Peacocks & Turtles: A Fun Day In Prospect Park Zoo

I should probably preface this post with the fact that I was not born with a natural affinity for animals. I don’t know what it is, I’ve never wanted a dog or cat and being in barn areas simply give me the heebie jeebies. I know however, that my kids are different from me and I want to expose them to all things just like how I learned about many different things as a kid.

A couple of weekends ago, after my allergy filled no sleep 5k (details on that Friday), I took the kids to the local Prospect Park Zoo. This zoo is itty bitty compared to the largest zoo in the city, the Bronx Zoo, but I wanted to try the kids out here first to make sure they could handle it. It was also the official silly face day.

When we arrived admission was nice and affordable at $8 per adult and $5 per kid. Upon entrance we saw a crowd gathered and heard lots of squeals from children. When we got closer we realized that there were several gorgeous peacocks roaming the grounds. At first I thought maybe they got loose somehow but they were actually put there on purpose!

Once we pried the kids away from the peacocks, we started our tour. We saw Turtles, monkeys, meerkat and tons of other wildlife. The kids were crazy excited to peer into the glass and find whichever animal was highlighted.

Although I didn’t get as excited about the animals as I pretended to be for the kids, I did find joy in the gorgeousness that is Prospect Park. This park is definitely Central Park’s younger yet equally beautiful little sister.

We ended the day where else? On the carousel of course!

We loved Prospect Park and will be back before the summer ends… It is easy, local, and you can be done with the entire place in less than 3 hours. Perfect.

When is the last time you went to the zoo? Are you an animal person?

I am a HUGE animal person. I was almost in a car accident yesterday to avoid hitting a bunny. Oh, we can exclude reptiles and turtles from my animal love list. It looks like a nice sized zoo for kids that age. The STL zoo is huge and sometimes you can’t get through the entire thing in one day with little ones.

We have totally done the Queens Zoo, which is similar to Prospect Park in the time it takes to get around the actual zoo. And like you, we also always hit the carousel at the end!! 🙂

I think the last time I went to the Zoo was when I was in Sydney years and years ago and saw all their indigenous animals.

I love the peacocks! How gorgeous! I’m not an animal person either! We didn’t really have many pets growing up and so I’m kind of afraid of dogs. I also really don’t like them in the city since people let them go to the bathroom wherever and never clean up after them!

I’m not an animal person to have them in my house but I love going to the zoo – we used to go to new zoos every time we went someplace different. I think the boys and I will hit up a zoo or two this summer!

I’m definitely an animal person. The last time I went to the zoo was last April with my sister. She loves down the street from one and we took the kids. It has a beautiful train ride that wraps around the zoo and a lake.
The red panda is so cute!! So sleepy!

What a fun family outing! Boys and critters are a natural combination. You definitely made me giggle with the “official silly face day” remark. Your boys are so cute!

We go to the zoo every few months. My son is crazy about lions and so we spend way too much time staring at the lions because he doesn’t want to see much else! LOL!

We are definitely animal people! We have a dog. She was our first baby before the kids came along.

Looks like a fun day at the zoo. Your kids are adorbs!!!!!

Great pictures!! That is a beatiful little zoo. I love the idea of the peacocks roaming around like that! I love animals and the zoo was always one of my more favorite things to do. I haven’t been to the Buffalo Zoo since the kids were little but I would love to go back even if it’s just me.

Me too!! Even as a kid I remember the bronx zoo being overwhelming—but awesome 🙂 I heard they have upgraded so much. I need to check it out for sure.

Like you, I’m not so much of an animal-person but I do love seeing peacocks. I’m not obsessed with them though. They’re so captivating and colorful at times. Your kids are so adorable. Can’t wait to bring my son to the zoo too! 🙂
