Nuna’s Grand Reveal Of New Carseat Line Was Totally Worth The Wait

A few weeks ago I was invited to the grand reveal of Nuna’s new car seat line. If you haven’t heard of Nuna they are a high end baby/child gear manufacturer. I have never been to a grand reveal before so I was super excited to see what they had in store for us!

Nuna Carseat Reveal-9704

The event was held at the Ink48 Hotel on the west side. It was actually one of the hottest days ever but somehow I was able to catch a nice and cool uber pool to the event (best $5 spent for events during rush hour!).

When I got to the beautiful rooftop space, there were products but the items were fully covered by black sheets, the suspense was tough to handle, but finally when all was revealed, it was kind of perfect.

This post is presented in partnership with SheSpeaks/P&G

The other day I couldn’t find my memory card. I knew I put it in my purse but I checked all the small pockets and I couldn’t find it. I found a ton of other things like a zillion lipsticks, enough change to purchase a refrigerator and of course, emergency snacks.

Venus-9778

I came to the crushing reality that I would have to dump my purse, which would in fact force me to clean out all the “mess” in there. Once everything was dumped the memory card surfaced but I was still was left with the mess that I had left to clean.

This made me consider what I have to carry around in my purse at all times, this includes my must have beauty items like a handy lotion, eye liner, the lipsticks I mentioned earlier and of course my Venus razor.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I have walked out the door in a rush only to realize that my legs were gorilla-like in nature. The great thing about having a Venus razor on hand is that you can take care of that in a bathroom (or under your desk) as you need.

Venus-9776

What I LOVE about the razor is that it is perfect for the multi-tasker like myself. Not only can I shave on the go, but because there is no shaving cream needed I can shave without worry.

Venus-9781

There are three types of the Venus razors, which one is right for you?

  • Choose Your Smooth: Every girl is unique – from her personality to her lifestyle to the way she carries herself. Venus created Choose Your Smooth – a way to help shoppers choose the right razor for their lifestyle. They matched three razors (Venus Swirl, Venus & Olay, Venus Disposable) with a personality based on the razor features.
    • The Venus Swirl is for the Perfectionist because it leaves your legs flawlessly smooth! It has 5 contour blades and Flexiball technology that contours to every curve for flawless skin.
    • The Venus & Olay razor is for the Multitasker because it moisturizes as you shave – no need for shave cream!  It has 5 blades and Olay Moisture Bars that release skin conditioners to help lock in skin’s moisture for less dryness.
    • The Venus Disposable is for the On-The-Go-Girl because it’s perfectly suited for the active lifestyle. Just shave, then toss it out – no need to find replacement razors! Venus Disposables give a close shave for sensitive skin and has 3 blades surrounded by soft, protective cushions.  The pivoting rounded head fits easily into hard-to-shave areas.

Venus-9786

The Venus razors are all available at Walmart.

How To Find Your Personal Fitness Identity

It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day onslaught of fitness articles and images that tell us why we should be running/swimming/cross fitting—you name it.

Last weekend I had a couple of great conversations at Fitbloggin—more to come on that later—and we were talking about the effects of social media on normal people. When I say “normal” I mean the people who like to workout but may feel pressured by images on social media to be the “fastest runner” or the one who wakes up the earliest to workout.

Here’s the thing. Your fitness identity must be dictated by YOU and only you. These are some easy and practical ways to identify your journey and not get caught up in the social media fitness jungle.

What is your personal fitness identity?

Be Real With Yourself

Are you running every day because your favorite fitness people are doing it? Because that person has a 50K Instagram following? Look at your why before you make the choice to do that thing—is it influenced by how you think your Facebook friends will react? Or are you doing the fitness activity for you.

What Works For You

For me personally, I know I am not a fan of running on back to back days unless absolutely necessary. I know this doesn’t work for me personally. However, because I don’t like running on back to back days, it doesn’t mean that I don’t workout on alternate days. I know I need to hit the weights once a week. For you it might be cardio dance, or crossfit. Figure out what makes your heart smile for fitness and do it often.

