Party Planning & Facebook Annoyances

Partytime

How was your weekend y’all?

It got all cold again in NYC. I mean, why does mother nature tease us with 61 degrees on Monday then drop it by 30 degrees on Saturday?! It’s crazy!

I started of the weekend teaching my Zumba class of course, and I won’t lie, I had a blast. I wasn’t even feeling all that well when I got there but once the music started I was all good!

The rest of the weekend was me literally going over a checklist, trying to figure out what ELSE I need for the baby’s 2nd birthday party next week. I am trying not to take a day off from work, so I need to get it all done by the end of the week. I have never been the best birthday party planner but I hope to make this one nice. I don’t have the resources for the most fanciest party but I can make it special and FULL of love!

I am hosting the party for the first time EVAH, and I won’t lie, i’m a little nervous! Usually I host it at my moms daycare, but we decided to do it at our house this year because the set up and clean up is SO REAL and we’d rather do it here at our house on our time.

I can’t believe my little guy is about to be 2, I started this blog with him in my belly.

Also, should I hire a clown? I have xbox kinect, and pin the tail on the donkey. Is that not enough? Mama’s pockets are simply not deep enough! Do you guys hire entertainment for parties? I mean I guess I’m kind of worried that the kids won’t have anything to do?  It is a 3 hour daytime party. Hmm.

Facebook doing the most

So did anyone see the article about facebook admitting that they are reducing visibility of non paid posts to users feed?

Yeah.

This is a problem. I actually can’t stand facebook, it is by far my least favorite social network (and there are a lot on the list!) I simply try to grow my facebook fan likes because companies are interested in that kind of statistic. What makes it crazy is that on any given day, if I share anything (sponsored or not) it is most likely only going to reach 10% of my fanpage likers which is bananas! When I try to share my fellow bloggers (amazing) content, no one sees it! Quotes or other plain text updates get the most play but even that really never gets about 20% unless there is a lot of engagement (comments mostly–likes are not even hold its weight anymore).

Make-Great-Facebook-Fan-Page1

I care about my fanpage but facebook isn’t even allowing me to GET to them, which sucks. Our facebook feeds have become insanely overloaded with sponsored ads, then friend activity (some friend activity, I haven’t seen an update from 2/3 of my friends list in a VERY long time! At its not because they are not posting!) then if you are lucky you will get some pages activity.

EVEN when I subscribe to the page and tell facebook to make it a priority in my feed, I still miss super important posts! Facebook makes me crazy I tell ya! The real of it though is that if you want to remain competitive you have to make sure your numbers are up–even if you are reaching 3 people (and one of them is your husband). I have no money for ads. I spend $10 one time and for 12 likes. Was it worth it? No. So if you see me over on google plus and my first love, twitter a lot more you know why.

What do you think about Facebook’s new rules? Do you hire live entertainment for your kids’ birthday parties? Do you have any tips for this mama that love celebrating but hates the work involved?!

  1. Don’t give up on FB yet – your post is the first post I saw this morning and I clicked over. Am I one of three? Hmmm. But yeah I’m not going to pay money for FB ads either. Christopher’s birthday is this coming Saturday. He will be 9 and the only real party he’s ever had was his 1st one. We’ve done the little thing in his classroom. Last year he told me my cakes takes better than Walmart so he just wanted to have his cake at home. Planning a party for a December birthday is really hard. Mine is on Friday. Next year he will be 10 and I hope to start planning for something early for a real party. If you have time to steal on Pinterest, I bet you’d find some good “to do” exercises. I hope the weather is going to be good for you. We were also crazy this weekend. 82 Friday – half that yesterday. Today 72. SMH

    • If you are then I am honored! December birthdays are really tough! I am learning this. I totally went on pinterest there was some good stuff!

  2. First off I don’t think you need to get a clown. Kids find so many ways of entertaining themselves and just the “new” toys that they see that your kids have will keep them busy for hours. I’ve seen it happen!
Second, I also hate all of that about FB! I can’t even keep up with all the rules and what they’re cutting out. I knew something was up when I usually get 300-400 “people viewed this” down to 100-200!!?? WHAT?? I’ll be out on Twitter and Google+ with you!

    • You were right Allie, I didn’t get the clown and things worked out so I am happy about that! At least we have twitter and google plus!

  3. Same here about Facebook. I seriously have been using Twitter, G+, Pinterest and Instagram so much more in past couple of months, because of this. If my posts go up automatically on my fan page, I get less then 5 people who see it on any given day. I have over 3,000 followers and 5 people see it! Crazy and I then will repost with link in comments and still lucky if I get 10% or about 300 to see it. Seriously they are just annoying as all can be with this and I refuse to pay for advertising and will not do it. So, definitely look for me more on those other networks, because like you totally not feeling the FB love anymore. And good luck with the party and cannot wait to hear all about it! :)

    • That is bananas, and a LOT of work to get your posts seen on FB! We need to unite and make Google plus even more awesome!

