Stay off the injured runner list with the best injury prevention exercises for runners.

I’ve been blessed in my short but exciting running career to have no major running injuries. (Knock on all the wood ever made) even throughout marathon training last year I’d be really beat up but nothing really stopped me from completing my next training run.

Today I’m linking up with my favorite runner bloggers for another installment in Workouts For Runners. The popularity of the first three posts has been overwhelming! I suppose that is what happens when great minds collaborate for awesome content!

Today I’m going to share with you 5 easy tips for injury prevention.

  1. Stretching/foam rolling: I am the queen of stretching. I do it in the morning, at night before I go to bed, during the day (especially when things get rough in the office) stretching is so key for easy recovery and simply getting your muscles to work in the way that you need them to.
  2. Crosstraining: it’s only a matter of time before your body becomes used to the movement of running. I am a huge fan of strength training because there are so many different ways to strength train that you can make sure you are using different muscles during different workouts.
  3. Pay attention: I know this sounds insanely obvious but if any of you are like me there could be a lot going on in your life and you might want to go out on a run to figure things out. You Putin your music and you are in the zone and just like that you trip over an object that seemingly came out of no where. Paying attention (especially when running in urban areas!) is so so important. Beware of debris and other items that could potentially trip you up!
  4. Don’t ignore: so you have an ache from last weeks run that won’t go away. Yet, every time you run, you feel it a little bit more. Sometimes, the nagging feeling goes away and we can run pain free again. Sometimes the pain doesn’t stop and it’s time to see a doc. Ignoring the pain could make things so much worse than addressing the issue head on.
  5. Warm up: now this is something I’ve been working on a lot since I’ve started running. Getting up, going to the park, and just running as fast as you can in the easiest way to get your body in trouble. Take your time, start of slow then run when fully warmed up.

Fitness is a HUGE help when it comes to managing anxiety. Also sharing 3 tips to help get you through when things are completely overwhelming.

I’ve had anxiety for a few years now. Not really sure where or when it started but I deal with it on a daily basis. On some days it is barely there, and on some days it’s almost crippling.

My anxiety stems from several things but mainly just life. I worry about my children (a lot), their health, their social adaptation to school. I worry also about my job, if I’m in the right place or do I need more? Let’s just put it this way, if I am emotionally connected to it, I likely have anxiety over it.

As I haven’t visited a doctor to discuss (yet), I’ve been using fitness to help me calm the worry. To be completely honest most days I am so tired (or lazy) that working out seems like the biggest task ever. The excuses begin coming in like rapid fire and all of a sudden I’ve convinced myself to skip a workout. Then I remember that exercise not only calms my anxiety it wears my body out so that I can sleep at night.

A few months ago when my anxiety was at its worst, I’d get up at 2am and worry about significant and insignificant things. The worst part was that I never went back to bed–with an early wake up call of 5am, this would only compound the problem and led to very tired work days.

As an African American woman I am not ashamed to say that I suffer from anxiety. Mental illness is very rarely discussed in our community and we need to start talking about it–like yesterday.

This is all brand new for my husband who has been with me 18 years. I try to give him warning on bad days by telling him my “anxiety is on fleek” so he knows that I will likely be trying to fix all the problems that ever existed in about 30 minutes. On those days there are three things that really help me to relax and regain control of the situation.

Here are three tips to help manage anxiety

  1. Going for a run/walk. Fresh air, for me, is a very natural drug. Being inside, cooped up is enough to make you crazy without even realizing it. Since I can’t leave the building every hour at work I simply walk over to a window and just take a deep breath. It does wonders.
  2. Stretching: stretching before bed almost always means I am going to sleep better. Basic stretches like getting the tension out of your neck with neck rolls or reaching up to the sky as tall as you can have made a BIG difference in the way I sleep.
  3. Write: I have tons of private notes that help me through tough moments. When I start worrying about something I either write a plan to make it better or simple poetry to share how I’m feeling at the moment. It’s super helpful and therapeutic.

Have you or someone you know ever had anxiety? How does fitness help you daily?

This post is brought to you by Momtrends and FairyTales

I love a good homegrown business, and especially a business that is started by a woman, and EVEN more when said business is started by a woman in Brooklyn.

