5 Easy Ways To Build Champions In Your Kids Before The End of the Summer!

New Milk Life-1140-1

Summer is quickly coming to an end. I am of the strong belief that the summer arrives crazy fast and disappears even quicker. It is such an amazing time of outside fun, then old man winter comes through and we end up longing for summer once again.

Today I am challenging you to take the time we have left to build some serious champions in our kids by doing some fun physical activities that will not only get them moving but YOU moving as well. Check out these 5 fun ways to get active and build champions in your kids!

*All of these activities are best played outdoors, the more space the better!

5 Easy Ways To Build Champions In Your Kids Before The End of the Summer!

Run Races: Have you ever raced against your kids? Those little things are FAST! I’m pretty sure my 4 year old beats me EVERY time we “race”. He even talks smack too–“Remember that time you told me to race mommy and I beat you?! hahahahaha”

Yes, I remember.

The fun part about running with kids, especially in an open space, is that you can go at full speed too, so I challenge you mamas, run with your kids, get sweaty and enjoy the outdoors without a jacket–while you can!

New Milk Life-1132

Play TAG: When is the last time you played a good hearty game of Tag? My boys tend to play tag around the house, and um it gets a little rowdy. When you are outdoors you can take Tag to the next level by going outside, using trees, benches and really making the kids WORK to catch you!

Morning Yoga: We get up really early in the mornings to get the kids on the bus by 6:40am. As you can imagine, we ALL can get a bit cranky. Lately I’ve been working on deep breathing techniques with my eldest child who is uh, quite spirited. Starting from the beginning of the school year, take 5 minutes for the entire family to stretch and deep breathe to start the day off as zen as possible!

Play Soccer/Kickball: We have a ton of balls around the house, so whenever we go to the park we make sure we grab one. My little guy is the most naturally gifted with coordination skills out of all of us and he LOVES to play soccer. In a wide open field, soccer can be a really fun way to get your exercise in while working on your footwork!

Cycling: Go cycling as a family. My husband doesn’t like to ride bikes AT ALL, it is SO not his thing! It’s not my favorite but I don’t mind it, my little guy likes to ride around his tricycle backwards with no hands and his eyes closed. He LOVES riding his bike. Although I don’t own a personal bike, I borrow my mom’s and take it to the park. The hubby will catch up eventually or hang out while we bike. It’s a nice way to explore the park and chat at the same time. #familybonding

One of the key ways that you can Build Champions is by starting off the day with a great breakfast that includes a serving of milk. The high quality protein gives the kids a pretty great start considering that milk is a nutrient powerhouse. It is super important for me to provide a good balanced breakfast for my boys and I feel good knowing that I can give them milk and help give them a great start to the day!

Here are some of the benefits of Milk:

  • Calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus for supporting healthy bones
  • Protein for building and maintaining lean muscle
  • B vitamins (Riboflavin, B-12 and niacin) for energy
  • Potassium for regulating the balance of fluids in your body
  • Vitamin A for maintaining a healthy immune system

Here Is How You Can Change The Cycle

 IMG_9303

Although I didn’t get to attend Blog Her 2016 in Los Angeles this year, I was still so excited to follow all of the excitement and brands sponsoring the event. One of the awesome sponsors from the event was ChangeTheCycle, a really helpful organization where women who suffer from heavy periods can share their experiences and learn about solutions.

My education

I was in the 4th grade. My teacher and another 4th grade teacher were best friends (at least they seemed that way to me). They sent a permission slip home to our parents that asked if we could all gather during lunch time to have “girl talk”. We would have to bring in cold lunch (Yay! I ate school lunch everyday so cold lunch meant a delicious sandwich from the local bodega) and the girls of the 4th grade class would get together and chat about “girl things”.

I had no idea what this entailed but I joined anyway. Plus it was really nice not to have the boys around!

Our teachers explained to us what would be happening with our bodies in the near future. They talked about periods, body hair, and even hormones. At first it was super uncomfortable to have these kinds of discussions but then we were able to ease into it without much fear. Since everything on my body developed super early (hello sports bra in the 3rd grade) I was all too familiar with what they were teaching. It was SO great to have a safe space to discuss all things that were about to happen as we transitioned into women.

