BAM Half Training: The Accidental Long Run + Cross Training

What is going on y’all?!

Happy Friday!! Time for another entry into my half marathon training chronicles. 🙂 Let’s pick up from last week shall we?

The Accidental Long Run

Last week, I was super excited because I was set to run 6.0 miles, my first 10k, at Summer Streets in NYC. Except when I woke up Saturday morning it was raining really really hard, and this newbie runner was not about to try to run in the rain for six miles, that does not sound fun or appealing at all. However, I DID really want to see my bestie because I hadn’t seen her since the beach! So we went to have a really long lazy catch up breakfast downtown Brooklyn. It was awesome, much needed and completely worth every minute.

But even as I was eating I started feeling this itch to run. The rain had finally tapered off in the city. When I got on the train headed home, I somehow convinced myself that it was totally okay to run in the middle of the day…I mean it would only take an hour and a half…I could do it while the kids napped…it was totally fine? right?

So I did just that. I strapped on my Spibelt, charged up my phone to 100%, ramped up my Nike app, grabbed the coldest water bottle out of the fridge and started running. At 2pm in the day. In the sun. And humidity. What was I thinking?

Everything started out great, I ran a great first mile, and felt pretty good regardless of the fact that it was 78 degrees with a slight breeze. My plan was to run for 3.0 miles then run back, simple right? Except when I started running on these Brooklyn streets I couldn’t believe all of the fun neighborhoods that I was passing through! It was beautiful. So many new sights, so many places that I have never seen by foot, only through the glass of a city bus.

When the nice Nike lady..(I call her Sara)..said that I had hit 3 miles, I ignored her, after all I was feeling SO good. My run walk intervals were working, I was seeing all of these new places. By the time I hit a neighborhood that is crazy far from me, I knew I oughta turn around. It wasn’t until that moment I realized that I had left the house with out money OR a MetroCard. Oops.

Guess What..? I now had 3.5 miles to get back home, and no other way to do it but to run. I said a little prayer and started running back. My water lasted me right until I got to my doorstep. When it was all said and done, I had run 7 Miles exactly. Longer than I ever could have imagined. I was crazy for doing it, but I did it. I also ran my first 10k! woot!!

Training Runs

This weeks training runs were as usual one good, one okay. The Tuesday run was particularly hard because of humidity but Thursday’s run felt pretty good. For the first time in forever I really did some hardcore cross training including a tough (mostly climbing) Spin class on Monday and a personal training session that was 100% body weight exercises that literally had me cussing up a storm. I am sore as EVER but I somehow feel stronger in my running this week. My new goal now is to incorporate cross training 2x a week in a low impact way that won’t cause any damage to my knees.

I also ordered an Amphipod hydration belt for my hydration issue, and I will be trying the GU gels for fuel during my long run this weekend. (7 miles again scheduled just to make sure last week wasn’t a fluke! LOL)

How were your runs this week? How was your fitness/eating this week? Have you ever gone too far and realized you have a really long way to go home? Any fun weekend plans?

Awesome job! I couldn’t help but smile while reading this post. It’s so interesting how one can gain a new appreciation for one’s surroundings when traveling on foot. Yet another gift that running gives us….

Nice work, sister!

Woohoo!!! Nellie I am so proud of you! You cannot say that you are not a runner! That little itch you got during breakfast only proves it even more! Your app is right, your goal (the half) doesn’t stand a chance. You are going to blow it out of the water!! BTW, I love when I see the calorie burn on my watch. It’s crazy how much you use!

Right?! When I saw that 1000 cals burned I was shocked! That was the first time I ever saw something like that.

You did it!!!! You just keep proving to yourself that there are NO EXCUSES and you’re actually starting to love running – which is better then any other reward. I love that you were able to have that feeling of “touring” your own ‘hood on foot. There is seriously no better way to check out a new (or old!) place.
Can’t wait to read about your 7 miler (I’ll be thinking of you!) and cross-training will only make you stronger!!!!

Thanks Allie!! I couldn’t believe how many new places I saw! I was kinda stunned at all of the things I never noticed before. 🙂 You are right I feel much better running after cross training the day before somehow I thought it would be the opposite!

Ok, that was truly awesome and amazing. I seriously am so proud of you and way to go, Nellie. Take it from someone, who is not and never will be a runner, when I say, I am in awe of you right now and bow down to you for this and so much more! Happy Weekend now 🙂

While I don’t run… I’ve gone a bit too hard at the gym and then realized that I still have to walk to the train, and then walk home and regretted it. Like last night – I was killing it on the stepmill doing intervals… and then I realized that I have a longer than normal walk home. That’s what happens when I get a good playlist, I guess! lol Congrats on your 10K!

First, I love that you decided to go ahead and run even though you weren’t able to do the original 10K you had planned – awesome!!
And, the fact that you went way over the plan is so cool!!
Way to go!!

Ok the only time I ever did something too far with a long way home.. was when I used to live by a Shop-Rite and I walked there. While there, I forgot that I hadn’t driven.. and I bought like.. 8 bags of groceries.
I had to call my sister to come pick me up!
Not related to running, though. You rock!

Um, so I pretty much love everything about this post. I am so proud of you, you are doing so well in your training! Congrats on 7 miles, that is a HUGE achievement! I’ll tell you what else doesn’t stand a chance – the Disney Princess half marathon, baby! You are going to ROCK IT.

This week my runs have been kind of lackluster – my long run just felt super hard, for some reason. I feel like I have a week where I feel invincible, followed by a week of suckville.

Yaaay! You go girl!
Well, this week was just an exercise in making myself run. That 4:30 am alarm is NO JOKE!

But I did it. I”ve been doing the research on the hydration and of course the gels too. Let me know how your gels work!

Reply
Nellie August 12, 2014 - 8:08 pm

the gels were…interesting but they did work!

How awesome! I’m a firm believer that if your mind tells you it wants to do something, like run, you should do it. Conditions be damned! I’ve kept up with my running this week but my cross training has only been so so. Eating is good. Stopped tracking because I’ve been busy but I know I’m not getting in enough calories. Yesterday I hardly ate anything at all.

conditions are the ruler for me though, rain/humidity/heat all affect my running in negative ways but I still must train. Make sure you get some calories girl!

[…] I love the Nike+ Running app and I like looking at the home page. Even though I’m friends with other people it always shows me against Nellie. And let me just say she’s crushing me in mileage this month. I’m sure it’s because of this. […]

I don’t normally fun but if there is a good view, I’ll give it a shot! That’s so cool that you stumbled on all these neighborhoods! Also, it’s amazing that you were able to go so far! You are becoming a running superstar for sure!
