I go through weird phases when it comes to my birthday. Some years I’m like let’s do a huge celebration other years I’m literally hiding under my covers because I can’t deal.

I’ve never been a birthday person–like I’ve never been the type to notify people six months in advance that my birthday was coming–in fact I like to keep it secret because honestly I am horrible at remembering other people’s birthdays. Like horrendous. I may have lost a friend or two over it (not confirmed but still quite the possibility!).

This year I wanted to dance. I wanted to eat good food. I wanted to celebrate my 33 years on earth because there has been a lot of sad news lately and I just wanted to celebrate with people that I love to pieces.

FullSizeRenderI invited a lot of folks (including lots of folks that I knew would automatically say no or commit but not quite make it). It’s always so tricky with inviting people over and over but I figured let me make them feel special by at least extending the offer.

Never did I expect sixteen (!!) peeps to show up and show me sooo much love all night. But let me back up to the beginning of the night.

We would be having dinner at Dinosaur BBQ, a crazy popular bbq joint in park slope Brooklyn. While I was on my way in the Uber I started getting last minute cancellations left and right. This was expected but it still stung a bit. I was freaking out–but then I saw my best friends face and it was all okay.

IMG_6733 IMG_6732 IMG_6730

We all ordered pretty quickly because the wait had been over an hour. I ended up getting a ¼ rack of ribs with French fries and coleslaw. It was wayyyyyy better than I thought it would be! The meat fell off the bone so delishiously I was almost sad I didn’t get a ½ rack! The cole slaw was good and so were the French fries but those ribs–ohmygah.

not very sexy but tasted so good!

not very sexy but tasted so good!

Once we figured out the bill, most of us headed over to littlefield that hosts a retro reggae night every first Saturday. We met another four ladies there including my amazing blogger wives Scherrie and Monica.

the flash was really, really bright lol

33bday9

We cut the cake and danced the night away.

33rdbday5 33rdbday433rdbday6

I even took a selfie in the bathroom because the lighting was so fun!

IMG_6754

There was so much singing and laughing before you knew it–it was 3am!

33rdbday8 33rdbday733bday10

I split an Uber with my girlfriend and was home in 25 minutes.IMG_6753

I had a really amazing time and it taught me so much about worrying about who isn’t in the room vs. enjoying those who took the time to celebrate with me. It really was an unforgettable birthday…maybe I’ll do it again next year?? :)

Are you a big birthday person? How did you celebrate your last birthday?

Last week Wednesday I was invited to attend the Macy's Black History Month celebration. As I mentioned in my event pre post the event featured R&B superstar Monica, Actor/Host/Producer Terrance J and Actress Jurnee Smollett Bell. When I arrived exactly at the start time of 6pm the place was already packed and the line of people waiting to get in was crazy long. So many beautiful people of all different ethnicities all there to celebrate Black History Month. After I checked my coat I made my way to VIP seating and got settled in. We kicked off the show with some Black History Trivia which I am ashamed to say that I failed...miserably. It's all good though because I learned a lot! Finally it was time for the main show. Macy's did an excellent job picking these celebrities for the panel because each one of them had so many great things to share. Seeing one of my childhood idols Monica, tell her story while standing strong in her faith was just so refreshing. She talked about having it all and still being in a bad place emotionally. She mentioned that material things only cover up bigger problems. Preach Monica!! Terrance J was also crazy inspiring. He talked about not being the best at everything but how his hard work brought him to where he is today. He shared the story about auditioning for 106&Park--getting rejected--then driving all the way to Atlanta the next day to try out again and landing the job that would propel him to stardom. That story was so incredibly moving and a true testament to what hard work can bring. Afterwards there was food and drinks. I wanted to get a picture with all of the panel but the lines were crazy long and I needed to get home to my husband. I did get this picture with Terrance though! Tips For Starting A Gym Routine

curvyyoga (1)

Let’s face it, the gym can be super intimidating. There are a lot of super confident, strong bodied people milling around and the facility has so many different options it can be so overwhelming.
Guess what? They were all beginners too!
Starting a gym routine is a lot easier than you think! Here is how:

Get a Tour

Ask someone at the front desk to give you a tour of the facility. The first thing you want to know is the lay of the land. Which equipment is where, where are the water stations, the group exercise studios, the weight room etc.

