I have been hearing all over the blogs and the fitness scene about the Bollywood dance craze that is taking over the fitness industry. I got an invitation to try out a Bollywood style class led by the one and only Sarina Jain. Known as the “Jane Fonda of India” Sarina has created a Masala Bhangra dance class movement that keep your heart rate up while making you feel like you were in an actual Bollywood movie!
[Tweet “#MasalaBhangra with @SarinaJain keeps your heart rate pumping while having fun!”]
The class was held at the legendary Alvin Ailey studios on the upper west side. This was my first time taking a class there and I felt so honored because of the deep respect that I have for the institution.
The class was like we were practicing for a show or as Sarina said “An Indian Wedding”. She taught us several 8 counts and had us practice them over and over until we got it… Then she added on. By the end we had an entire choreographed routine! It was sick!
What I loved though was that during the class she did not stay in the front–she moved around. She gave us visualizations to go with the dance moves. She let us know which moves were masculine and which were feminine. She told us when to smile and when the whip out hair. When to be strong and when to be completely sexy. She told a story with her moves and by the end we all picked up our scarves and did the entire routine with them. It was seriously all sorts of awesome!
I managed to set the video to record the entire choreography–check it out!
Sarina is currently fundraising to get her Infomercial on TV! She has two amazing DVDs that is guaranteed to make you sweat but is still ton of fun too!

That looks so fun! I would love to learn how to dance that!
dance fitness is a great way to get your sweat on!
So cool!!! I’m so glad you were able to take the video because that was awesome!!! I fully expect this to be showcased at Healthy U 2015 🙂
Ohhhh mann, girlll that would be all kinds of awesome 😉
I am totally all for getting your dance on to exercise. Probably still one of my most favorite ways to workout and this looked like so much fun, too!! 🙂
yes dancing is definitely one of my favorite ways to workout!!
I would definitely try this out it looks fun and that’s the best way to lose weight. I walk in the mornings but I think I might switch to exercising at night it may help me sleep better.
I think exercise helps sleep no matter when its done but like you I am a morning exerciser for sure.
This looks like so much fun! I had no idea this was becoming a fitness craze, though. Thanks for keeping me in the loop 🙂
haha yes its all over the place, maybe its just an nyc thing? hmm.
I am still a morning person, but now I am trying to just be more active ALL of the time. lol
I love your workout tee too!
Thanks girl. I struggle in the evenings badddd. I used to do it back in the day but not so much anymore!
So fun! I love Masala Bhangra! It’s like a party! Alvin Ailey is great. They also have some awesome Zumba classes there too!
It totally felt like a party too 🙂 I loved it. I need to go back soon for sure!
That dance class sounds right up your alley – I bet you caught on very quickly!!
I like morning workouts. When I went to Zumba last summer it was in the evening which was fine because I felt like it was more of bonus activity than a true workout since I flounder a lot!!!
ha, something about the evenings are tough for me because I am usually so drained by that time!
Nellie, you totally rocked that! I loved the video. I have no coordination, but I am back to running 5 times a week! Yippee!
yay Michelle!! thats awesome!! so happy to hear that. I know how much your running schedule means to you.
That sounds like so much fun! Though dance DVDs aren’t really my thing, I would be thrilled if my gym started a class. i know you’re a gym rat, too. If her DVD comes out, would you buy it?
totally!! It is crazy fun!! 🙂
That video made me want to MOVE! You look like you’re taking it so seriously and you’re doing such a great job. I love some of these moves so much!

What an experience!
It was great!! She was an absolute doll.
I love anything Bollywood and I would love this. I’ve done Bollywood workouts and love them. A live class would be awesome!
Yes!! I had no idea how much cardio was involved–everything was burning! 🙂
You are absolutely blessed to meet her Nellie! I can see how much you had fun! Bollywood has always sounded so interesting to me. Way to go! 🙂
