Community Meetings + A Honest Review Of The Secret Life Of Pets

by Nellie

How was your weekend?

It was one of those weekends where the excursions blurred into one another and just like that we were waking up for Monday morning shenanigans all over again.

Community Meetings

I woke up early on Saturday morning to attend a community interest meeting for the New York Road Runners Open Run Series. I was CRAY excited to see my local park, the one where I did my 20 mile run in, have a great series like the Open Run.

What is the an Open Run?

Through this initiative, New York Road Runners is working with community leaders and volunteers to bring free weekly runs to local neighborhood parks all over NYC. All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants.

It was an awesome turnout! There were at least 20 people in the room, and we walked the new route. I even signed up to be a volunteer Run Director! I guess I’m officially a runner. 🙂

Emergency Action Meeting

One of my local colleges held a meeting hosted by the Brooklyn NAACP to come together and talk about all that has been happening with the Black Lives Matter movement and all the trauma we have collectively experienced on social and traditional media. I mentioned last week that personally the videos and images did a number on me emotionally and really I haven’t been able to function properly since.

The meeting provided some concrete next steps and lots of community leaders and members expressed the same type of feelings that I felt. It was comforting to say the least. There is a lot to be done but I am willing to be on the front lines when it comes to protecting my kids, friends, and family.

Secret Life Of Pets

We have been waiting for this movie for a REALLY long time. The boys have been counting down the days since we attended the event with all the fun toys and merch in February!

The boys really loved the movie, but I noticed that there were a LOT of adults there without children. As a result, there were a lot more adult laughs than kids laughs. My husband and sister in law were laughing the most! It was definitely a funny movie, most of the time I really wasn’t sure what was about to happen. There were some really intense parts in the beginning that I felt was a bit strong, but in the end it all worked itself out.

I can absolutely see a sequel coming, especially if it does well. It was super cute and really quite honestly Kevin Hart’s character “Snowball” was the BEST. He deserves a movie all on his own. 🙂

Have you seen The Secret Life of Pets? How was your weekend? Does your local park hold open runs?

I’m so glad you were abel to attend a community meeting and find some support. I hope you can find some peace or maybe be able to do more though your community and the team of leaders you met there. I know I always feel better when I can actually DO something.
I also really love that you you attended a NYRR meeting and even signed up to be a volunteer director? WoW!!!
My dad and stepmom took the boys to see the Secret Life of Pets over the weekend and they ALL loved it. I have to say, I was kind of upset because I really want to see it!!

This week has been crazy. We need to spread more love because even in other places in the world hate seems to run rampant. These are scary times but we all need to have the courage to stand up and say “NO MORE”. Weekend was good otherwise. Settling in for another hot week.

I have secretly been wanting to see this movie, but I don’t have kids so I didn’t want to be the weirdo solo adult in the audience! But based on your review maybe I can go and not look weird, lol

Weekend was filled with photoshoots and meetings. I have heard that the secret life wasn’t that good and I should wait for dvd. I am still debating but we may go and see it anyway

It was a good weekend, as you may have seen from the blog or FB. I’ll write a more detailed post soon.
I’m happy for your honest review. Scarlet is seeing it with her camp this week but I was wondering about taking Des when I get back from NYC.
And maybe I’ll see YOUR gorgeous face.

I’m ready for all the news to calm down. Our family is still reeling a bit from the protests in Baltimore last year. All this new stuff is just too much. I heard decent things from one of T’s friend’s mothers, but other than that we haven’t heard much about The Secret Life of Pets. Perhaps that’s one best left for Netflix.
