Zumba vs. Running
A few times during my race last Sunday I asked myself: “Self. Why do you do this running thing? You are not a natural runner by any means. You are not a gazelle, and in fact 98% of the running world thinks that you are slow. Why even bother?” my answer was simple.
I have never ever challenged myself mentally and physically like this before. I know it’s been 4 months. I am a running newborn. Soaking in ALL the information like the brand new sponge that at I am. I am a known gym bunny, there isn’t a machine I haven’t attempted or a class I haven’t taken. Running has always been this elusive activity that I never ever thought I could conquer.
4 months in the game and I’ve run a half marathon and a few 10ks. I am planning my race calendar for 2015! Who AM I?! The aches and pains after a race are not to be envied, finding the time to diligently train is darn near impossible. Did I mention that I’m terrified to run in the winter?!
Yet, something about this running life has me hooked. I love seeing new cities by running through them. I love seeing my friends push and train and PR and simply only get better and better. I love putting one foot in front of the other and consistently moving forward.
How is Zumba different?
For anyone who is a fairly new reader my first love and most natural ability is as a Zumba Instructor. Zumba is written in my DNA. There is not a song that I hear that I love that I don’t automatically start choreographing. When I started teaching Zumba there was little anxiety and I knew I could do it.
Zumba has its challenges but they are minimal. Zumba is my spirit animal. One of my students told me that I come “alive” when I teach class. I absolutely agree.
The two are incredibly different. When I see folks running insanely fast, I almost feel as if I am wasting my time because I’ll never have that kind of speed. On the other hand, the mental strength that it takes to make it through any race has given me a confidence that has spilled over into all areas of my life such a blogging, work and everyday situations.
