Mayim’s Vegan Table – Mayim Bialik’s Meet and Greet #MayimMamarazzi

by Nellie

Mayim's vegan TableLast week I was invited by The Moms to attend a book launch event featuring Mayim Bialik’s new cookbook “Mayim’s Vegan Table” which features over 100 completely vegan recipes she created! The event was held at Cafe Blossom (see the irony?) in the village.

While we were there we got to taste some very yummy vegetarian appetizers. Every single thing I tried was delish ! I hadn’t a clue what was in it but it tasted good so that is all that matters! I don’t think I have ever tried vegan food before. I am now a fan!

After that we all sat down to have an informal Q&A with Mayim.

Mayim blogs for many sites and noticed a request and demand for her veganized recipes. Since she is a normal mom cook, she published her recipes not to be a celebrity chef, but to really show that a lot of normal recipes can be veganized and taste great too.

Being a full time working mom,  where does she find the time?

Mayim cooks several meals on Sundays. She told us that not the planning every meal for every day type but she takes time to cook on Sundays. Since a lot of the vegan recipes call for the same ingredients she doesn’t have to go grocery shopping as much. She cooks things that she can freeze! (smart!)

What is Mayim’s favorite recipe in Mayim’s Vegan Table?

A few of her favorites include: Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, Vegan Mac and Cheese , and Kale Chips that satisfies salty crunchy cravings.

Were Mayim brought up vegan?

She was not brought up vegan,  however she ate no no sugary cereals, only ate granola, raw carrots, baked apples, and she grew up on meat and dairy. She became a vegetarian at 19 years old and had has transitioned into completely vegan ever since.

Do you get to have a normal routine with your kids? What are your hours on the Big Bang Theory?

School hours! She works 3 days a week 9-3,  off weekends April to August off as well.

She also has tons of other jobs including but not limited to: Answering emails, running, writer Kveller.com, cleans her own house,  online interviews, speaking engagements,  stem education for young girls.

Does Mayim take yoga?

Mayim is not a yoga person “because it involves being still” (my kinda girl!)

Do you work out with your kids?

Takes walks with them, sometimes jogs with them too! (love!)

I was able to get a picture with Mayim, but I apologize for the INSANE close range, she was in a rush, and I really wanted a pic with one of my favorite girls on TV! (I apologize for any nose hair sightings)

Mayim’s Vegan Table is now available in stores and online. I can’t wait to try the recipes!

While she’s an actress with a PhD in neuroscience, at the end of the day Mayim Bialik is a mom, one who knows what it’s like to be a busy parent with little time to spend in the kitchen. She shares the concerns of parents everywhere: when it comes to nutrition and feeding your family, you want healthy meals, but also food that everyone—kids and parents—can enjoy, and a balanced lifestyle that’s inexpensive and fuss-free. Not only does Mayim’s Vegan Table share more than 100 easy plant-based recipes for dishes that are as good to eat as they are good for you, but Mayim has also teamed up with pediatrician Jay Gordon to offer:

  • Basic nutritional information about a plant-based diet
  • The real deal on raising kids on a plant-based diet (myths and misperceptions, debunked)
  • Vegan family essentials (including a list of what to always keep in the pantry)
  • Tips and strategies for easy meal planning and healthy eating out

What was your  favorite Mayim fact? Have you ever tried vegan food? Are you a fan of The big bang theory?

I heard her interviewed on Howard Stern and she was awesome!! I love how down to earth she is and how she’s really just herself with no apologies. I don’t eat vegan but I love what she has to say so I just might buy this book. So cool that you were able to meet her and sit down to “chat.” And, did I read that right? She only works on the TV show 3 days a week from 9-3??? Seriously?

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 9:20 pm

I know its the best schedule EVER. Everyone in the room pretty much gasped! LOL

Janine March 3, 2014 - 7:22 am

So jealous you got to meet Mayim and she is still one of my favorites from back in the day when she was on Blossom and love her on Big Bang Theory now, too. Also a cute photo of you two at the end and will have to look for her cook book now!! 🙂

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 9:19 pm

She is pretty awesome 🙂 I totally want to hang with her now!

Michelle March 3, 2014 - 8:13 am

How cool! I remember when she was on Blossom! As you know I don’t really watch tv much now, but I do like the Big Bang Theory…it’s one of my kids favorites so it is on in the house, which means I see it and I find it really funny. I love that you were able to meet her and great picture!

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:58 pm

Thanks Michelle, Mayim is awesome, and is totally a friend in my head now haha

Kimberly (Manifest Yourself) March 3, 2014 - 9:28 am

I’ve never tried anything that was vegan, on purpose, but I have always been curious!

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:57 pm

it was surprisingly yummy. It totally reversed my thinking.

She has always seemed really delightful to me, and I have been a fan since Blossom! Super fun! :)-Ashley

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:56 pm

Me too Ashley!

Tamara March 3, 2014 - 1:40 pm

Awesome, Nellie! We got a gift card to a very fancy vegan restaurant in San Francisco for our wedding, and we had a blast there! So many transforming dishes.
And Mayim (I can’t not call her Blossom in my head. I am horrid) worked with a writer friend of mine here. She’s awesome!

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:54 pm

She has a really great personality!

Kim March 3, 2014 - 3:11 pm

Wow – an actress, PhD in neuroscience, cookbook author and a MOM? Amazing! I will have to look at her book – I love a good cookbook!

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:54 pm

me too I have WAY too many!

FitBritt March 3, 2014 - 6:27 pm

How do I get this 9-3, 3x per week job, off April to August!? Sign me up now! Actually this is really cool! It must have been such a fun event! I love hearing about these kinds of things. I totally love eating vegan meals occasionally even though I’m not vegan.

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:51 pm

I know! everyone was super jelly 🙂 She said thats why everyone wants a sitcom, the hours are grand!

Leslie March 3, 2014 - 9:44 pm

Eeek! I would be so nervous meeting Mayim! That, and it’s so weird to see her in nice clothes for the first time in a decade (BBT nut over here). We’re not vegan, but we’re open to trying new things. If you get the cookbook, you have to let us know how the recipes are!

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:48 pm

The clothes they dress her in are so dowdy! I guess that’s her character though 🙂

Cam March 4, 2014 - 1:23 am

I go back and forth with the idea of being a vegetarian. Honestly, meat is starting to gross me out. This book sounds like something I could totally get into. My husband on the other hand…

When I look at Mayim, I just see Blossom! 🙂

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:46 pm

I know right? She is just too cute—20 odd years later!

Alison March 4, 2014 - 2:58 pm

How very cool, Nellie! I’ve always been a fan of Mayim. Good for her for maintaining a sane schedule (freezing meals, cleaning her own home!) and not succumbing to Hollywood hype. Love the pic with her and you! I’m not vegan, but I’m heading that way.

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:44 pm

She is a class act Alison!

Ilene March 4, 2014 - 10:03 pm

Awesome! I am a vegetarian and sometimes fully vegan. It comes and it goes. When vegan recipes are prepared with a little care, they can be completely awesome. I bet there’s great stuff in this recipe book!

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:43 pm

It is very interesting, so many unheard of ingredients! I am willing to try anything 🙂

Carla March 8, 2014 - 10:27 am

I love that Mayam seems so down to earth and not over the top. I’ve never seen her in pics with hideously expensive clothes or outrageous fashions. Honestly, she seems like just a regular gal that happens to be a successful actress. It makes me like her more.

Nellie March 8, 2014 - 8:40 pm

She is awesome. I felt like I knew her in a past life or something. Her personality is so refreshing!