Change The Cycle

The Change The Cycle.com website is  funded and developed by Hologic, Inc. As a leading global healthcare and diagnostics company, we strive to make advances toward greater certainty for our customers by providing them with cutting-edge technology that makes a real difference. We move to narrow the gap between doubt and confidence and work to achieve both incremental and transformational progress to improve patients’ lives.

What I love about the website is that they provide resources for women that suffer from heavy periods, just like my 4th grade teacher provided a resource to me as a child to talk about the changes in my body. On the website you can find a physician, and learn about tools and reasons why you may be suffering. In addition to all of that they provide products and equipment for the following:

  • Mammography and breast biopsy
  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging
  • Radiation treatment for early-stage breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer screening
  • Osteoporosis assessment
  • Preterm birth risk assessment
  • Molecular diagnostic products including human papillomavirus (HPV) testing

Here is some important information that you should know about heavy periods and Change The Cycle:

  • 1 in 5 Women will experience heavy periods in their lifetime
  • Change the Cycle is an online community where women with heavy periods share
  • struggles and find solutions. We strive to raise awareness of heavy periods, its causes,
  • and potential treatment options by sharing content that is both fun and empowering.
  • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) is a gynecological condition marked by heavy,
  • excessive or extended bleeding
  • AUB impacts 10 Million US women each year
  • Heavy Periods disrupt women’s lives physically, socially emotionally
  • At BlogHER’16 Change the Cycle was committed to helping women makeover the conversation about heavy bleeding and to give lip service to AUB, fibroids and polyps with free makeovers and white lipstick
  • Women were able to visit the booth and get their make-up done while having a girl-talk session with OBGYN Dr. Jessica Shepherd.

For more information, to find a physician and to learn more about what you can do about having heavy periods check out ChangeTheCycle.com.

Happy Friday!!

How are y’all?! How was your week? My week was quite a bit insane actually. I did 5 events in three days–I don’t know why I love this life so much–or why I’m wired this way but I absolutely thrive in this insanity.

IMG_9503-1

I have a pretty big announcement coming soon, but you know contracts and all that stuff. What I will say is that it is the biggest thing that has ever happened in my running life! As soon as all the legal stuff is cleared I’m going to scream it from the rooftop. Stay tuned!

I am just about halfway done with marathon training–can you believe it?!

workoutroundup

Monday: I started my week with a (somewhat easy) 4 miles. I didn’t have much time because I had my eldest at home still, so I had to be in the gym at 6am.  I decided to substitute the last mile with some strength training since I’ve been lacking tremendously over the past couple of weeks. So I took the remaining 15 minutes or so to do lunges and squats.

IMG_9489

Tuesday: another 4 miles–not so easy at all. Again I took my 5th mile time to do some lunges, this time with my leg elevated on a bench behind me. I forgot how tough these are! I always sweat like a crazy person when I do this move!!

Wednesday: Yoga with Sound off experience–I knew going into this that I was stiff as a board because I don’t practice yoga nearly as enough as I should.

The sound off experience blows my mind every single time–this was my third experience the first one was with TomTom and the second was the awesome dance class on the rooftop! This was was totally different. The setting was a stunning majestic room in the W Hotel Union Square with incredibly tall ceilings and gorgeous decor.

IMG_9567

We were assigned our headphones and went to work on our mats. The vibe was super chill with relaxing R&B flowing through the headphones the entire time. We even had a LIVE singer join us for the class. Her voice was so perfect and professional that you couldn’t even tell she was in the room unless you had your eyes open. I can’t wait for the next sound off event because for someone like me who gets distracted by noises, having noise canceling headphones is every single thing.

Instagram Photo

This weekend I have 14 miles on deck–I will likely do them on the treadmill because…heat.

How was your fitness and health week? Have you ever taken a silent disco kind of class? Do you yoga often?

With less than a week left for Back To School, I am stuck in between a strong feeling of happiness (yay! Freedom! Not having to feed my children every 6 minutes will be SO great for my productivity!) and pure panic (Yes, I’ve got all of their school supplies but really what I need for them is more clothes, and footwear because my eldest child thinks it’s really hysterical to grow out of his clothes every three months.)

Dick's Sporting Goods Back To School-1143

So when I got the opportunity to partner up with Dick’s Sporting Goods once again, I didn’t hesitate! The selection was so good last time it really was a miracle that I didn’t walk out with a truckload of things.