Get proper workout clothes

When I started going to the gym workout clothes were incredibly expensive (but that could also be due to the fact that I was a college student). Now you can go to any major department store and get workout clothes for decent prices. Make sure you try them on–nothing is worse than feeling uncomfortable in your clothes…at the gym.

Eat.

Don’t eat a full meal right before you go workout because moving around with a heavy tummy is not fun. Having an apple/banana/yogurt is a easy snack that will fuel you but not weigh you down.

Get on the treadmill

If this is your first time ever in a gym and you want to just get your body moving, get on a treadmill and just walk. You can set the incline to 1.0 with a speed of 2.0 and increase as you see fit.

Use your smartphone

Another great resource for going to the gym is right in the palm of your hands. I created a full list of fitness apps for your smartphone that can guide you through a quick routine to a more advanced set. The best part is that you can use the apps with your music while they give you direction on which exercise to do.

Build the best gym bag

Think about everything you might need in the perfect gym bag. Being prepared withe everything makes the gym experience run that much smoother.

Know your limitations

Work hard but don’t go crazy. Your body will let you know when you are done and when you can push a bit further. Don’t fall into the comparison trap with someone that may have been attending the gym and working out for way longer than you have.

Have fun

Get your favorite workout tunes (if you prefer) and just go for it. Like walking on the treadmill? Go for it. Like gliding on the elliptical? Go for it. Once you get more comfortable in your surroundings you can progress and move on to more intermediate machines and classes.

What other tips do you have to offer those looking to start a gym routine?

I turn 33 today. Yowza. I got one of the best birthday gifts ever earlier this week….

It was a less than ordinary Tuesday–it was crazy busy at work–one of those days when you are being pulled in a million directions and you really aren’t sure which way is up?

Then around 11am I got this message:

You have been accepted into the Rock N Blog Ambassador program!

IMG_6694

Oh my gosh! I was totes freaking out majorly on the inside but I didn’t want my coworkers to ask me what was going on, and didn’t want to have to explain my sheer excitement to eyes that would glaze over when I mention something else related to running. So instead I ran to the restroom and lost my composure there. It went a little something like this:

tumblr_inline_nnbb4eO1MA1tqlflx_500 excited-gif-2 pass-out

After all of that I posted on my social media channels and started checking out my teammates. So many familiar faces including my girl, one of my biggest supporters (and best running friend in my head) Renee and so many blogging powerhouses that I follow on a regular basis.

You may remember my rain soaked RNRDC experience last year that would have been an awesome race if it wasn’t for the monsoon we ran in!

IMG_6720

Now the options are endless–I’m definitely doing Brooklyn in October, that was on the calendar since before I found out I was an ambassador. As far as the rest of the races–sky’s the limit! I’m looking at doing RNRDC again in early March, Philly and maybe Raleigh? (I may or may not have already scouted flights!) What a perfect way to check out new cities!

Also related: I’m running NYC again this year. I ripped the bandaid off and paid to run the five boroughs once more in November. It was terrifying. Not gonna lie. I wasn’t even sure I was going to do it again until I finally got the guts to open my official finisher magazine that came many months earlier. I opened it and was quite shocked at how many feels I had. There it was: my name among tens of thousands–a finisher. A real finisher.

I did that.

What’s insane is this NYC running culture. Can we talk about this for a second? The NY running community is so intense! We already talked about how fast the Brooklyn Half sold out, but even more so–we all race the same races, we all strive to be better, we all race hard then have a really good effin time afterwards. It almost feels weird to NOT run with all of these amazing people. It doesn’t help that I am a part of at least 8 different NYC running groups. Ha!

I’m really excited for a year of 2016 running!