Photo of ALL Fairy Tales Products

I attended a fun event last week by the ladies at Momtrends celebrating the awesome products of the FairyTales hair products line. I had been familiar with the line as my mommy friends have recommended the products to me multiple times. They smell SO good and I feel confident using the products on my babies because the products are free of harsh chemicals, pesticides, toxins, paraben and sulfates.

FairyTales-7166

The event was held in a beautiful loft downtown manhattan just a few steps away from the One World Trade Center. The theme of the party was to create your own cocktails based on the types of FairyTales products. Even though I don’t drink–all of my friends do, so I will be keeping these on hand for our barbecues this summer!

FairyTales-7161 FairyTales-7131

FairyTales hair care line is most famous for their lice control products. If you are anything like me the word lice makes you want to hide under your covers, especially with camp season right around the corner! FairyTales has a Lice Good-Bye kit that gets rid of lice naturally!

Plus they have great shampoo and conditioner kits that are perfect for the summertime swims, especially those kids are heavy pool swimmers (like mine!) and kids that spent a lot of time in the ocean. The shampoos and conditioners remove sea salt, chlorine green and daily build-up with gentle fruit extracts. The vitamins and minerals restore softness, boost shine and protect hair.FairyTales-7135

We got to hear from founder Risa Barash about her line that she started that quickly became popular by word of mouth. FairyTales products have been around since 1999 and are continually growing. The best part is that they are sold pretty much everywhere from Amazon to Target.FairyTales-7153

I highly recommend the FairyTales hair care line not only because it smells amazing, but the owner is the real deal. I am all about supporting my fellow mompreneurs and this is no exception!

Happy Friday yall!

Friday Fitness (1)

We made it to the end of the week. How was your week? Was it amazing? Not so much? My week was pretty normal except I really had to find the time for fitness are it may have never happened.

workoutroundup

Monday: I had about 35 minutes so I decided to go to Blink and do a weights only session. You guys now I love my weight training but I normally do a 10 minute cardio warm up as a starter. I skipped the cardio and went straight into some new moves I learned from the Fit Factory class I took last week as well as incorporating some old school moves like squats and lunges.

IMG_8063

It was a hard session! Every single muscle was trembling and I was ready to pack it in way before the 35 minutes were up! I loved it however and I must make sure I do at least 1-2 days of this as marathon training season is quickly approaching. I can’t even believe that my training plan for my second marathon begins in 6 weeks!!

IMG_8055

Tuesday: I ran a comfortable 6 miles. Since the Brooklyn Half is this weekend, I decided that would be my last run before the race.

IMG_8069

Wednesday: not an official workout but I walked about 1.5 miles back and forth between event hopping.

Thurs/Friday: Rest

UAE10K recap

IMG_8038

Apart from the fact that I overdressed miserably (when will I ever get this right?!) I had a great race last Saturday. I ran in the mid to high 12s which is actually a huge improvement in the last 6 months. Plus a nearly 10 minute difference from my 10k just a few months ago.

IMG_8037

Somehow I ran negative splits! As I was running my The Nike lady told me that my average mile per pace was getting faster. I was hype! Especially because my TomTom watch froze literally as I crossed the starting line. These technology mishaps are starting to become a trend!

It was a nicer race than last year and I’m happy I did it. It was a nice last “long run” before Brooklyn.

upcomingraces

So the largest half marathon in the world, The AirBNB Brooklyn Half Marathon is upon us. Do I feel prepared? Yes and no. The last long run I did was 3 weeks ago when I ran 10 miles.

IMG_7572

I am so excited for the race, rain was predicted but looks like it might be clearing which is nice because the family is coming to see me at the end of the race! I feel completely relaxed about it and I have no insane expectations–I’m just looking to run my borough and at the very end kiss my kids in Coney Island.

The amazing folks at Bowflex provided me with a MaxTrainer M5 machine in exchange for this post, all opinions and thoughts are 100% mine.

Can you believe the 90 Day Fit challenge is officially over?! Seems like literally yesterday we started but it also shows how much and how quickly things can change in just 90 days.

