The Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Musical Is A Can’t Miss!

What is better than dinner and a show? I’ll tell you what. Candy, Dinner & a Show! The MOMS hosted a super fun event last week that started at Dylan’s Candy Bar and ended with the brand new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Musical.

Dylan’s Candy Bar

I decided to take my eldest because he has been in LOVE with live shows since pretty much the day he was born. Plus his little brother is not quite impressed with live shows, he’d rather be playing with cars somewhere.

We traveled after school to the Upper East Side to the world famous Dylan’s Candy Bar which has over 7000 types of candy in that one store! From the moment we walked in, my son was over the moon—all the candy a kid could ask for right at his fingertips!

We got a private tour of the facility with tons of sweet treats along the way. Did you know that the most popular Jelly Belly flavors are Butter Popcorn and Cherry? I thought that was so odd, but everyone else seemed to agree with this wholeheartedly.

Then they did the unthinkable. They gave the kids a mini bucket and allowed them to fill it with as much candy as they wanted! It was insane—but really cool. I MAY or MAY NOT have influenced my child’s bucket filling.

“Oh Hey look! There’s Mike & Ike’s!”

“There’s Swedish Fish!”

“Don’t you want some of those caramel squares??” 🙂

Afterwards the kids had chicken tenders, french fries and this incredible ice cream sundae dessert. We ate and hurried downtown a few stops which was insane during rush hour in Times Square with kids, but we did it!

I’ll admit, I was a TAD more excited than my son to see Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Musical. Somehow in my lack of parenting skill I have NOT shared this story with my children so he was going in brand new. Meanwhile I have very clear memories of singing “Who can make the sunshine…” in grade school and reading the book over and over until I was fully immersed in the story.

When the show started I was astonished at how quickly all the words came for all of the songs. Here I was have a moment and watching my son experience it for the first time was so fun! Plus, the incredible Christian Borle starred as Willy Wonka! He was SO funny and perfect for the role. I remember him from The Good Wife but really from SMASH! (which was one of the BEST shows ever, and only had 2 seasons!).

I don’t want to give too much of the musical away but I will say that I enjoyed every single scene. It was definitely a modern 2017 version of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory so everyone in the audience were able to follow along and identify. I laughed A LOT—way more than I usually do. The Oompaloompas were just brilliant. Josh was thoroughly impressed—he still can’t stop talking about the show!

I am a fan! And also of Dylan's Candy Bar. I went once in NYC and still think about it. I'd love to take Scarlet there and to see this show!

OK, I am so jealous of both the Dylan's Candy Bar tour and the Charlie and the Charlie Factory Play experience! Seriously both looked so awesome and what an experience. My girls would have been over the moon at the candy store part of this, but my oldest like yours would have been truly excited for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as she has seen the movie and also read the book this past year. So, will have to keep the play in mind for her now. Thanks for sharing :)

OMG I didn't even know this was a thing? My boys would love this show and they have seen both movies and they love them. I'll have to start planning!! And Dylan's Candy Bar has a store at Mohegan Sun casino so I can say firsthand, her stuff is amazing!! Love those little buckets :-)...and I am also surprised at the most popular jelly bean flavors. That's just weird.