SO excited to be apart of the #RockNBlog team @runrocknroll! #runchat #running

Eddie-the-Eagle-Movie-Poster (1)

Last week on Tuesday I was able to attend a screening of Eddie The Eagle in one of my favorite movie theaters in NYC–AMC Empire. Although I knew I would be going to see the film, I purposely didn’t look for the trailer or read the description of the movie because I love surprises.

I’m so glad I didn’t.

Inspired by true events, Eddie the Eagle is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. From producers of Kingsman: The Secret Service, Eddie the Eagle stars Taron Egerton as Eddie, the loveable underdog with a never-say-die attitude.

The movie was about a lot of things but mainly one person’s never-ending fight to prove that they could compete. From when Eddie was a young boy, he had all the cards against him–he had a brace on his leg, he had a father that wanted him to work in the same stable environment that he had worked in, and he had an especially hard time with his peers. Eddie just wanted one thing: to be an Olympian.

EF6B7066.CR2

Eddie went through many, many trials and tribulations in his attempt to reach the Olympics. One thing that never ever wavered though was his unbreakable belief in himself. While everyone around him didn’t think he had a chance, Eddie always believed in himself the most. He had an unlimited supply of simply believing that he could do the impossible. It made me wonder what heights and great things I could achieve by thinking the same of myself?

Most of all Eddie the Eagle made me think of my mother. In the movie Eddie’s mom was unconditionally supportive, even when the outcome was bleak, even when she was worried and had no idea what was going to happen next–she never wavered with her support. My mom is absolutely the same way; she is a constant support with my kids and my dreams. Having someone that supports you that way in life is not only a huge boost to your confidence but it really makes you believe that you can do anything if you really want it bad enough.

Eddie the Eagle was a phenomenal movie, it was a feel-good movie and I found myself either in shock, awe or just plain excited for Eddie and his adventures. Hugh Jackman was great in his role and of course he is not bad to look at! The entire cast was perfect and although I won’t give it away Eddie The Eagle is truly a movie worth seeing! It will warm your heart and make you feel as if you too can do the impossible!

It’s Thursday so I am throwing it back! This was originally published a few years ago and the words still ring true today. Enjoy!

****

You guys know that I have a love for fitness, it is my place to escape all of the crazy. When my day is super stressful at work (or even at home) I go the gym, put on my Beats by Dre headphones and do some work until the magical endorphins appear. My weight issues have fluctuated from high to low but one thing that has always remained consistent is my daily determination to exercise.

I started this blog years ago because  I was pregnant and couldn’t do what I LOVED to do (exercise like crazy) because of very painful sciatica. The blog then evolved into a message that showed moms, stay at home moms, working women, working women who were moms, that you can always find time for fitness. Always.

During the last sermon of the year, my pastor taught us the three things a man should have being the head of the family. As I thought about these three things, I realized that you need these three things to stay on track with your fitness journey as well.

3 qualities you need to succeed on your healthy living journey

1) Decisiveness: There may come a point where you are sick of how you look or how you eat. Nothing will happen in your journey until you make the decision to change. For example: I knew I have had issues with my eating for the past 2 years. When I came home from Blogalicious I saw myself in pictures and made the decision to change. Making that decision has changed my perspective but it has also made things that much harder because I can no longer do what I used to. But with  the changes I have done more than I was able to in 3 months than I have in 2 years.

2) Consistency: Looking back at my journey, this was the one thing I struggled with the most. I really had a wondering eye when it came to diets. I saw what was working for one person so I tried it for a few weeks. Then I heard whispers at a conference about what worked for this person so I tried that. Then there are all of the diet trends that get thrown at you daily like Paleo, low carb, high carb, gluten-free, weight watchers, Jenny Craig, fat free, vegan, South beach–the list goes on. I wanted the best body possible so I was willing  to try all of these things. If it didn’t work after 2 weeks, I gave up and moved on. Now that I have been calorie counting consistently and logging my foods daily the major transformation has begun. There are certain days weeks where I flirt with trying a new program because I am frustrated with the slow progress but I know in the end consistency will get me through,  and it will get you through as well.

