I interrupt your regularly scheduled program to jump on my soapbox for some much needed clarification.
Last week Wednesday I was approached by a certain soda brand to lead a fitness class. I was excited and ready to go because I love Zumba and honestly I’d teach it daily on a street corner if I had a faithful following.
I wouldn’t be compensated and that was a bit shocking too considering the enormity of this brand but I STILL said okay because I was down for the cause. I don’t drink soda but the greater good would be that I’d be teaching what I love to hundreds of people–my people.
A few days later they let me know they would be going with someone else because I mentioned on my blog somewhere about cutting soda out of my diet.
Well. YES. Of COURSE I did. I am a healthy living blogger. Drinking soda everyday is not the best choice for me (neither are New York bagels for breakfast and rice everyday for dinner).
The sad part is that I spent a bit of time doing new choreography for this particular crowd.
Here is the thing: I will never encourage people to drink soda. Ever. I will always encourage my readers to live the healthiest life possible while taking care of themselves and their families. Point blank period.
I wasn’t angry about the decision and honestly I was proud of myself. They didn’t want to work with me because I promote a healthy lifestyle. Yes, I do. And I am damn proud of it.
You guys know it’s never ever been about the money (money, money) or I would have quit my day job a long time ago–it’s been about everything I believe in. It’s been about loving your body, doing the best you can and somehow taking care of your children in the process. There is no number or amount of exposure that can buy my integrity.
I have said this once and I have said this a thousand times. I get all kinds of crazy sponsored post offers in my inbox daily. 90% of them are NO. I don’t apply to every single opportunity that comes in my inbox and I don’t look to make quick cash from my readers. As a matter of fact the pickings have been slim lately (with the exception of my ambassadorships) which has allowed me to refocus on good content and fun stuff.
When I got the notice that I was no longer selected because of the statements made on my blog I replied with a simple “I understand” and a smiley face.
Your loss, buddy.
