“You can be ANYTHING you want to be, you can do ANYTHING you want to do”
These are things that we heard growing up in school, from our parent. These are things that we tell our kids as words of encouragement to do whatever they want.
Newsflash, this applies to adults too.
I completed my first marathon on Sunday. It was a super intense experience that deserves it’s own post but there was one thing that stood out the most…Even if you are not the best at something you can still accomplish it.
Do something that simply isn’t natural
Multiple times before and during the marathon I looked around and wondered What on earth am I doing here? I am not a “real” runner. I don’t go running for fun–my legs don’t turn over in big strides, and I’m pretty sure my shuffle form is all kinds of wrong. I don’t wear short shorts, and I don’t run for long periods of time–I take very liberal walk breaks.
Yet I found myself at the start line of one of the biggest marathons in the world.
I run because it is incredibly challenging. I run because I surprise myself by going further and further. I run because I don’t have a runner’s body. I keep moving because even though this is one of my hardest less fun ways to exercise, I can still do it. I don’t have any dreams of being fast or elite, but what I do have dreams of is conquering something that I never ever thought was possible–like running a marathon.
I challenge you do something that feels completely unnatural to you. It could be a physical challenge or something else. I guarantee you will find a strength you never knew you had. Do something, anything that feels completely out of the box, something that you know you won’t be the best at. It will be life changing. It truly has been for me.
Grab a goal. A really big goal.
Visualize something that you have always wanted to do but have always thought you could *never* do that because of some crazy barrier that you have created for yourself. Take the big goal and break it down into bite sized pieces. You discover so much in the challenge, things that simply don’t exist inside of your comfort zone.
You can do anything you want, even if you are not the best at it. As long as you DO IT.
What have you done lately to really challenge yourself?