Identify Your Weaknesses

There is nothing quite like being self aware. I know that if I don’t scoot out the door when my husband takes my kids to camp, there is a strong likely hood that I will talk myself out of going to the gym. I prepare my workout clothes from the night before because something as simple as not having my clothes ready could throw me all the way off. What is it that deters you from getting up and getting going? Is it Netflix? Is it getting too busy with housework? Figure out what the road block is and figure out ways to make it a non-issue.

Identify Your Strengths

Can you get up for a run everyday without fail? Can you do yoga every other day without fail? Do you have a SoulCycle class that you simply can’t miss every week? Build on that. I am a strong believer that there is SOMETHING for every person. I’ve met people who think Zumba is the end all for fitness, then there are other people who live to swim like a fish. Whatever your strength is, hold on closely to that because that will be the one thing that keeps you anchored when you lose the motivation.

Friday Fitness (1)

As you are reading this I am galavanting in the Midwest for the first time! Fitbloggin has taken me east, west, south, west again and now midwest. I am excited to attend and present on how to be a consistent blogger. Full recap to come!

Thank you.

I was completely overwhelmed with the response to my post on Monday. I had been struggling with working at my former employer for a little while and I really couldn’t say much here until I had officially cut ties.

Things have been a lot better since. I’ve gotten a bunch of opportunities, I’ve landed my first official clients for BAM Digital and finally–I’m able to sleep again. I didn’t realize how bad my sleep life was until I quit. No more waking up at 2 am and not being able to fall back asleep. I now move at my own time, I work really hard all day but it’s ok because I love it.

I’m attending small business classes and learning that there is a TON that I have to learn about running my own business but I am the biggest sponge waiting eagerly to soak up all the knowledge.

It’s literally a new me.

One thing this life has allowed me is more gym time! So check out my fitness week, because it’s more than I’ve done in months!!

Marathon Training Week 5

Since my blink fitness is legit just a 5 minute walk from my house, it’s easy to get my workout on as soon as the kids are gone. I workout at about 7:15am everyday and I’m back with enough time to shower, eat and begin my workday.

workoutroundup

Monday: 4 miles. My legs were fresh from a lack of a long run on Saturday so it was a good run.

IMG_9081

Tuesday: Weights day!! I switched it up this time though. 20 minutes on the elliptical for a warm up. Then I did 100 kettlebell swings, pull-ups of the TRX and heavy ropes (so hard!). Let’s just say I was wiped!!

Instagram Photo

Wednesday: 4.5 miles. Started off with super lead legs and so sore from the day before but by mile 2 I felt normal again.

Instagram Photo

Thursday: I took a rest because everything hurt plus I knew I had a long day of travel ahead.

Friday: Miscellaneous workouts at Fitbloggin

Saturday: Miscellaneous workouts including teaching 2 songs at the annual Zumba fest!

Off to #Fitbloggin, a Packed #Workout Week, a HUGE Thank you and more for #FridayFitness!

Yoga Routines For Beginners

Want to try Yoga but you have no idea where to start? Check out these 5 Yoga routines that will make you comfortable in no time!

I have a super strong love hate relationship with yoga. I am not the most flexible person in the world so when I attend a yoga class I am likely to be the one giving the instructor the side eye that is clearly transmitting “that pose is NOT going to happen today”. I often envy my friends that are so good at yoga because I am a person who loves to constantly move. Yoga forces me to stay still and breathe. Today I am sharing 5 Yoga Routines For Beginners.

Although I went through a hot yoga obsession about 3 years ago, my yoga practice is quite inconsistent. One thing that I know for sure is that whenever I DO practice, I feel like a million bucks and my body is so thankful for the work. Funny enough, my favorite pose is not shavasana, it’s actually the pigeon pose. The actual pose is quite painful for me because I run a lot and sit a lot, so releasing the tension from my hips feels incredible.

Yoga Routines For Beginners

As much as I know that I need yoga in my life you would think that I would practice more often. I don’t. I decided to create a list for the busy mom that may not have time for a yoga class but maybe have small pockets of the day to get your yoga on at home. I can definitely confirm that I sleep WAY better when I stretch–even if it’s for just a couple of minutes!!

Essential tools that you need for back to school 2016! From clothes to snacks, I got you covered!

Can you believe that Back To School 2016 is creeping up on us at an astonishing rate? It seems like it was only a few hours ago we were doing a happy summer dance and just like that school is looming upon us once again. Is there a special clock that goes fast in the summer and slows all the way down in the winter?