Dick's Sporting Goods Back To School-1147

This time we took a trip out to Valley Stream Mall. The Dick’s Sporting Goods just opened a few months ago and it’s brand spanking new, plus it’s closer to home just a few exits off the highway. The new store is HUGE and full of all the good stuff.

Dick's Sporting Goods Back To School-1149

The first place we went was to the shoe section. Josh is constantly growing out of his shoes or wearing them down completely so I knew I had to start with him. The first thing we did was measure his foot, then I bought a pair of black and white Under Armour sneakers that were on sale for $35! I jumped all over them because he liked them and I liked them and usually his sneakers are $50 and above. Win!

Dick's Sporting Goods Back To School-1153Dick's Sporting Goods Back To School-1155

Next I took the boys to get some athletic tees for gym and for weekend fun. The tees section had a ton of really cool tees for the boys with all of these fun sayings. I think they are so fun and so do the boys, and the younger one is into it now too since he is finally learning how to read. :) He’s also really into hats these days so he couldn’t leave the store without this one!

Celebrating the Centennial Of The National Parks!

While I am excited to have the kids go back to school, the feeling is a little bit bittersweet because this was the first summer that I got to spend with them day in and day out. We got to attend some fun events together and really made some amazing memories.Find Your Park 100th Birthday National Parks-1196

Earlier this week I took my eldest boy to celebrate the Centennial celebration of our National Parks in the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park. The weather was perfect for a grand celebration.

The day started off with an Ice Cream Social thanks to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (we love this place!) Josh got the cookies and cream and I got the vanilla and of course it was just so good–I haven’t had a waffle cone in just about forever and this one was just exquisite.

Afterwards we met some real life park rangers that were meeting and greeting kids and educating us on how awesome our national parks are. Josh was so excited to meet them (not gonna lie, so was I). :)

6 Impressive Core Workouts For Runners

Strong runners need a strong core. Here's 6 core workouts for runners to keep you strong and injury free

If there is one thing that every runner should have–it’s a strong core. Our core is at the center of our body holding us upright when we run and keeping us from toppling over when we become exhausted. The stronger your core, the less likely you are to get all slumpy (my new word!) when you run.

A few weeks ago I mentioned briefly about my never ending battle with my Diastasis Recti. After I wrote about it, I had a lot of you reach out and thanked me for talking about my struggle. It is one of those things that is a by product of multiple births, and although I recovered quickly after my first born, it’s been really hard to recover after my second born.

Today I am sharing some diastasis recti specific abs exercises that will activate the deep core muscles and start the healing process. I am also sharing 5 more fantastic (normal) ab routines for EVERYONE in the latest installment of our very popular Workouts For Runners Series!

NFL Fan Style Women's Fashion-0995So I know I say this pretty much all the time, but this MAY be the coolest thing I’ve ever done as a blogger. Really.

Okay at LEAST top five!

I was invited to the NFL offices to check out the new line of women’s fashion for the upcoming season and I seriously almost broke a nail trying to reply YES as quickly as possible. The NFL super fan inside of me is here waiting patiently until I can watch football from 1-11pm every Sunday. The one that takes her tablet in the kitchen so that I can watch the game while I cook meals for the week? Yes. You can safely say yes. Champion of her Fantasy Football league last year? Yes, you can safely say I will be there.

When I arrived I had to take a deep breath and gather myself, because I am a professional. That lasted for exactly six seconds as I shared my giddy excitement with every NFL staff member I came across. It’s a miracle I didn’t selfie everything and everyone in there.

Can we chat about how amazing these accessories are? We already know that I am a huge Dooney & Bourke fan, so when I saw these gorgeous purses I was all the way infatuated.

The Alex and Ani bracelets, again, I’ve chatted before about my Alex & Ani obsession so  Seeing my favorite teams bracelets was just…sigh. (Dear Husband, if you are reading this we have an anniversary in less than two weeks–HINT HINT HINT)

NFL Junior’s Collection

The NFL Junior’s Collection is also gorgeous and I’m not sure what it says about my own style that I’d totally wear any of these outfits.