  4. Oh, NELLIE!!!! HE IS SO CUTE!!!! Could he BE and cuter? No. It would not be possible! I love his little smile. Adorbs. Two years old!! That’s a biggie!! You are going to rock the party! I’ve never hired a clown, but one I hired this guy that brought animals (bunny, lizard, snake…and a few others) and the kids sat in a circle and got to hold each one, etc. It took up time and was a hit, but those things are NOT cheap! We’ve done fine with nobody extra hired, too! At 2, the kids will just play. It will be great!!

I am so with+ you on FB. I hate it. It’s definitely my least favorite social medial. Ashley likes it, so that evens out for us. I abhor how people can say they want to see your stuff, and they don’t even see your entries in their feed. It’s so frustrating and makes me feel stabby. If I fan a page it’s because I WANT to see their stuff. GAH. HATE THEM but as bloggers you can’t cut them out. People like FB. I wish they didn’t and we’d all leave together and be someplace else like G+ but that hasn’t happened yet. I will relish the day, though!! –Lisa

  5. Yay a fellow Sag I assume my birthday is next week also so save some of those beautiful cupcakes you make for me. My son had a big birthday party at the house when he turned 4 never will I do that again. I invited 30 people over 60 showed up we had just enough food (was not expecting all of them) I spent about 500 on everything including food, cake, decor, outfit for him, cleaning the house (I hired someone to come and deep clean) and entertainment. He has not had a party since and won’t have another until he turns 10. My daughter doesn’t have any friends so I am good til she starts real school.

I hate Facebook even on a personal page level. I only keep it because as you said companies are asking for it. I am going to step back off of Facebook just do a few things on there but I did start the FB group interactive Newsletter. I am going to see how that does for the time being. I am stepping up my game on Instagram, Pinterest, and Google +

    • nah he is on the top of the capricorn scale on the 20th–its just too hard to plan a party the sat before Christmas! I need to up my pinterest game for real!

  6. Yes, Facebook is pissing me off too. I tried paying for a post yesterday to get as much reqch as I could and Facebook denied the boost. Which is incredibly sad because it was a post about the blogger Christine Keith and her son who were murdered by her ex-husband the other day. Apparently the ad had too much text to be approved. If you honestly can deny that type of boosted post, then I don’t want to do business with you. Somrone else needs to create a new social networking site. Now.

    • Wow, I didn’t even know they “denied” boosts. Like who does that?? SO insane. I agree with you–we need a NEW social networking site with options.

  7. For personal use, I love facebook. It’s the way I let my mom and various friends see what’s going on with Pookah. But you are right, most of the time, I don’t see half of the posts that I want to see, that I’ve tols Facebook that I want to see. I did however, see your post this morning and that’s how I got here today. In fact, I usally seee yours on facebook everyday. I think because you post so early. BUT I never get the reach that I want with my posts! I’ve tried the paid route 3 times and all it got were more VIEWS on the post. It didn’t translate to actual blog traffic. I’m really done with facebook .Every month thre is something new. I don’t have the time to keep up!! SO I will be focusing more on instagram, google+. pinterest and my favorite twitter.

I have never done a “real” party for Pookah at my house. Girl no. Just no. I’m waiting until he turns about 8 or 9 or 10. Then they can have a sleepover and leave me alone. LOL

    • I definitely think its my timeframe plus the face that it comes on my personal page–my fan page gets no love. I need to get my pinterest game up stat!

  8. Oh my gosh! I hate FB so much! I would rather not use it at all but like you pointed out, it’s not really an option. I hate all the sponsored stuff, I hate the fact that every time I go in to my fan page they try to get me to buy space, I hate that I can’t see a complete list of my fans… The list of dislikes is endless!

I think the party is going to great! You already have the most important ingredient, which is love!

  9. Look at that “wickedly handsome” boy! Ah, when Des turns two…I will lose it. Not really. Two is a great age. One of my favorites. The FB thing is ridiculous. Unfortunately I really need my FB page because I’m a photography business disguised as a blog. Or am I a blog disguised as a photography business? Either way, you get the point.
I’m not really into children’s entertainment unless it’s someone totally recommended, local and affordable. Which is all possible!

  10. I use FB so little these days that I didn’t even realize there had been some changes!
I would skip the clown – some kids freak out around them and you can save the money!!! Kids at 2 will pretty much just run wild – at least the way I remember it!!! Good luck getting everything done!!

