When you are a busy family, meal planning is not easy. There have been plenty of times where I have been running around and realized that I had absolutely nothing to make for dinner.
Something that helps a lot is meal planning. The type of meal planning we do is very minimal. Meal planning usually happens in conjunction with grocery shopping.
Since we all have very different tastes, I could be planning anywhere from 6-7 meals to be cooked during the week (and that includes takeout nights!).
Another really great benefit of meal planning is that you can make healthier choices ahead of time.
You can also plan the quick meals for nights when you know you are going to be home later than normal.

I used to spend an enormous amount of time preparing, but I’ve learned to prepare some things in advance. One of the things that can really slow you down is chopping onions and peppers.
You can either buy them prepackaged or you could simply put them on the cutting board and chop, chop, chop until they are in reasonably sized pieces. Then you can put them into a freezer bag and freeze them.
When I needed chopped onions or peppers for meatloaf, spaghetti, chili or whatever, I’d reach into the freezer, grab a handful and toss them in.
Also, I learned how to organize my freezer — keeping all of the desserts on one level, breakfast foods on another and the meats in their own separate corner so I know what I have on hand at all times.
One of the ways to take the hassle out of deciding what to have, is to make a list of every kind of meal you make and when you need to decide, refer to the list.
I’d spend more time trying to decide on what to have for dinner at times than actually preparing it. Keep the list with you so you can refer to it anywhere.
When you get home, you’ll know exactly what you’re going to prepare.
