As I get older, the need to travel and see the world in its entirety has been growing larger and larger in my heart. It’s crazy because up until last year I had so many excuses: I’d wait until the kids turn 18, or when my bank account was stable, or when I paid off my student loans.
I love traveling with my kids but sometimes taking them out of school is not an option. As much as I love my children I adore traveling solo* and I take the chance to do so whenever I can! A really fun way to see the world is to go via SEA! I was invited to a really fun event in Brooklyn thrown by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and I’m convinced that my next major vacation needs to be a cruise!
I invited my best friend to join me at the Brooklyn Naval Yard event space that had been converted into an incredible on land demonstration of all the fun that can happen while you are at sea with Royal Caribbean. We immediately downloaded the app and ordered drinks. The waiters found us by our selfies and served us–it was downright awesome. The app is pretty amazing, you can even plan out your full schedule, plan spa appointments, checkout the event calendar, purchase excursions and so much more from the palm of your hand.
We were brought into different parts of the “ship” so we could get a behind the scenes preview of the coolest parts of the ship. We saw what the captain sees including how they keep track of any unforeseen weather or traffic in the distance.
There are even parts of the ship that you can use your app to “see through”. Don’t worry–you won’t be able to see through someone’s cabin!! #voyeur
Stateroom of the future
Finally we checked out the stateroom of the future which was one of the coolest innovations I’ve ever seen. For my 16th birthday (and high school graduation) my aunt took me, my cousin and my Grandma on a cruise. The actual cruise was AMAZING but we stayed in an indoor cabin. We managed but it was smalllll. The stateroom of the future actually brings the outside to you. You can “see” the water underneath your feet. You can rise with the sun or even look up and see the many, many stars in (smog free) the night sky. Check out the I made while we were previewing the room–you will be blown away!
At Sea Beyond, guests will see how the company is experimenting with immersive displays for walls, ceilings and floors. What are the possibilities if the fundamental structural elements of your stateroom are themselves high resolution displays? Want to fall to sleep under the starry sky of the part of the world you are cruising through tonight? Want to wake surrounded by the sights and sounds of tomorrow’s port of call? Want to relax in an environment evocative of your favorite shore excursion? The stateroom of the future imagines your cabin’s ceiling, walls and floor as canvases you can control with the same ease as your stateroom’s lighting and temperature.
Virtual Dining Experience
Finally we were treated to a virtual dining experience. What is that you ask? It is where you put on a pair of virtual reality goggles and you taste food that you have NO IDEA WHAT IT IS. If you know me at all–you know this was a super adventurous experience for me! I made sure I told every single person around me (LOUDLY) that I had a seafood allergy, then I said a little prayer. When you had the goggles on you could only see food in front of you that was flaming–you had no idea if it was an entree sample or a dessert sample!
I managed to make it out alive, without anaphylactic shock, and it was such a cool experience! (Turns out I ate eggplant while everyone else ate tuna!!) 🙂
The entire experience convinced me that I need to get on a Royal Caribbean Cruise in the very near future!!
