Size 16 Model Ashley Graham Stuns On Cover Of Sports Illustrated

by Nellie

Sports Illustrated is one of my favorite magazines in the world.  More and more sports magazines are continually highlight super strong body types (that are not considered “athletic”) let us not forget the ESPN Mag Body Issue including the incredible feature in Amanda Bingson that I fell in love with last summer.

This time Sports Illustrated took it a step further. One of the most coveted issues of the year is the swimsuit issue. (side note: as a teenager I had a subscription to SI and honestly this was my least favorite issue–but I get it, the demographic is largely male so I had to deal)

The swimsuit issue is usually graced by a very stunning, size zero model in a very uh, revealing swimsuit with sand and water everywhere creating a super sexy look.

This year’s swimsuit issue is drastically different when it comes to body figure but is not at all different when it comes to the sexy factor. It features body positive model Ashley Graham in all of her size 16 glory front and center of the iconic magazine. Graham, who has been modeling for years with top agencies such a Ford even created own lingerie line for curvy women. Last year she made headlines for simply being in an ad in the magazine. Sports Illustrated must have saw the potential because they brought her back to take the cover.

Graham gracing the cover of the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated is a big deal. For me personally who never even considered that a woman who wasn’t rail thin could grace the cover of such a prestigious magazine. This is another step in the right direction to make all bodies be recognized as normal and beautiful! Thank you Sports Illustrated for not only being a fantastic, thought provoking magazine that continues to break barriers for women of all sizes.

I did see and, of course, I was excited to see Ronda Rousey on one of the covers but I saw this too and thought YES they are finally getting it! Just the fact that they have THREE models this year instead of the one waif is huge progress. Go SI!

This is absolutely awesome and my hats off to Sports Illustrated for this and more this past year. Thanks for sharing here. Nellie and gave me a whole new level of respect for this magazine.

I didn’t see it but I love it. Stunning photography.
It’s nice that my daughter may not have to grow up staring at size 0 models only. I know I’ve always been slim, but even I’ve never been a size 0 and I can’t imagine that models should only come in one size. There should be.. 16 sizes. Or more! Much more.

She is stunning and has a great, flat stomach, waist and no cellulite showing, besides a gorgeous face with a great bone structure… but yes, it’s an awesome change from the size 0 or 4 at the most with athletic bods. Unfortunately hardly anyone size 16 looks like that, except with a big belly, hanging, cellulite you can see a mile away and rolls. Women like this model are rare more so then the skinny.
Thanks for sharing.

Wow! This is groundbreaking and I’m excited for where this might take the industry. Ashley is beautiful!

She looked awesome and I am glad they are changing things up. I think people want to see whats real more and more these days.

She looks amazing and I think it’s a step in the right direction to have her on the cover. Now, the idea is a swimsuit issue just for the sake of a bunch of models in very little clothing…that might be a post for you another time! (And by the way my husband totally shared an article about this cover on FB. He’s a fan.)

Yes, yes, yes! Could not agree more. I actually just read the SI issue last night, and had the same thought.. I was so glad to see Ashley Graham throughout the issue and thought that she looked beautiful! The media has been taking steps in the right direction in terms of showcasing different body types, and I think that it can only improve the body image issues that so many women and young girls have. It’s great!

That woman is gorgeous. I don’t care what size she is. Not all women have the structure to be 110 pounds sopping wet. Yay SI for embracing all body shapes!