When I started the challenge I was so excited to get my MaxTrainer because having such a dynamic machine in your home left no excuse! I had no idea that I’d end up getting sick for 2 plus months and losing my grandmother all in the span of 3 months.

Bowflex Max Trainer-3552

The MaxTrainer helped me stay on track with my fitness and here’s how:

maxtrainer2

  1. Whenever I feel antsy at home and it is a weird hour or I simply don’t  want to leave my house–I can turn on my favorite reality show and get to work

  2. After spending the day in the hospital, I would come home and be extra emotional. Some days I didn’t want to move and somedays I had infinite energy to burn. The MaxTrainer was perfect on those days

  3. I was home for Spring Break with my kids and my eldest baby had a small outpatient surgery during that time. I couldn’t leave the house as my husband was at work. I was able to jump on the MaxTrainer daily while they ate breakfast. I likely would have gotten nothing done otherwise.

  4. I’ve had some super hectic days at work where a lunch time workout was not an option, I knew that I could prepare dinner, put the kids to bed and get a quick interval workout done and knock out for bed.

  5. Good role model for the kids–pretty much 80% of the time I worked out on the MaxTrainer I had my kids nearby playing. My eldest always fetches me more water (even though I have a full bottle ready) and my youngest often reminds me that I’m sweating!

  6. It taught me that every workout does not have to be hours long. Even getting in the smallest of sweat sessions can make a ton of difference in your day (and your heart!).

maxtrainer1

I want to thank all of you that joined in the 90 Day Fitness Challenge, especially the amazing ladies in my private facebook group! Also thank you to the amazing folks at Bowflex for making this all happen!!

If you are thinking about getting a machine for your home I strongly recommend the MaxTrainer M5–whether you have 14 minutes or one hour–you will get an incredible workout top to bottom, every single time!

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day One-5887

After a strong jam packed first two days (check out day one and day two), this was the day that we going to off on our own a bit but first we had an exclusive movie preview to enjoy!

Alice Through The Looking Glass

We got on a bus to head down to Disney Springs for a sneak preview to the long awaited Alice in Wonderland sequel. I was a bit worried that it might be too much for the boys so I was completely prepared to go for a walk during “scary” scenes. Even though the rating was PG there are ranges to PG!

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6155Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6157Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6144

I was so happy to say that the movie was not only completely appropriate but the boys were completely into it! Usually they get a bit fidgety during some point of the movie but they were glued–as was I! The cinematography was incredible and recognizing the behind the scenes moments that producer Suzanne Todd shared with us the day before at conference added a new layer of intrigue to the movie. We all laughed a lot (my husband the most) and the overall them of being strong and going for what you want was well received.

Afterwards we headed right over to the Lego store because, boys. After a while of building all the things from the Lego pile, we headed to World of Disney to buy my (third) Disney Alex and Ani Bracelet. I’m completely obsessed and I want all of them. All. Of. Them. I got my first one last year at the Disney Social Media Moms On The Road Conference, then I bought my second at the Glass Slipper Challenge earlier this year. I make it a tradition every time I visit Florida!

The food was just…so good. We ate our fill and of course danced and took pictures with Tigger, Pooh, Eeyore and Piglet!

As conference attendees we were provided with a TON (40!!) fast passes each so that we could explore the parks. I’ve been wanting to ride the seven dwarfs mine train since it opened, but because it is one of the most popular rides in Disney–without a fast pass the wait is usually 90 minutes plus!

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Three-6691

Needless to say, we rode 3 times in a row.

We explored the park some more then headed over to Hollywood studios because I knew the boys would be so excited to see two live shows: Beauty & The Beast and Frozen: Live Singalong.

The boys love attending live shows, Broadway etc. They were SO into Beauty and the Beast and even though I’ve seen the show so many times I could probably understudy Belle it was so awesome to witness them experience it for the first time.

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Three-6731 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Three-6752 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Three-6774

Frozen: The Singalong was a first for me but I knew the boys would be ecstatic because there are daily Frozen singalongs in my house (still!). Not only did they know every word they were simply blown away when “snow” fell from the sky!

