5 Reasons Why You Might Want To Spend LESS Time Working Out

The amazing folks at Bowflex provided me with a MaxTrainer in exchange for this post, all opinions and thoughts are 100% mine.

I’ve had to learn a hard lesson about time and training in the last 8 months. In my old job I simply had more time to workout. I could travel during my lunch breaks, go after work, get up early and run–these options have pretty much been eliminated. *insert sad face*

Without being able to move the way I want I’ve been forced to get really creative with the little time that I do have. All of a sudden, I had to re-learn everything that I know about working out, all my life I’ve been working out for at least an hour or more. With my current schedule I’m lucky to get more than 30 minutes of fitness without hiring a babysitter. It’s really hard!

It’s at these times that I am so happy I partnered with Bowflex to receive a MaxTrainer in my home. It has really been a lifesaver. There have been days where I have not been able to get to the gym and knowing that no matter how long of a day it’s been I can jump on the MaxTrainer and do *at least* 15 minutes of hard work.

5 Reason Shorter Workouts-3546The best part of jumping on the MaxTrainer is that I know I will be working really hard. I’ve used the trainer often since receiving it a month ago and I’ve been drenched in sweat every single time. The interval workouts are not only tough, but since the MaxTrainer combines the movements of a stepper and elliptical, I find myself working really hard throughout the entire 15 minutes!

The MaxTrainer has really changed how I feel about short workouts and here are 5 Reasons Short workouts may be your best bet:

  1. Time saver:  For some reason we are all convinced that we need to spend all day in the gym in order to be as fit as possible. If you don’t have that option because you are insanely busy, 15 minutes of fitness can make the difference between a really good day and a okay one.
  2. Work harder: Somehow knowing that I have a short time to workout makes me push even harder because not only will it be over pretty quickly I want to make sure I get the most out of my time spent.
  3. More intentional: There have been many times when I have gone to the gym with an hour to workout and I had no idea what I was going to do–with shorter workouts you have to plan because every minute needs to be used efficiently.
  4. Multiple per day: Remember when I posted about two a day workouts? Sometimes all you have is 15 minutes in the morning and 15 at night. You can get the same benefits from working out in segments that you can from working out in one extended session.
  5. Flexibility: You can workout early in the morning before you get your day started, late at night before you hit the hay, or randomly in the middle of the day when the mood strikes, if you have 15 minutes that you can carve out, you might as well use it to fit in your workout!

We are constantly seeing images in mainstream media of the certain ways and rules of working out. When you simply don’t have the time, this can be insanely overwhelming. Sometimes you have to get creative and use your time to the best of your ability! Remember, something is ALWAYS better than nothing!

How long do you spend on your workouts? Have you ever considered workout harder for less time?

I actually love that idea - to work harder for less time. That's why I love barre classes because I'm so done, but I feel like I worked hard on strength and toning and flexibility, and then I'm sorta.. done for the day. Ya know?

I know a few people who do 10 min workouts throughout the day and they have fab results. I don't know the exact schedule but I know they do some in the mornings and at night. I also think that workouts can consist of parking far from the store and walking, or walking up and down your steps, easy things that you can incorporate for a few minutes

Totally agree that workouts don't have to be long to be effective. Sometimes working harder can even mean worse. I know someone who's been working with a trainer for a while and he's been pushing her so hard that she's had multiple injuries. Even if it takes longer to get where you want to be, it's not worth working out too hard just to shoot for faster results and risk potential injury!

I really hate working out. If it's not zumba, dance class, or pole fitness you'd be hard pressed to find me in a gym for more than 30 minutes. The few times I am in the gym its to do some ab work.
