I should probably preface this post with the fact that I was not born with a natural affinity for animals. I don’t know what it is, I’ve never wanted a dog or cat and being in barn areas simply give me the heebie jeebies. I know however, that my kids are different from me and I want to expose them to all things just like how I learned about many different things as a kid.
A couple of weekends ago, after my allergy filled no sleep 5k (details on that Friday), I took the kids to the local Prospect Park Zoo. This zoo is itty bitty compared to the largest zoo in the city, the Bronx Zoo, but I wanted to try the kids out here first to make sure they could handle it. It was also the official silly face day.
When we arrived admission was nice and affordable at $8 per adult and $5 per kid. Upon entrance we saw a crowd gathered and heard lots of squeals from children. When we got closer we realized that there were several gorgeous peacocks roaming the grounds. At first I thought maybe they got loose somehow but they were actually put there on purpose!
Once we pried the kids away from the peacocks, we started our tour. We saw Turtles, monkeys, meerkat and tons of other wildlife. The kids were crazy excited to peer into the glass and find whichever animal was highlighted.
Although I didn’t get as excited about the animals as I pretended to be for the kids, I did find joy in the gorgeousness that is Prospect Park. This park is definitely Central Park’s younger yet equally beautiful little sister.
We ended the day where else? On the carousel of course!
We loved Prospect Park and will be back before the summer ends… It is easy, local, and you can be done with the entire place in less than 3 hours. Perfect.