Momtrends Back To School 2016

Every year, I have been lucky enough to attend the Momtrends Back To School event–it is one of my favorites of the year because the brands are always super relevant to me (and you!) and all the products makes our job as a mom much easier.

Yoobi

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9500

What is Yoobi? Yoobi, pronounced “you-be,” means “one for you, one for me.” For every Yoobi item purchased, a Yoobi item will be donated to a classroom in need, right here in the U.S. What I loved about the Yoobi was the vibrant colors and designs! I was ALWAYS into really cool stationary as a kid (still as an adult) and these are gorgeous! Yoobi is sold online and exclusively in Target stores, so you know when you purchase these, you are helping another classroom too…pretty cool right?

Nalgene’s Lunch Box Buddy

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9485

I am so obsessed with these lunch boxes, for two reasons: 1) It comes with an ice pack and this is very soothing for my husband who believes that everything expires in 2 hours or less when not refrigerated. and 2) The neoprene sleeve keeps the lunch from falling out all over the place.

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9486

Wall Pops

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9542

Peel and Stick Wallpaper is pretty much the coolest way to update a room without much hassle! Now Wall Pops has a dry erase line (yes, please) that can be easily applied and removed from a wall. Perfect for families with busy schedules! Most of all I am kinda obsessed with this wall decal of the world.

Joules

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9527

I may have spent a little bit too much time at this booth because the clothes were just the cutest!! From the boots to the clothes (like the boys shirt that has an open lion mouth that says ‘ROAR’) they had the perfect back to school 2016 wardrobe picks!

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9528 Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9521

Ella’s Kitchen

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9550

I didn’t get to taste a sample of these organic baby/kid friendly products while I was there but, there was a box of the snacks in the bag when I got home and my boys were in love immediately! I don’t even have any left :) I clearly need to get more as these are a great snack to send with them as they go to school.

Keen Kids

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9539

Keen Kids footwear was in the building and they had the cutest shoes for kids. They are not only stylish but super durable as well.

Mabel’s Labels

Momtrends Back To School 2016 Cool Tools-9491

I am a lifelong fan of Mabel’s Labels and I use them EVERY year because Josh doesn’t seem to come back with all his clothing and I end up at the lost and found searching for sweaters/hats/you name it at his school. The brand has a new book that saves all the artwork and papers for you so they don’t end up everywhere around the house (or is that just me??).

I left a very cushy, high paying job at a rising company to pursue my dreams.

My Lord.

Remember when I was struggling with something that seemed impossible to overcome? It was my job. I was terrified to leave (hello, I had only been there a few months compared to 9 years at my old place!) but I knew something had to change.

I did my best to ignore the pulling feeling and settled in for the long haul. It wasn’t even a few months later before the suffocating feeling came back. It was a fantastic job–they fed me everyday–the benefits were great and the paycheck allowed me to do pretty much anything I wanted. Yet. The literal feeling of not being able to breathe would come when my kids would beg me to chaperone a trip and I had to tell them that mommy didn’t have anymore “days”. Or when a once in a lifetime blogging opportunity comes up and you have to say no because you don’t want to be penalized later in the year by your job for taking so many days off.

I started saving all of my blogging income. Every dime. The funds kept growing and the opportunities started multiplying. I didn’t know what the plan was but I kept going with it.

My grandmother died in April. I was sitting in the funeral listening to my mom struggle through her obituary. She mentioned that one of the happiest days of my grandmother’s life was when she retired from her back breaking job of being a room attendant at a hotel. It was at that moment when something shattered inside of me. I don’t want to spend my life waiting for my job to free me. I want to do something that I love. This blog is my third child and it brings me so much joy. The new experiences, the event coverage, the complete freedom of creativity. Blogging allows me to wake up with a new canvas to paint on everyday.

I was spending 12 hours a day between traveling and the actual workday–6:30 am to 6:30pm working and commuting. Then I come home and work for HOURS on the blog–because I love it.

Something had to give.

The Decision

My husband noticed how discouraged I was coming home everyday. I was miserable. I was tired of seeing my kids for 90 minutes a day. Tired of asking my mom what’s going on with my own children. Tired of feeling so much pressure to be a perfect employee when even I knew it was impossible. I couldn’t stay late to finish projects, but everyone else could.

