I go through weird phases when it comes to my birthday. Some years I’m like let’s do a huge celebration other years I’m literally hiding under my covers because I can’t deal.
I’ve never been a birthday person–like I’ve never been the type to notify people six months in advance that my birthday was coming–in fact I like to keep it secret because honestly I am horrible at remembering other people’s birthdays. Like horrendous. I may have lost a friend or two over it (not confirmed but still quite the possibility!).
This year I wanted to dance. I wanted to eat good food. I wanted to celebrate my 33 years on earth because there has been a lot of sad news lately and I just wanted to celebrate with people that I love to pieces.
I invited a lot of folks (including lots of folks that I knew would automatically say no or commit but not quite make it). It’s always so tricky with inviting people over and over but I figured let me make them feel special by at least extending the offer.
Never did I expect sixteen (!!) peeps to show up and show me sooo much love all night. But let me back up to the beginning of the night.
We would be having dinner at Dinosaur BBQ, a crazy popular bbq joint in park slope Brooklyn. While I was on my way in the Uber I started getting last minute cancellations left and right. This was expected but it still stung a bit. I was freaking out–but then I saw my best friends face and it was all okay.
We all ordered pretty quickly because the wait had been over an hour. I ended up getting a ¼ rack of ribs with French fries and coleslaw. It was wayyyyyy better than I thought it would be! The meat fell off the bone so delishiously I was almost sad I didn’t get a ½ rack! The cole slaw was good and so were the French fries but those ribs–ohmygah.

not very sexy but tasted so good!
Once we figured out the bill, most of us headed over to littlefield that hosts a retro reggae night every first Saturday. We met another four ladies there including my amazing blogger wives Scherrie and Monica.

the flash was really, really bright lol
We cut the cake and danced the night away.
I even took a selfie in the bathroom because the lighting was so fun!
There was so much singing and laughing before you knew it–it was 3am!
I split an Uber with my girlfriend and was home in 25 minutes.
I had a really amazing time and it taught me so much about worrying about who isn’t in the room vs. enjoying those who took the time to celebrate with me. It really was an unforgettable birthday…maybe I’ll do it again next year?? 🙂

and I LOVED what you said about how you know your friends had so so so many other things they could have done and yet they chose to make time for YOU YOU YOU.
So true and really made me smile.
All of it
AH!! Love this so much and so glad you celebrated this year so BIG!!! I feel you on the “friends” who cancel last minute (side eye) but look at all who SHOWED UP and I’m sure show up in real life too, right??
And the sequin skirt? LOVE!!!
Cannot wait to give you a big birthday hug on Saturday 🙂
Aw, glad you had so much fun and honestly if anyone deserved to celebrate their birthday in style, it is you! Totally deserved this and again just so happy that it was a fun evening 😉
Happy Belated Birthday to ya! I do milestone birthdays. My son is about to be 10 so I will do something for him this year big but mostly birthdays are low key. I give the kids one thing they want and then take them someplace to eat that they pick out. I don’t know many kids and I can’t fanthom spending money on a huge birthday party but for adults…yaassss.
I’m always surprised that we’re only two years apart. I don’t know why! You are a magnificent 33 and for some reason, I thought you were 31. Which means that we’ve “known” each other for awhile!
I read about your night on FB and I realized I need a night like that!
P.S. I’ll be in Brooklyn for the first weekend of April! Sunday night wedding at the Liberty Warehouse and we have a hotel near the bridge.
I know exactly which hotel! 🙂 I will have to meet up with you even for a quick (hopefully not cold walk on the bridge) Sound good?
Perfect! I believe we’re staying Saturday through Monday. Cool!
So glad you had such a fun birthday!! You look gorgeous and happy as usual. 🙂 I never went to Dinosaur but we actually gave our friend (who looked after Roman while I was having Baby T) a gift certificate there. It’s his favorite place!
So glad your birthday was a blast. I’m usually very low key when it comes to birthday. But you made a good point about sadness so I think i need celebrate as many good things as possible.
Birthdays are so fun!!! Happy belated Birthday!!! Glad you got out and enjoyed yourself!
Happy belated birthday……it looks like you had an amazing time.
Happy belated birthday! Glad you had a fun time =)
Oh, Nellie! I feel so bad having missed your birthday. Well, I know it’s very belated, but I wish you all the best for the next year and even beyond that. It looks like you celebrated properly, and I hope you keep celebrating your birthdays for several years to come!