3) Strength: this is a doosie when it comes to working out and weight-loss. There are so many days out of the week where is takes a ton of strength to even get out of the bed much less workout. It’s about finding strength in the moments that you never would have even thought about before. For me it’s the little things, saying  no to my husband every night as he offers me non healthy foods to share with him. Saying no to the cookie barrage of the holidays. There are occasions where I still say YES but those are much fewer and far between. I find strength in saying no. It reinforces the journey that I am on. It takes a ton of strength to tell your friends that you have plans, to ignore the side eyes, to close your ears to the mocking giggles and the claims that you are “missing out”. You need strength to make decisions and you need strength to stay consistent.

10 Must Have Items For Your Gym Bag
In my many years of working out I have blown through many gym bags. I have made many mistakes when it comes to my bag as well. For example: I have forgotten my sneakers, or even worse one sneakers. My skin has been super dry from lack of lotion and I have a suffered from being extra funky when I don’t have any deodorant. Just keeping it real here folks.
Today I am sharing with you my top 10 things that I need in my gym bag. You can have one or all of these things but for me, these things come in quite handy pretty often.
10 Must Have Items For Your Gym Bag
1) Snacks: After a really intense workout you may find yourself starving when you leave the gym. Its really great to have a small snack like a apple or banana to save you from eating the entire kitchen when you get home.
2) Money: This one is a given for any bag but you never know when you need some spare cash to buy a lock or a water.
3) Towel. (Big and small): Self explanatory. Small towel for the gym floor and big towel for your post workout shower.
4) Sneakers: Seems like a no brainer right? I can’t even tell you guys how many times I have forgotten my sneakers at home. Since my workout varies from not needing sneakers (spinning & yoga) to running outside  to running on the treadmill, leaving your sneakers at home can happen quite easily.
5) workout clothes: Always remember the three parts. Top, Sports Bra and Pants.
6) necessary makeup: Ever left a sweat session looking like a zombie? *raises hand* Now I make sure I have a powder and at the very least eyeliner and a neutral lip gloss.
7) Perfume: This one is optional but I always make sure I have one of those sampler perfumes in my gym bag
8) Backup Headphones: There have been many times where I’ve forgotten to charge my bluetooth headphones and had to pull out my backups. Since music is mandatory for my workout, I need to make sure that I’m covered!
9) Womanly Products: Because you never know!
10) Extra socks: This one may sound weird but I didn’t realize I needed extra socks until I was wearing tights to work one day and needed socks for my workout.

BFX Studio’s Fusionride + Core Class Review

bfxstudio-fusionride

Last week Tuesday I booked a class at BFX Studios which is a brand new addition to the zillion other studios on classpass.  I am super familiar with BFX because this was the location of the Jabra Sports Coach Headphones event that I attended last summer.

I remember being completely in love with the facility and the second time around I remembered exactly why. The gym is spotless and sparkling. The locker rooms aren’t the biggest but they are filled with tons of amenities including big fluffy towels!bfx-studios-fusionride

The class is a fusion class that combines spinning and bootcamp. I have never taken such a fusion class but spinning addicts will take pretty much any class that involves a bike and some loud music (or that might just be me).

When I arrived I signed a first time visitor waiver and walked into the beautiful locker room. I learned my lesson from last weeks locker room disaster so I came dressed and ready to play.bfx-studios-fusionride-2

It had been so long since I had been on a bike with shoe cages! All of my spin classes usually provide spin shoes so putting my foot in a cage was a bit of an adjustment.

And we were off!! The spin class was crazy intense the music was fire and the instructor was in your face pumping you up and not living on the bike.IMG_6626

Once the thirty minutes of crazy intense spin was over, it was time to get on the mat and work. We did a lot of abs and this one move that had us throwing weighted balls up and catching them in a squat. I didn’t feel it at first but my arms were sore for days after!

bfx-studios-fusionride-3
It was definitely a new experience, I still got my spin high but with a little bit of bootcamp which I kinda hate in general but this little sampling was completely manageable. I would absolutely recommend this class for any one!

