Exclusive Interview With Women’s World Cup Champion Alex Morgan!

by Nellie

Last week the amazing folks at Tampax invited me to Alex Morgan’s Pro Camp in Hoboken New Jersey. The soccer field was filled with super skilled girls of all ages practicing their soccer tricks with an amazing NYC backdrop.

I had the awesome opportunity to interview Alex and ask her what she thought about winning the World Cup, Installing confidence in girls, and her favorite fitness tips–enjoy!

Me: So my first question for you is what are your favorite memories of the World Cup?

Alex Morgan: I’ve got a lot of memories from the World Cup. The first thing that comes to mind is just hoisting the trophy on the platform. We got all of our medals and that was probably the pinnacle of the summer, but there’s a lot of other memories, like scoring the goal that I scored, just having the player on Germany miss the penalty kick, to help the momentum shift for us. There’s so many moments. Also looking up into the stands and only seeing thousands of little girls and thousands of little boys having on Morgan jerseys and #1 jerseys. That was really cool to see and something that’s very new to female sports, having young boys also watch.

Me: My son’s watching too.

Alex Morgan: You definitely see the shift and the fact that it’s a lot more cool now to watch women’s soccer whereas boys wouldn’t want to before.

Me: The support is nice!

Alex Morgan: Yes. I think there’s certain things you see where you just realize kind of looking back where you say ‘wow that is pretty cool’ and you kind of don’t get to take it all in because you’re so focused.

Me: Yes, absolutely. How was the ticker tape parade? I was there. It was so much fun wasn’t it?

Alex Morgan: The ticker tape parade was by far like the best experience, post World Cup experience I’ve done to date. It was incredible, the fact that the city would put that on with three days notice.

Me: It was incredible! I couldn’t even believe it!

Alex Morgan: We’re the first female athletes to be honored since the 60s so that alone just speaks volumes as to how important it was and for us, the impact and the support that we got throughout the World Cup because we didn’t quite get to experience that while we were in Canada. It gets like, see all the people dressed and going to the bars or having family over and having a World Cup party.

Me: Perfect! So I would like you to talk a little bit about the importance of confidence on and off the field, especially while you teamed up with Tampax.

Alex Morgan: Yeah, I’m here with Tampax and they actually put on about six clinics together and this will be the last one here in Hoboken, but confidence because it’s kind of the word that comes to my mind when I think of what I would tell a young girl or what I would tell myself when I was ten years old. Having that confidence and believing in yourself and having the support system, whether that is your parents or your siblings or your teammates, whoever that is, just knowing that you can go to someone for that confidence. It can be a little boost some days and for me growing up, I felt like I was on a roller coaster, not only with sports, but just in life.

Me: In general.

Alex Morgan: In high school, dealing with boys and academics and balancing things and so for me, that’s one thing that stands out for me is making sure these girls have confidence and I see no lack of confidence in these girls.

Me: They are pretty great!

Alex Morgan: So outgoing. They all just think they’re going to be the next Alex Morgan, Or Abby Wambach so that’s really exciting for me to see that they’re not shy. They’re all super excited to just go out and like follow their dreams because I feel like it wasn’t always like that, but they have so many female athletes to look up to, not only in soccer, but you have tennis and you know golf and women’s basketball. So many sports that are now on TV and more accessible for young girls to watch. I feel like that girls are finally realizing that anything they do, want to do.

Me: They can, absolutely. Absolutely. I read a blog for millennial moms about wellness and health and stuff like that. I guess my question would be what’s your favorite workout, like quick workout? Like if you have under an hour, what would you do?

Alex Morgan: My favorite quick workout in under an hour, I do this like circuit and I call it the death circuit, the circuit of death. It’s basically you run one mile as fast as you can, whether that’s outdoors or on a treadmill. It doesn’t matter. You don’t need gym equipment for it. So after you run that mile, then immediately you go into three minutes of 30 seconds of lunges, 30 seconds of push ups, 30 seconds of split, split, squat, 30 seconds of jump squats, so you do that for three minutes and you do front plank and side plank so that is three minutes and you take a three minute rest and you do that three more times.

Me: Oh my! Okay.

Alex Morgan: that in total is about 40-45 minutes and it will give you a great work out.

Me: Oh my goodness! So I know you’re super excited to be on the cover of the FIFA game. What does that mean to you?

Alex Morgan: You know what? I feel like I don’t realize the reach that a video game could actually have throughout this entire world and this country, but to share the cover with I think he’s 3 or 4 or 5 times World Player of the Year is a huge honor for me because I do want to be the best player I can be and whether that’s the best player in the world, then that’s what I’m reaching for now after getting a gold medal in the Olympics, after becoming World Cup Champion. For me, it’s now becoming the best player so to be honored side by side next to a player like Messi is really surreal for me and it’s exciting to see the hype!

Me: Yeah, that’s so incredible! So awesome! So what are your favorite beauty and fitness tips for moms?

Alex Morgan: Well I think number one beauty and fitness tip is sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.

Me: Sunscreen, totally agree.

Alex Morgan: It’s so important. For me it’s layering on the face. I think there’s like CC cream and BB cream. Also I love to, I always wear makeup whether it’s on the soccer field, at the gym.

Me: Oh do you really?

Alex Morgan: Yeah I do, but it’s more of a lightweight, like mineral based, like either it’s a powder or with sunscreen, I’ll always have sunscreen on. I will carry mascara in my bag at all times.

Me: Of course!

Alex Morgan: As far as fitness tips, I think hydrating is so important. I always have a bottle of water wherever I’m at. If I’m in an airport I’ll buy a bottle of water or I’ll carry my canteen of water and I love little energy bars, but making sure that it’s healthy because sometimes a lot of bars will have the type of stuff that’s not good.

Me: Not supposed to be good.

Alex Morgan: It’s a lot of calories and a lot of fat.

Me: Yeah, me too.

Alex Morgan: There’s really no secrets. There’s so many great outlets to find out what’s good to do for health and fitness and combining the two. It’s like it’s so easy to combine the two. It’s just kind of out there. It’s what works for you.

Me: Right, absolutely. So what are your predictions and what’s next as you look towards the 2016?

Alex Morgan: I’ve never actually been to Brazil. Well I’ve been to Brazil once, just last year, but I’ve never been to Rio so for me, I really want to make an impact with this team in 2016 and get another gold medal in Rio. That’s real important for me, but it’s also staying healthy and being the best in the world.SAMSUNG CSC

Me: Do you guys practice a lot together, like every day?

Alex Morgan: Yes

Me: Do you take breaks at all?

Alex Morgan: Yes so November is our off season.

Me: Are you looking forward to that?

Alex Morgan: Yeah! Hopefully I’ll get some vacation time with my husband.

Me: Oh that will be so nice! Cool, cool, cool. I think, what’s your favorite healthy treat?

Alex Morgan: Healthy treat? Is there such a thing?

Me: Of course there is!

Alex Morgan: I love hummus so I would say I also love guacamole, like avocado. I put avocado in everything. It’s good for you so I would say anything hummus.

Me: And your favorite go to pleasure? Food wise!

Alex Morgan: My favorite go to pleasure, I would really just say like Oreos.

Me: Oreos?

Alex Morgan: Yeah, just like a handful!

Me: Awesome!

That workout sounds totally brutal! Love that girls sports are getting more play these days. I still know lots of men who will say that womens sports just aren’t exciting enough. I think that the Women’s World Cup proved that wrong!
