Weekly Wednesday Workout: Dead Lifts
Today we are working on the hammies!

I love this move, but honestly I never see a lot of women doing it at the gym. I really don’t see a lot of women strength training in the gym out side of the machines, but this is a really great move for us. This move is especially great for runners because those quads get so much love and development and the hamstrings barely get any love. Personally, I use 40lb barbells when doing dead lifts, but you can use any weight or none at all. This is great for the hamstrings as well as the lower back. Pay close attention to the form, this is a perfect way to do it without injuring yourself!

I have been doing single lead deadlifts with light weights or no weights to help with strength and balance. They are great!
NICE! I love to see my girls lifting!!
This is timely for me as I just started incorporating more single leg dead lifts into my cross training. My coach found an imbalance in that tiny muscle in your butt (gluteus minimus) that is crucial to runners!! Although I have to say that their are a lot of girls lifting heavy weights at my gym and deadliest abound! Love it 🙂
you have got an awesome coach, I am convinced! I need to come to your gym!! I am ALWAYS the only girl!! what gives?!
Not going to lie, never tried this in recent years, but now that you mentioned it here, may need to try them again. Thanks for sharing Nellie and have a great Wednesday now!! 🙂
you are welcome Janine!
The difficulty of the exercise is clearly in the name, right?! 😉 My trainer used to make me do these and I did in fact want to die! But a great workout!-Ashley
smart trainer! 🙂
This is by far one of my favorite moves at the gym. There is a machine I use occasionally too… but I have no idea what it’s called. I just know it helps me with my form when I use the machine vs free weights.
I am very curious about this machine!
40 lb barbells!! Holy moly! You are so strong!
lol thanks I do love my lifting!
Dead lifts are one of my favorite moves ever!! Best way to work the high hamstring butt area!!!
Yes, me too Kim!
They don’t look as hard as they really are, right?
I bet they’re very hard!
They actually aren’t that bad! I have put up way worse in the past 😉
My hammies need all the love they can get. Along with some stretching! Love this move!
Yes, I definitely need to work on my hammies too!
The Jari Love DVD I do has a whole track that’s basically a variation on deadlifts, and it’s my favorite track of all of them. You’re making me wish that I had some time to go do them now! Though I’m nowhere near 40lbs with it. You’re definitely one strong lady!
I think I need this DVD 🙂
I do dead lifts every time I do strength training now. I try to squeeze my glutes when I come up to give them a workout too.
Yes! perfect way to improve the exercise!
Nellie, can it be done effectively with free weights (dumbbells)?
definitely!! I do them all the time with free weights!
Dead lifts are one of my favorite. With or with out weights. Women are shy, confused, intimidated but the weight section. I know I can be. And sometimes I just feel like everyone is watching me,,,in either a judgmental or fresh way.
YES omg I totally know that feeling!! But I just try to push past it. So funny that you mention that because it is SO true.
Yes I have heard that complaint so many times and I hope I can help to break it, but since fit is the new thin, I think women are getting it.
Deadlifts are my favorites!!!
[…] Fortunately since I was so familiar with the classes thanks to Joi, I knew exactly what to expect. I knew I’d be lifting a lot, with different weights and mostly with a barbell. We hit every single part of the body including the hamstrings (hello dead lifts!). […]