Dove-Real-Beauty-Campaign

The Women Of The Dove Beauty Campaign

I was listening to a conversation with two women who were discussing a plus sized actress. They were so excited about the fact that this actress would be getting a role in a movie because there was finally a person that looked like them in the movies.

I was in total agreement until one of the ladies mentioned that she was so happy that they casted a “real” woman for the role. The way she used the word real rubbed me the wrong way but I didn’t really think about it any further.

I realized later on that the reason why her statement bothered me so much because the statement implied that a person thinner than her is somehow fake. Or even worse, unattractive.

Let’s just be clear here folks every single woman is real. We all have flesh, blood and reproductive organs. We all have to fight the good fight of doing a job twice as hard as a man and somehow yet receiving half as much credit. Calling someone who has more weight on their body real only serves as a divider. That is the last thing we need with the likes of Trump and other women bashers already doing a great job trying to divide us.

Let me be clear, we absolutely need diversity on the big and small screens when it comes to body image. We have little girls that need to see amazing role models and women that look like them doing incredible things. This is a fact. The best thing that we can do is accept everyone and not shun them or disparage them because they don’t look like you.

We need to change our language, once we change our language we change the language of the media. We begin to say no to the stereotypes. In the last 20 years we have made great strides in starting to see more diverse images in media. Barbie is now curvy with kinky hair. We have an African American director Barbie. This is HUGE and very much needed. I was never a Barbie girl but I guarantee you if I had these sort of choices available I’d be a complete fan.

new barbie body shape plus size
With all these revolutionary things happening it’s imperative that we become conscious of our language. We should be having supportive conversations that bring us closer and doesn’t isolate a group by their weight, color and especially their gender.

Friday Fitness (1)Happy Friday y’all!!

How was your week? My week was a bit crazy (but what’s new Nellie?!). We are still under a pile of snow from the snowmageddon last weekend but I’m happy to say I was able to get all my workouts in this week!!

Monday

Getting to and from work was not fun in the least. The trains were extra crowded and extra delayed. There were piles and puddles of melted snow so high it didn’t matter what you had on your feet–you were going to be gross.

Since I didn’t want to deal with any of that I decided to workout at home with my BowFlex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells. I did tons of squats, lunges, shoulder presses etc while watching my favorite show, Love and Hip Hop. That show is so entertaining that it totally distracts me from how hard I’m working out!

Tuesday

I can’t talk much about Tuesday’s workout at BFX Studios because I plan to do a full review next week but it was a spin/Bootcamp fusion class that pretty much knocked my socks off!

Wednesday

I finally ran. You would think that I wasn’t running a 10k and Half Marathon back to back for the Glass Slipper Challenge in 3 weeks! It’s okay though, since this is a low pressure super chill race I plan to take it as easy as I did last year. That is the only way to have any fun! I want ALL the photo opps!!

Also I can’t wait to run through the castle again. I have a feeling that there will be all the tears and I’m ready for it!

Anywho, I ran 4 strong miles and this weekend I have 12 on deck. Let’s do it!!IMG_6641

Thursday: Rest Day

Friday

Today I have a date with Flywheel! It’s been awhile since I’ve been so I’m excited for a little Friday evening burn. Which pretty much never happens so I’m excited!

Wins of the week

  • I will work out 5 times this week!
  • I am on the Huffington Post again! This time for my Body Shaming article
  • I celebrated a friend’s wedding last night and spent 3 hours laughing hysterically with my new coworkers. I still miss my old family but my new family is pretty darn cool too.
  • I’m finally comfortable at work. 6 months in. I thought it would never come but I’m ok–and a little bit stronger than I thought.

p.s. Did you guys see that the AirBNB Brooklyn Half sold out in 52 minutes?! Bruh. 50,000+ people run this race! It’s the LARGEST half marathon in the world! 52 minutes. Last year was 6 hours. I don’t even think the RunDisney Races sell out that fast!

I get it though. It was one of the best and most emotional races I have ever run.

I’m happy I volunteered at the pre party last year, so I have guaranteed entry with no pressure. Shout Out to Brooklyn though! I’m so proud!!!!

How was your health and fitness week? What are your wins?!