The Tour of the NFL Offices

The folks at the NFL offices were nice enough to give me a full tour of the office. I tried to keep it together as much as I could but it was a failure. I couldn’t hide the giddy. Never in my life have I felt like such an uncontrollable dork. The office itself was just so beautifully detailed, I kinda wish that I could decorate my own house just like this.

We went to different floors, that were themed (one for the fan, one for the game, the teams etc). My head nearly exploded (no lie) when I saw the Vince Lombardi trophy up close and personal. I couldn’t touch it but man, she was gorgeous. We also got to see every single Super Bowl ring up close and personal, including the most recent Super Bowl 50 ring that was well…blingtastic.

This football fanatic was SO excited to be there and have the experience! For more information and to check out the collection for all ages and genders, check out NFLshop.com.

5 Lessons We Learned From The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio are over and I am having SERIOUS withdrawals. I watched the games all day and all night. My kids would walk into my room and ask “Mom, you are STILL watching the Olympics?!”.

Yes, yes I was.

I’ve been completely enthralled with the games since I was a kid. I loved watching all the games and pulling for Jamaica and the United States. The idea that all the most amazing athletes from every country was represented was just the coolest thing ever. These Olympic Games were cloaked in controversy, fun, and inspiration. Here are some of the lessons that I got out of the 2016 Olympic Games.

They work hard…really hard

During the games we are lucky enough to see the fruit of all the hard work these athletes put in. We get the privilege to enjoy athletes at the peak of their training, but it wasn’t until I saw a few videos of what Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt go through during training to BE the best–that I was completely blown away.

Despite adversity you can still win

During the women’s 4×100 trials the US Women’s Team was disqualified because of a dropped baton. After a replay it turns out that my bestie Allyson Felix (remember my interview with her last Spring?) was hit on her hand and the team had to run the trials AGAIN on an empty track–then they went on to win Gold.

Sometimes, it isn’t your day.

On the final day of the 2016 Olympic Games, we got to witness the long awaited Men’s Marathon. I was rooting for Meb (because we are obviously friends–read my interview with him here) and he was doing a great job keeping up with the pack until the halfway point. When I saw Meb stop and keel over, my heart dropped. I knew immediately that it wasn’t his day. All the hard work that led up to that moment, didn’t result in a medal but I still have SO much respect for him.

Sportsmanship is always best.

When New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin took a tumble during the 5000M Women’s race, D’Agostino from the US tripped over her and took a fall. Instead of getting up to continue her race, she stopped to make sure Hamblin was okay. They both were really shook up after the race, but in the end finished together.

History was made in the best ways

From the first black woman to ever win a medal (GOLD!) in individual swimming to the first Arab woman, Sara Ahmed, to win a medal for Egypt. We got to witness SO many groundbreaking Olympians just destroy stereotypes and make you feel like you can do it ALL.

Building Champions this Back To School Season with Milk Life!

As we get ready for back to school I’ve been trying to get myself back into a “school year” mindset as so much has changed since the boys went on summer break in June. Now that I am able to be a bigger part of their day, I’m starting to figure out a brand new routine that will work for all of us.

SAMSUNG CSC

During the summertime we have a bit of a loose routine when it comes to meals, usually we have cereal together in the morning and the rest of the day’s meals are quite unpredictable. Breakfast however, is easy and usually around the table and filled stories about what the boys dreamed about the night prior. These dream stories are usually so long that I wonder if they slept for longer than the 8-9 hours that they were in bed! Either way, it’s fun to have breakfast together before we start our day. The boy have a super hectic day at school, and their day is crazy long (our school day runs from 7am – 4pm) so we need high quality fuel to start the day!

As we get into the school year we will be getting up much earlier to catch the school bus. (Not a fan) The goal will be to feed the boys with their customary bowl of cereal because I’d know that at the very least they get the vitamins, minerals and 8 grams of natural protein in each 8-ounce serving of milk. If we don’t get the time and they eat breakfast at school I can give them a cup of milk in their thermos before we get to the bus stop.

To be honest when I was a kid, I used to love a glass of iced cold whole milk (still do!). My friends would love to put chocolate and strawberry syrup in theirs but I was never a fan, plain was perfect for me!

Check out the Milk Life Website that has so many fun recipes and tips to help your kids day start off right with 8 grams of high quality protein.