  11. I saw that post and I’ve been stewing on it for days, trying to figure out how to handle it. I don’t have $$ to spend either but I have been doing that here and there because otherwise it seems like posts don’t get seen. And I know brands are having the same problem….frustrating!
Michelle recently posted…Personalized Christmas Gift Tags {Guest Post}My Profile

  12. Nellie, clowns are scary!! I think the party will be so much fun for him without you going crazy – didn’t your boys get all excited over a “party” for their dad that consisted of the four of you, a cake and balloons? Your baby boy is soooo cute. :) Mine turns 2 next month. It’s crazy how quickly that went!

FB is no good for bloggers’ pages, for sure. I know I reach so few people and the oddest posts are the ones that actually reach a lot of users. It seems random and I’m sure it’s not, but I can’t figure it out. I love it for the format and the extra it adds, but that doesn’t really count if I’m not reaching all my page fans. Sigh. And G+ is SO CONFUSING to me.
Carly recently posted…Scenes from a weekend #5 (warning: some bragging involved)My Profile

    • Thanks Carly! Yes, the boys were happy with the simple party for their dad, but of course I had to do the 2nd bday all big! Google plus is weird. It’s true. But we may have to become experts to get anywhere!

  13. I don’t give much attention to my FB page. The regulars comment so I figure they are seeing it. They are really trying to make it hard for us to get our content out there.

Clowns are scary, please don’t get one! I am the worst at planning parties. I can have all of the ideas in the world but when it comes to putting all of the pieces together I suck.
Mimi recently posted…Small Business Gift GuideMy Profile

    • Its a shame too, because we are putting out good content. ugh. I am like the worst at party planning and I get so much anxiety over it!! I need to stick to school parties.

  14. I didn’t see it but we already knew it was going on. That is one reason why I just stopped all the activity on my page for the most part. It takes up too much of my energy to schedule and create content for activity when I know that no one is going to really get the opportunity to engage with it. That is one reason I love the Visalus team. They figured out how to beat FB’s algorithm. EVERYONE sees our Vi posts because we tag like 20 people and we all comment on it, then it shows up in everyone’s news feed. FB is smart! They are going to make their money but for us it is so annoying!

Happy birthday to the little one! I say you plan activities within your budget. Pinterest can keep you busy with the kids, but they do need structure for 3 hours….or at least that is what I was told 1 year when I let the kids just run crazy for a few hours at my Sundae Sunday party. After this weekend when my sister acted as Princess Tiana for the Character breakfast, the costume place hired her as their official Tiana @ $150 a party . The price for party momas like you is $250….YIKES…I get it!!!!
Joi recently posted…A Joy Box for You “Joi-Style”My Profile

    • It’s crazy! I would never tag folks on facebook that don’t directly have anything to do with what I am saying — I have seen other people get really ugly about that so I just stay away from that. I totally can see how the concept gets more eyes though!

    • also your sis is the perfect Tiana. Congrats to her.

  15. Oh don’t hire a clown, it’s not worth the extra expense. There are plenty of things you can do to entertain the kidlettes. You could play Pass the Parcel (find an inexpensive toy, wrap it up in multiple layers and have the kids pass it around to music. When the music stops the person holding it get’s to unwrap one of the layers and you start the music again. Keep going until you reach the gift on the inside).

I had no idea FB was doing this but it would explain the drop in my post reach lately, not that I have a lot of followers but to go from 100′s of post reaches to a handful is concerning. I refuse to pay for the advertising too.

Awwww, the baby is turning 2, how awesome. Share the birthday pics, please pretty please :).

Not sure about the FB thing but I only use it for family and friends so it’s probably a little bit different. I think eventually people are going to be fed up with all those social network stuff anyway. They are getting crazier and crazier everyday.

  20. i was reading this article that said that FB fan pages are totally irrelevant. full disclosure, i’m not really active on my fan page so i am inclined to be negative about it. but i hope to write a post about this at some point. to me, it seems like a whole lot of work for little ROI.
catherine gacad recently posted…I’ve Been PoisonedMy Profile

    • Thats the thing Catherine, there is SO little ROI, I feel like I have absolutely no reach so I only put stuff up to seem active–but my posts got seen by more people I think I would work harder at it for sure.

  21. I cannot stand Facebook! I use to love it when I was in college but now it’s a miracle if I even pop on over to Facebook twice in a month.

As for the party situation, I have no advice for that as I’ve never planned a child’s birthday but I’m sure that whatever you will do would be great! I’m thinking that if you don’t have $$$ to hire a clown maybe you could go to the dollar store and get some coloring books that way some of the kiddos can choose to color. Yeah, OK, maybe not. Sorry. I’m thinking that if you have cake, toys, ice cream the party will be a huge success to the kiddos!