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Three-6798

We went back to the resort for a small refresh before grabbing a very late dinner in Disney Springs. We decided to try out one of the newest restaurants on the scene Paradiso 57. The guac was one of the best I’ve ever had in my lifetime. No joke.

7 Easy and Thoughtful Teacher Appreciation Gift Ideas

It’s getting to be that time of year!

Those of us with school age children know that gift giving season for teacher is upon us. The last day of school is quickly approaching and parents sometimes feel compelled to give gifts to the teachers that tolerated, babysat took good care of our children and taught them through another school year.

Getting the right gift can be overwhelming and the last thing you might want to do is get the wrong gift. I consulted an expert, a person who has spent 25 years as a teacher and principal. She has received countless gifts over the years some amazing and some not quite so amazing. To write this post I enlisted the expertise of–you guessed it–my mom! Here are her top recommendations for gifts the teacher in your life will love.

7 Easy and Thoughtful Teacher Appreciation Gift Ideas - Here are some thoughtful gift ideas that ANY teacher would love!

  1. Gift Certificate To A Book Store: This gift is super versatile because the teacher can use the card to buy herself a novel or even accessories/books for her classroom
  2. Scarf: A beautiful infinity scarf is not only an awesome accessory for work and play, but such a cool addition to the wardrobe. Plus they are perfect for transitioning weather! (I personally can’t get enough!)
  3. A Gift certificate for a Mani/pedi at a fancy salon: Because teachers deserve to be pampered too! What a great way to start their summer vacation.
  4. A Gift Certificate to a local restaurant: Make sure it’s a good one that you have tried, or at least has good reviews on Yelp!, food is a great gift for pretty much anyone
  5. Movie tickets for two: There are some awesome blockbusters coming out this summer and you can make sure your favorite teacher is covered!
  6. Gift Bag with Personalized Pens and Pencils: We all know that pens and pencils are used daily by teachers, so why not get them special pens with their names on it? Personalized gifts are always a really great way to show that you put special thought into the present.
  7. Starbucks/Dunkin’ Donuts/Tim Horton’s Gift Card: Because most teachers need coffee to survive my the kids in the classroom.

Happy Friday friends!!

Friday Fitness (1)

Let me just put this all out there in the first sentence–I fell off the “wagon” pretty hard the last few weeks. The motivation was simply not there to eat right or even exercise the way that I needed to. Assisting with the planning of the funeral, going through my son have surgery, actually experiencing the funeral then a few days later taking the kids to Disney World.

It’s been a heckuva 3 weeks.

I fell right into old habits because honestly I didn’t have the effort in me to do the extra work required with weight loss. We ordered food in, a lot. Especially on those days when my brain felt so foggy that executing a recipe seemed almost impossible. I was semi-conscious of my calorie intake but not all the way zoned in.

The restart

Re entry is hard. I had to figure out how to reel in my eating, my exercise and especially my mental state. I gained weight back–not sure how much, but I can feel I did. It’s super frustrating because I was doing so well for so long and this came and flipped me upside down.

I don’t blame myself for not eating right or ordering take out. I really don’t. I did whatever I had to do to keep me sane during a very insane, surreal time. I will simply need to work harder to get back on track.

workoutroundup

Monday: I went back to RowHouseNYC and it was so great. Seems like every time I go to this class I get a little bit better and the class gets harder. 45 minutes of rowing is no easy business and for the last 10 minutes of class we have one minute intervals of all out rowing. I was working so hard that I was pretty sure I was going to puke at the end (happy I didn’t!).

IMG_7986

Wednesday: I went on my first run in over two weeks. I ran three very sweaty miles on lead legs during my lunch break. This had been my first run since my 10 miler the day before my grandmother passed.

IMG_8019

Thursday: Fit Factory — I tried a new class that my friend Lucy had been raving about and about halfway through I was pretty sure this was end of our friendship. It was SO hard! It was a mixture of cardio and strength training and there was a never a time when we did a move without a weight in our hands. You know I’ve been to a lot of classes but never one like this! I was NOT ready!!

upcomingraces

On Saturday I have a 10k to run, this is my second time running the UAE 10k and honestly I know it won’t be easy. As tough as the hills are I DO love running in Central Park because it brings me peace. Spending the majority of my marathon training there last year, Central Park has become a small piece of me that has seen me at my worst and at my best.

