and all the yummy foods I was consuming. So, there is that for sure. But just wanted to stop in and wish you a very, Happy New Year now Nellie!! <3

Ooh! I like this idea. I’ve actually decided to break my challenges up by 100 days. So for the first 100 days of the year until April 10th, I plan to do certain things everyday. I want to say that I’ll drink 8 glasses of water everyday but I’m not sure if I can drink 8 glasses of anything everyday. So I think instead I’ll just drink more water daily.

I was doing this last year doing one thing a month so it sticks and it’s not so overwhelming. I loved it last year and will do the same this year

I love this idea. While I do have a few different goals for 2018, I think the “one thing” I can and should really focus on is meal planning/prepping. I know this will help me with my nutrition goals.

ooh.. I love this. I think of so many prompts myself and from yours. For me, drinking more water and reducing sugar intake. Or being consistent with exercise. So many ideas! And finding better work balance. I like this even better than one word!

Great ideas, Nellie! One thing at a time is a good way to accomplish all other things. I’m already starting with healthy eating to shed extra pounds from the holidays. A little of everything so as to not feel overwhelmed with the new changes.
