Happy Friday Friends!!
It’s been a good week. Crazy, crazy hot in NYC and the rest of the east coast…expected to get even hotter today and well Saturday and Sunday isn’t going to be much more fun either. Are these the dog days of summer?? Seems like it’s happening a bit later this year.
I spent the week mostly upping my business skills and getting to know the world of small business technicalities from free resources offered in the city. There is SO MUCH TO LEARN. Seriously, it’s like my head is going to explode from all of the new information. I have to-do notes on top of to-do notes. The great thing is that I did a lot of work over on the BAM Digital Media website by adding blog posts and being super active on a platform that was collecting dust for me…LinkedIn. I am coming up on ONE month since I quit my full time job and I will be giving you guys a much requested update on what is happening behind the scenes and how I’m adjusting. Marathon Training – Week 8
12 Weeks Until The TCS NYC Marathon!
I am happy to say that marathon training has been kind to me so far. There has been plenty of runs that I did not want to do, or plenty that were crazy slow but overall I am enjoying my marathon training experience way more than I was last year. I honestly think that the sudden uptick in miles last year caused a lot of discouragement but since I have been through it before it is a bit easier.
Last weekend I got up insanely early (for a Saturday) and headed to the Brooklyn Bridge to walk the length of the bridge (a bit over a mile) and start the run all the way across then start running at the base where Summer Streets began. The plan was to run 8 miles…and after 2 I was ready to give up! I had my running buddy Yonique with me, and I’m pretty sure that was the only way I made it through. It was all kinds of humid, hot, rainy, and just yucky swampy weather. You all know that I am a weather wimp already so this was NO fun! We made it through by stopping for constant water breaks and treated ourselves by stopping at the best Farmers Market in NYC afterwards.
Week 7 Miles: 20
Monday: I got a nice start to the week, I ran 5 miles, although it was way slower than I’d liked. I felt off for some reason–my energy levels were super low there for it felt like the longest 5 miles of my life.
Wednesday: I had 4 miles planned for Tuesday but again, felt even worse than the day before, so I slept in. Wednesday I felt a ton better so I ran the 5 miles as scheduled.
This is where things are getting a bit tricky. I am actually in charge of my own children again (at least for the next 3 weeks) and this is making it harder and harder to complete training runs. I have a very busy Saturday and Sunday ahead so I REALLY hope I can get my long run in properly. If not, I’ll have to make up the miles next week, hopefully with the help of a babysitter!
Runner Safety (again)
I know I spoke last week about being safe while you run, but I saw a really good self defense segment on my local news that really made me think twice about how to react if I am ever attacked on a run. Simple movements could be the difference between life and death. Check out this great YouTube video that describes some of the escape techniques:
