Three ways to make sure you get your protein when training for a race
I am knee deep in week 7 of marathon training and I have been trying my best not to make the mistakes I made last year. One of those mistakes was eating way too much. My runner friends have advised me to up my protein intake so that the “run-ger” doesn’t show up and take me hostage. I’ve been really good about controlling it so far but it is only going to become more challenging as the miles start to increase exponentially in the next few months.
It was as if Pure Protein read my mind! They have a new line of delicious protein bars that just hit the market–check out the awesome new flavors:
Pure Protein just launched their new Pure Protein PLUS bars, which pack the same 20-21 grams of pure whey protein per bar, PLUS 15-16 grams of fiber – all with only 3 grams of sugar or less. The new bars come in four delicious flavors – Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Apple Pie and Mocha Brownie. They’re made with real chunks of cookie dough, cookies, brownies, and apples, and contain no artificial sweeteners or GMOs.
These launched right on time! When you’re training, you have to pay close attention to your diet to keep from getting derailed by life’s surprises–Here are three ways that I sneak in protein while I’m training for a big race:
- I add either Pure Protein Crunch bites or chopped up bits of a Pure Protein PLUS bar to my favorite yogurt. Around midday I usually have a yogurt as a snack so it’s super easy to add Pure Protein as a fun topping. Plus it helps me curb my appetite so that I’m not tempted to eat a huge lunch.
- Have a half or whole bar right after a run. I’ve noticed that when I come inside after a long run, by the time I’ve taken a shower and gotten myself together I am ravenous! Having a Pure Protein bar right after is key to me not eating the entire kitchen. This quick snack helps me refuel and tide me over until it’s time for my next meal.
- Satisfy late night cravings for sweets: let’s face it, it’s very rare that you can find a healthy snack that’s easy to handle when you are watching Netflix after hours. Usually the only snacks people get are the ones high in sugar and those have little protein. I plan ahead by keeping Pure Protein PLUS bars in the house, which have only 3 grams of sugar and 20 grams of protein, making late night snacking completely guilt free! Did I mention that Apple Pie is a flavor??
I am so excited about these new Pure Protein PLUS bars, (and so is Joshua, my 7 year old, who has completely eaten all of my Cookies and Cream flavor!). It will definitely help me keep on track with my eating during marathon training!