So the hubby and I had many, many, many conversations about HOW I could leave my job and have us not end up homeless since my paycheck is responsible for our Brooklyn mortgage. Like epic conversations–ones that ended in pure raw excitement and ones that ended in tears of absolute fear. I was still saving money. We decided that if I could save 6 months mortgage, I could quit. We shook on it.

The Windfall

I was listening to The Friend Zone Podcast (one of my FAVORITE podcasts in the world) and one of the hosts Fran, talked about how getting fired was one of the best things that ever happened to her. Even though it was a complete shock and she was severely embarrassed, it opened a ton of doors for her.

“Sometimes if you don’t pay attention to the alert system, it will just get louder and louder until something happens with bad consequences. If something doesn’t feel right your best bet is to let it go as soon as you can” Fran, TheFriendZone Podcast

The universe heard me loud and clear and just like that magic started happening. We got a tax refund about 4x what we thought it would be. I got a notification from the state secretary that they had 2 (large!) checks for me from 2003. The contracts came rapid fire. The campaigns landed square in my inbox. My mom dropped off a generous check, unsolicited, just to support my dreams.

I now have a year+ of mortgage saved.

The Plan

Instagram Photo

I plan to continue to pour my heart into this blog because that is where my joy is. There might be more commercials but there will always be a 80% non sponsored posts ratio here.

I have also decided to start a business! Last year, my mom asked for my help in creating a website and a Yelp page for her daycare. She instantly saw an uptick in business. I started researching local businesses in my area and was stunned to see that barely any of them have a social media presence. So I registered and incorporated BAM Digital Media LLC (still under construction!), which will be providing simple social media solutions for small businesses.

I am a CEO y’all.

IMG_9077

The Exit

Although I gave my job 3 weeks notice and I’ve known for another 2 months the last day was way harder than expected. Somehow my coworkers crawled up in my heart, took residence and became impossible to evict. It was emotional, for sure, but I am so happy that we crossed paths.

It’s Time

Now it’s time to work my entire ass off to build my business and expand the blog. It’s up to me now. For the first time in my life I will be creating my own way of living. It’s SO scary. Almost equally as exhilarating.

But most of all, it will be me.

Have you ever made a life decision that had you shaking in your boots?!

What’s up everybody?!

How was your week?

The week literally flew by for me as I attended 6 events in 4 days. Coincidentally this is the week my mom decided to go to Jamaica for a real nice long week vacation. My mom is a HUGE help with my kids so when she is not here—all heck breaks loose! I am thankful for my sister in law that picked up the kids for me and my aunt who helped shuffle them around. Let’s just say that a lot of money was spent this week on Ubers and the like to compensate for my supermom being out of town!

But It’s Friday and we *I* survived!!

workoutroundup

On Monday I did something I never do on a Monday. I skipped a workout. I totally went all the way against the “nevermissamonday” grain. I don’t know why but I simply wasn’t feeling it. I couldn’t get myself together enough to really make a push and get on the treadmill at lunch. So I went out with my girlfriends and it was actually pretty fun. I tend to miss out a LOT on the social scene at work because 80% of my lunches are spent at the gym training. #WorkingMomStruggles

On Tuesday I made my way to the gym during “runch” and ran a pretty steady 3 miles. The training plan calls for 4 miles but—time constraints make that impossible (I need to get faster!!). The run was pretty great and really sweaty, I’m beginning to realize it doesn’t matter how air conditioned the gym is—if it’s super humid outside, it WILL be super humid inside too.

Back at SoulCycle

IMG_8994

Wednesday I was invited to a fun SoulCycle spin class for Ocean Spray. You guys know how much I love SoulCycle, but this particular instructor kicked my tail. It was so bad at one point I kept checking my TomTom every 5 minutes to see if it was over. Legs were super shaky afterwards and I was a sweaty mess, but it was nice to cross train at such a high intensity. Spinning is still one of my favorite mistresses next to running. My first love will always be strength training.

