Why HelloFresh is my New Favorite Food Subscription Box!

by Nellie

SAMSUNG CSCHave you guys heard of HelloFresh?

Last week I was invited to a media preview dinner which included an amazing cooking lesson and dinner to follow. It was one of the best events I have ever been to–and you guys know I go to a LOT of events. I had a chance to meet the amazing CEO, staff and suppliers of this amazing food delivery service and I can tell you now–I am not only a believer, I am likely now a customer.

The Suppliers

Even though it was a cold and rainy night–Joaquin was on his way–I made it down to Miette on Mulberry in Little Italy to check out what HelloFresh was all about. When I walked in I was greeted by everyone in the room, I immediately felt welcome and at ease. I grabbed an Arnold Palmer and immediately went to checkout all of the stations in the room. There was Meat, Seafood, Fruits and Veggies & Bread.

The Meat

Did I mention there were tasting samples? Yes. I sampled the steak and the pork sausage and it was delicious. The meats are super high quality and fresh. I am a meat snob so I know a good steak when I see one!SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

The Seafood

The seafood looked super fresh as well. I am allergic to seafood but the tasting reactions I saw were overly positive.

The Fruits and Vegetables

Ah. This was my favorite station–there was a huge spread of fruits and vegetables in all kinds of beautiful colors. They had sliced mangoes for sample and they were the ripest yummiest mangoes I have EVER tasted–and I GREW UP on mangoes during my visits to Jamaica several times a year when I was younger. I wanted to sneak the plate away but I decided to behave.SAMSUNG CSC

The Bread

Oh my word. The bread. My arch nemesis. Yet, my best friend. They had all kinds of bread on display for sample including a sourdough, multigrain and even breadsticks. They also had kosher salt and extra virgin olive oil for dipping.SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

The Cooking Lesson

The group was split into three teams. I was on Team Latkes. We were all given duties throughout (for example: I peeled the potato while my teammates chopped the onion).  I haven’t had latkes since grade school and I don’t know why I have waited so long to have them again. The recipe was a Level 3 recipe which is their most advanced type of recipe but I found it pretty easy to do.

I have never made beet salad before but I was super impressed with the ease of it.

The Dinner

Finally it was time for us to eat. I had prechosen the steak with horseradish sauce and potatoes. The real star of the show however was the kale and quinoa salad that we had for appetizers. It was SO good. I was even able to grab the extras to take home with me the next day!SAMSUNG CSC

During the dinner we got to hear from the CEO of HelloFresh. He shared with us that he understood that we were all super busy and that it takes a lot to really get a freshly prepared meal on the table every night.SAMSUNG CSC

He explained to us that HelloFresh is more than food, it is an experience. Their mission is to get families and friends around the dinner table with fresh ingredients and even better company. By having everything ready for you in the box you have no excuse to not only make better choices but make real, amazing food right in your own kitchen.

I am so excited to try my first box, and I will be sure to share that experience with you. Right now, if you sign up for HelloFresh you can get $20 off your first box! Boxes come in family size or even just for two. The price of the boxes are really worth it because if you rely on takeout (as I sometimes do) the price of the takeout is WAY more than the HelloFresh box!

It was such an incredible time meeting the staff, suppliers and other press on hand at the HelloFresh event. Stay tuned for my review!

Have you ever tried a food subscription box? What was your experience? What things would you look for in a subscription food service?

How does this compare to Blue Apron? I loved their stuff but it was a little pricey. I really want to try these guys out and did not even know they existed so THANK YOU! And I couldn’t agree more about having a love/hate relationship with bread 🙂

We use Blue Apron. I’ve seen tons of advertisements for Hello Fresh but never signed up. Food Subscription boxes are really useful. I’m happy to have the food delivered along with recipes. It helps take some of the guesswork out of meal planning.

I had a coupon for HelloFresh in the past and kept forgetting to use it believe it or not. I definitely thank you for sharing just how good their food is though and may just have to give your coupon above a try, because I, too, am a meat snob and been looking for a place that has good meat since our local grocery store just recently closed. So, thanks Nellie 🙂

I tried Hello Fresh awhile back and I thought the food was good but was disappointed by the inability to really customize my box. But overall I think the meal subscription services are really fun and a great way to try new things and it makes life a little easier!

I tried plated…it was okay although I didn’t like the recipe the food was fresh. I think these boxes are great ideas but I guess I have to get use to meals that I don’t normally cook it’s not my reg so I always have to add stuff

I’ve tried Blue Apron and Marley Spoon and both were pretty good. I’m looking forward to trying Hello Fresh at the end of the month as my friend gifted me with a free week!

I dream about food subscription services, to be honest. Each and every weeknight. And hello Team Latkes! Yum! And marinated beet salad? Yes.

This is a really interesting concept and would be so helpful for those who are too busy to go grocery shopping but still want to eat wholesome home cooked foods.

My only concern is food safety. I’m not sure how I feel if seafood were left sitting at my doorstep for several hours if I’m not home yet. Do you happen to know if they have flexible delivery time slots?

Oh, wow this sounds so good! Congrats on making such a high level recipe. Subscription boxes are huge right now, and I can understand the appeal. Thank for sharing your experience!
