What is going on y’all?!
Happy Friday!! Time for another entry into my half marathon training chronicles. 🙂 Let’s pick up from last week shall we?
The Accidental Long Run
Last week, I was super excited because I was set to run 6.0 miles, my first 10k, at Summer Streets in NYC. Except when I woke up Saturday morning it was raining really really hard, and this newbie runner was not about to try to run in the rain for six miles, that does not sound fun or appealing at all. However, I DID really want to see my bestie because I hadn’t seen her since the beach! So we went to have a really long lazy catch up breakfast downtown Brooklyn. It was awesome, much needed and completely worth every minute.
But even as I was eating I started feeling this itch to run. The rain had finally tapered off in the city. When I got on the train headed home, I somehow convinced myself that it was totally okay to run in the middle of the day…I mean it would only take an hour and a half…I could do it while the kids napped…it was totally fine? right?
So I did just that. I strapped on my Spibelt, charged up my phone to 100%, ramped up my Nike app, grabbed the coldest water bottle out of the fridge and started running. At 2pm in the day. In the sun. And humidity.
What was I thinking?
Everything started out great, I ran a great first mile, and felt pretty good regardless of the fact that it was 78 degrees with a slight breeze. My plan was to run for 3.0 miles then run back, simple right? Except when I started running on these Brooklyn streets I couldn’t believe all of the fun neighborhoods that I was passing through! It was beautiful. So many new sights, so many places that I have never seen by foot, only through the glass of a city bus.
When the nice Nike lady..(I call her Sara)..said that I had hit 3 miles, I ignored her, after all I was feeling SO good. My run walk intervals were working, I was seeing all of these new places. By the time I hit a neighborhood that is crazy far from me, I knew I oughta turn around. It wasn’t until that moment I realized that I had left the house with out money OR a MetroCard. Oops.
Guess What..? I now had 3.5 miles to get back home, and no other way to do it but to run. I said a little prayer and started running back. My water lasted me right until I got to my doorstep. When it was all said and done, I had run 7 Miles exactly. Longer than I ever could have imagined. I was crazy for doing it, but I did it. I also ran my first 10k! woot!!
This weeks training runs were as usual one good, one okay. The Tuesday run was particularly hard because of humidity but Thursday’s run felt pretty good. For the first time in forever I really did some hardcore cross training including a tough (mostly climbing) Spin class on Monday and a personal training session that was 100% body weight exercises that literally had me cussing up a storm. I am sore as EVER but I somehow feel stronger in my running this week. My new goal now is to incorporate cross training 2x a week in a low impact way that won’t cause any damage to my knees.
I also ordered an Amphipod hydration belt for my hydration issue, and I will be trying the GU gels for fuel during my long run this weekend. (7 miles again scheduled just to make sure last week wasn’t a fluke! LOL)