Thursday it took everything I had to get up and go run my 3 miles. I was exhausted from running all over the city for the entire week, and really sore from SoulCycle. I got it done however, at a significantly slower pace—but she got done!

fuel

Food intake has been very interesting this week—I’ve been kinda of obsessed with noosa yogurts ever since I attended their sweet heat event last month. They are just SO good. Not terrible calorie wise but they taste so decadent that it feels like you are cheating horribly on your diet!

IMG_9027

I’ve been eating bites here and there at events, and not tracking AT ALL. What is really good though is that I have noticed a huge change in some clothes that used to be super tight, fitting perfectly now. I am SO aware of not wanting to gain any weight during this training so I think that helps!! Plus a few of my friends have mentioned that I am on the slimmer side, so I’ll just ride with that :)

Life Update

I know I have been hinting at a huge shift in my life for the past couple of weeks. I will finally be sharing all the details with all of you on Monday morning. It’s been a LONG time coming and I’m insanely excited to finally share how I’ve flipped my world upside down in the interest of my happiness.

Song Of The Week

Is there a Sia song that I don’t love? I think I love this one even more because there is a Jamaican artist, and you know I always have to represent for my people!

How was your fitness and health week? Any fun plans for the weekend? Any guesses on what my big news in?

New LeapFrog LeapStart is the Perfect On The Go Learning Tool!

Being the daughter of an educator (aka a TK= Teacher’s Kid) there was always extra pressure on me to do well in school, grasp concepts early and always continually learn. My mom instilled in me since I was a baby that learning really never ends. Now that her beloved grandchildren are in school I have adapted the same lessons with them.

The reason why I love LeapFrog products is because they always find a new way to make learning fun. As entertaining as it is to watch mindless cartoons, I’d rather have them actively learning all the time.

LeapStart

Leapfrog sent us two new LeapStarts to review (and thank goodness because they were in love with it right away and didn’t have to fight to “share”). They were also kind enough to send us a plethora of “books” to use. As much as we love our Epic tablet and LeapPad Platinum tablets I was excited that the toy was a combination of book and interaction, with no screens.

The boys were crazy excited to try out their new LeapStart, especially Josh who goes into “YouTube Mode” with a fun explanation and an even funnier voice. I have no idea where he gets it from!

As you can see, they got the hang of it right away. They play with them daily and I feel at ease knowing that not only are they having fun, they are learning too!

Avoiding Snack Pitfalls with Pure Protein Crunch!

I’ve always had my issues with snacking. Either I do too much of it or I don’t do it at all. One of my major problems with mainstream “snacks” is that if are not fruit or vegetables they usually don’t have any nutritional value. They are full of fillers and all kinds of ingredients to make you feel full but really don’t make much of a nutritional impact.

Pure Protein Crunch

Pure Protein Crunch-9470

Since I was introduced to the Pure Protein Crunch bites a few months ago, I’ve been low key obsessed. I usually grab a handful right around 3pm when I am in the office—since I workout most days at lunch, the boost of protein is exactly what I need especially after a hard strength training workout.

What I like about them is that they are small enough to fulfill my snack cravings but not super attention grabbing—for example: some folks that like to bring very, uh, smelly salads into office meetings. I can easily grab my crunch bites from my desk, bring them in with me for a nice treat (maybe even share some, if I’m feeling nice that day) and feel good about my snack choice.

Pre Dinner Hunger Games

This also helps me to not be completely ravenous when I get home from work and start making dinner. If dinner is going to take a while, I find myself reaching for any and everything to eat! By eating the crunch bites at 3pm this helps curb the eventual ravenous feeling I get while making dinner.

The bites are also really great to have on hand when we go out on the weekends. The boys have swim lessons and as much as we try to make sure they aren’t hungry before or after, I can guarantee that one of them is going to ask for something to eat. I don’t mind sharing with them, and they love it because they think that they are getting some of mommy’s forbidden candy (especially because the flavor is Double Chocolate). Whatever works!

Check out some really cool tidbits about the Pure Protein Crunch:

Pure Protein® Crunch is a new bite-sized protein snack formulated with 10 grams of protein per serving [featuring soy], 5 grams of sugar and 160 calories or less depending on flavor. Available in two delicious flavors – Double Chocolate and Peanut Butter – these crunchy bites of protein come in single serving pouches (1.20 oz.), making them an easy, fun and convenient snack for energy on the go.

What do you eat for on the go cravings?