Next week I will be running the AirBNB Brooklyn Half. It’s so hard to believe that it’s here…already. This training season, pretty much all of 2016…has been pretty bad. I am however looking forward to once again volunteering at the Pre-party at Brooklyn Bridge so look out for me if you are going!

How was your fitness and healthy eating week? What races do you have coming up? Ever get completely derailed from a healthy living journey?

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day One-5887

It’s conference day!!

After an really hectic but magical day one I was excited to spend my first full day absorbing the conference and all it had to offer.

We had to report early (7am!) for breakfast at my favorite park, Hollywood Studios.

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6031

While we ate, it was so much fun catching up with bloggers that live in other states or just whom I haven’t seen in a long time. Can you believe I didn’t take not even one selfie?! I guess I was enjoying their company THAT much!Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6009

We sat down and listened to Michael Roddy, show director of the new Star Wars fireworks show that has arrived to Hollywood Studios. There are also tons of Star Wars fun features coming to Disney on the very near future, so if the force is with any of you I suggest you get down to Orlando, stat!! We even got to meet Darth Vader and Chewbacca! Darth was so angry at me, pacing around me and ordering me around. The cranky level was HIGH!

Next we boarded the busses back to the Yacht Club while our families had breakfast on the Boardwalk. It was such a relief to have them taken care of while I took care of business at the conference.

The Conference

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6044 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6053 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6066Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6257 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6165

It will be so hard to squeeze a full day of conference highlights but here goes!!

Highlights From The Day Include:

Disney Junior: Disney Junior has LOADS of new programming coming in the near future! Most of it I can’t discuss but let’s just say my four year old is going to LOVE it as we are still very much a Disney Jr. household.

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6081

Rivers of Light: If you have ever been to Animal Kingdom then you know that it generally closes earlier than all of the parks. Disney has added a new spectacular show to end the evenings and they held no punches! The level of detail included in the show is really out of this world, I hope I can come back to see it soon!!Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6075

Disney Blogs: I’ve already mentioned that the Disney Blog is one of my favorite blogs year round. We got to take closer peek into how they create content and how many people are involved in the process. There are so many cute videos and tidbits, if you are a Disney fan–you have to check it out!!Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6202

Finding Dory: Any Finding Nemo fans in the building? We got to preview 30 minutes from the new movie coming this summer Finding Dory. It’s been 12 years since Finding Nemo and oh my goodness was it worth the wait! I was in my feelings for a lot of it, not going to lie, but the story focuses on Dory and her journey to find her parents. I am itching for it to come into theaters because I was all the way hooked after the first half hour!

Alice Through The Looking Glass: Movie producer Suzanne Todd introduced us to Alice Through The Looking Glass except from a behind the scenes perspective. I couldn’t show you all the amazing effects but I was really intrigued by all of the special effects and hard work that had to go into a movie that visually stunning.

Dream Big Princess: One of my favorite parts of conference day! Disney has a new campaign aimed at instilling confidence in young girls based on the stories of popular princesses. I was all over this because I am a HUGE proponent of confidence builders in young women!

The conference was really a fun day of learning, and did I mention how well they fed us?!

After the conference we had just a few hours to spend with our families before the beach party so I met my guys over at Magic Kingdom and I was just in time for the Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Parade:

To close out a wonderful day of learning we were transported over to Typhoon Lagoon for Donald’s Beach Party. Although we weren’t riding any rides, the scenery was pretty awesome. The food was pretty good too!

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6373

We had the honor of meeting (my husband and I’s favorite characters) Donald and Daisy Duck as well as Chip & Dale.

Then there were fireworks…just for us. Could it get any better?

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6544 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6391

Day 2 of the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration finally came to a close and we all wiped out really quickly but not before we got even more swag! Including books that the boys were crazy happy about!

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Day Two-6578

Stay tuned for day 3 where I review our sneak preview of Alice Through The Looking Glass, Disney Springs, Hollywood Studios and I will share which ride was our favorite of all!
